If I had a $10,000 grant, I’d write a paper that would lead to the complimentary and equally common sense summary: “Unskilled Immigrants Drive Out Unskilled But Not Skilled Natives”.

Since the US is receiving enormous numbers of both types of immigration right now (in percentage terms of the native populations), though, both your headline and mine are only of academic importance.

The question we should really be interested in: What happens when you import an entire workforce?

I can shed some light on the robotics question at the end. I was involved in a FIRST Robotics team in high school, and it is a pretty decent program involving machining, building and programming your own robot. The competitions themselves had at least a dozen awards to be handed out, including team spirit, volunteerism, and safety. I can easily imagine an inner city school selling their sob story to win an award, but it was always the private or magnet public schools (I was the latter) who won the actual competitions.
