If the Chinese have any sense of humor to accompany their embrace of manifest destiny they’d choose the above as their Olympics theme song. As this article insists, it’s the way things are shaping up for the 21st century.
What would those Victorian masters of old have made of the fact that Chinese security men were on the streets of London this week, ordering our own police about and fighting running battles with British protesters while bewildered athletes carried the Olympic torch on its relay through the capital?
It was a brazen display of how confident China has become of its new place in the world, just as the British Government’s failure to take a firm stand on Chinese abuses of human rights shows how craven we have become.
The West is weak, a willfully beached whale encumbered and suffocating under its own heaving mass, tired of living, growing old, losing faith, conceding surrender to legal and illegal invasions of foreign hordes with not the slightest bit of inclination or desire to assimilate, and I lay the blame for its critical condition and spiritual stupor squarely at the feet of those guilty Western equalists who got the vapors being Number One. The folly of the Iraq War was simply coda to decades of self-evisceration and puling retreat from national pride.
As it builds gleaming skyscrapers on its fields, China alone consumes half the world’s cement and a third of its steel.
What is happening is so extraordinary that economists have had to invent a new word for it – this is not an economic cycle, but a supercycle, a shift in the world economy of historic proportions.
When demand increases and supply stands still, prices shoot up. Iron, wheat and oil are all at record prices, despite slackening demand in the faltering Western economies.
A double whammy. Demand in the West for materials decrease but prices continue to rise on increased demand in China. A weakened economy could at least eventually benefit from a drop in prices due to weakened demand, but now that is denied us. I see a big hurt coming. Stagflation all over again.
China rises on these factors:
- dem asian smarts perfectly suited for the modern visuo-spatial tech economy
- fierce jingoism
- ethnic pride (what in the West would be called racism)
- a collective spirit of predestination
- a complete absence of self-flagellating guilt
- a first instinct not based on fear or apology, but righteous entitlement
- a less tender ethical sensibility
Remind you of countries past?
Yet there is audacious hope on the horizon.
But Western attitudes will change as well, with a likely shift to the political Right. White liberal guilt, the driving force behind political correctness, will subside as Westerners feel threatened by the global order changing, and their supremacy slipping away.
Anti-Americanism will disappear as Europeans realise how much better it was to have a world super power that was a democracy (however flawed) not a dictatorship.
There is even speculation that the intense economic pressure on countries such as Britain will cause them to trim down their bloated welfare state, simply because it will no longer be affordable at present levels.
I used to think that the physical death of the last wheezing remnants of the Boomer generation would be needed to finally slay the PC Eye of Sauron, but now I see that China’s triumph is the X factor that will re-energize American culture. Chinese supremacy may very well turn out to be a blessing in disguise for an anemic West. In the tribulation of real challenge, of growing powerlessness, America has the opportunity to toss off the shackles of navel-gazing self-doubt and deconstructionist -ism wallowing and reclaim a renewed sense of self. I foresee the Chinese Century ushering in a quietly robust Underground American Century marked by its jettisoning of postmodernist nihilistic silliness.
Real loss of power has a way of focusing the mind.

Yawn. All this hoopla over China’s dizzying growth leaves me underwhelmed. China’s been growing for only a little over 30 years, and that is following centuries of precipitous decline. It probably won’t be possible to tell for many years whether this growth is the real deal or just a temporary blip in a long-term decline. And this is not to mention the fact that the growth is not by any means uniform throughout the country, with many regions remaining extremely backwards. China’s rigid population-growth restrictions are coming back to bite it, as labor shortages are forecast to become increasingly severe in the years to come – while Western countries have slow population growth too, by and large their economies are much less labor-intensive than China’s and therefore are more capable of accommodating these demographic issues.

John Derbyshire a while back wrote an article on how PC was born because the West humiliated the rest of the world over the last 600 years.
From, about, 1400 to about, say, 1960, the West dominated in almost every dimension: Politics, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, (yes, Western Art was superior), Music, Literature, Architecture, Transportation, etc.
And the West, in that period, meant White People. To be proud meant to be Racist.

Nice post. China is on the upswing, and has done a nice job of building a successful 1984 style capitalist society. They are developing a market economy with a command political structure. They have built their internet with controls in mind– Wikipedia has a nice article (with sources even!) detailing the way internet censorship is performed in China. Long story short though, it goes like this:
Capitalist Internet Company: We want access to your huge market of 100M + internet users.
China: Ok, but we get to control everything through you, meaning if we deem it a threat, we lock it down. But don’t worry, you can still sell 99% of the crap you want to.
Capitalist Internet Company: Sounds good, where do we sign?
That being said, China has its own problems, including tremendous social stratification (the poverty is unbelievable in the Western provinces). Of course, in a dictatorship, you’re better equipped to suppress that sort of thing.
The USA needs the competition to stay sharp– we need a “main enemy” we have not had since the USSR fell. Let’s just hope we rise to the challenge. If we fail, we have ourselves to blame. Democracy is nice in that the people get the government they deserve.

China does have its social and economic problems. The western regions are still poor (but coming up fast). I have been to China on business. Not just Shanghai and Beijing, but to other places like Ningbo and the like. The economic transformation is definitely real.
As for the U.S., do remember that it took the competitive pressure of the Japanese auto makers to force Detroit to start making good cars again. The same competitive pressure in all sectors by the Chinese will force the U.S. society and economy into shape. We will become the stronger of it.
Remember the expression “that which does not kill me makes me stronger”. The same can be said about the U.S. society and economy.

To be proud meant to be Racist.
No one would care if China was super proud of itself if the country’s government did not perform so much imprisonment and slaughter, or if Japan didn’t rape and kill so many throughout Asia due to beliefs about its superiority. No one would give a second look to the actions of certain nations if people weren’t bought and sold as slaves or started wars that involved ethnic cleansing.
Being prideful is not to to be confused with being oppressive, violent and murderous. Racism as a verbal or intellectual exercise is not incendiary unless lit with the flames of real actions.

Normally I would agree, but I’m sure we want China’s present state. They have a population of 1.3 billion people. Of that, 300 million are under the age of 16. At some point, China is going to be faced with feeding all these people at higher standards than the rural fare most of them are accustomed to now. Add to that, if these people ever realize what’s going on, get educated and start taking positions, imagine what a cacophony of 1.3 billion voices is going to sound like. A population of 300 million (US) is difficult enough with all the crap, infighting, and self directed conflagrations we have to contend with (can you imagine, say, 10 million Roissy’s?). China is just starting to face its bigger issues; to say nothing of the fact that many of their neighbors have serious issues, historical or otherwise, with them.

How currency works is as the dollar becomes less valuable, american exports become more attractive because they are cheaper. Deflation is actually a very bad thing. It happened to japan in the 90s. Greenspan was actually mildly worried about it.
America is considered very nationalist by most metrics. Chinese society is based on guilt and “saving face” if you will. The issues of racism is way off base too. Read about racism in Russia.
Britain is far from having a “bloated welfare state.” Also the countries that do the mythical Northern European states are considered some of the best to live in and best goverments in the world.

The West, specifically, nations that comprise the West, have their own particular identities, cultures, and identities. And their peoples’ resentment at their elites’ pursuit of ‘diversity’ is not illegitimate.
Put it this way: I figure that if one of me moved to Korea, most Koreans would be fine with that, to the extent that they noticed me there. But if me and one million of my cousins moved there, we’d generate legitimate resentment among Koreans for altering their culture and society.

To describe environmental issues as “small self-interest” is rather ignoring the fact that the UN and most nation-states are also interested in such matters.
Short-term gain then collapse vs. long-term expansion and sustainability. Most entrepreneurs in China are exercising scorch the earth policies that screw up the very infrastructure needed to propel themselves into real superpower status.
If people have to wear gas masks and wear bodysuits Chernobyl-style while walking about, if all the forests are cut turning half the country into desert and the other half into floodland, and if millions of people die from environmental disasters, how much further will their economy expand?
The smartest thing China can do right now is get hardcore about environmentalism with the same strong tyrannical iron fist they’ve been using to curb their massive population which also contributed to their pollution problems. Let’s see if greed, corruption, and already enormous existing environmental problems will accumulate faster than they can scoop out from the hole in the sinking ship.

Unfortunately, we’re following behind, since the Brussels idiots keep pressuring us to share the burden of the joy of multiculturalism and much of the population is too dumb to read the news between the lines (thus, even many who do read the news are stuck wondering about how on earth “Swedish youths” have suddenly become so hopeless).
I’m convinced that the only solution now is for us to desert the sinking white race. All the West once considered Finns Mongoloid, so surely they can consider us Mongoloid again. Why did we bother with whiteness when all it meant was getting screwed by globalist insistence that we take part in suicidal self-loathing? I say we take part in Asian world supremacy.

And most of East Asia tends to really flag behind the West in innovation — Japan is a bit of an exception, as in every other aspect (it’s an island). Overall, though, they’ll be great at laying a strong foundation but probably won’t be able to push forward.

As I said, “if these people ever realize what’s going on, get educated and start taking positions”, they will have problems.
As opposed to getting educated, knowing what’s going on and going along with it to advance your own career? All you need to create stable authoritarianism is to build an incentive structure where it pays off to lie and attack the people who refuse to go along with the ideology. If you can do that, authoritarianism will work well, since people will actually get genuinely angry at the nasty people who tell the truth and thus threaten their status racket.
It’s not like someone in the Soviet bloc thought they were being told the full truth. It went down because the system couldn’t deliver the bread and circus and because they had taken in so many non-Russian peoples who couldn’t be re-educated on how they actually joined peacefully and willingly. China doesn’t have either problem. It can stay totalitarian forever if it doesn’t screw up in some other way.

What “newly Islamized regions?” Islam’s geographical expansion ended centuries ago. In fact, as was noted recently on Gene Expression, its reach in parts of Africa actually seems to be shrinking in the face of Christian expansion. Islam generally has very little appeal to persons not born Muslim, with most of its converts in the West coming from the lumpenproletariat. Most of the Jews living in predominately Muslim countries either have left already or are unlikely to leave except in extreme circumstances.
You could learn some border control from us [Finland], seeing that we have a 1000-mile long border with a hopelessly poor country
The Finland/Russia per capita income gap is proportionately very similar to the U.S./Mexico gap.
You’d of course know more about this, but I’ve read that the reason why Finland isn’t swamped with illegal Russian immigrants is because (1) much of the border is very remote, with no road crossings or nearby towns and a hostile climate for several months of the year; and (2) it is very difficult to get jobs, housing, government services etc. in Finland without proof of legal residency.

Gannon, Germany was first an ally of Russia and acted against Finland although did not declare war during the war in 1939-1940. The Russian conquest failed but produced a problem with about 15 % of Finns being suddenly homeless and stripped of all their belongings and eager to strike back. So, Finland sought friendly relations with Germany, believing that Germany would invade Russia. Technically, Finland was never an ally of Germany and the Russians attacked Finland even the second time as they dropped the first bombs, but morally it’s clear that the second time Finland invaded Russia. Finland then sued for peace before Germany did and fought the third war coinciding with WWII to expel Germans from Finland.
Any competence against the Russians is a matter of pride for Finns, of course. Whether there were Nazis, vampires or demonic beasts on the same side doesn’t matter.
The Nazis never had a clear racial policy on Finns, but it is clear that Finns were not considered Aryans. Intermarriages between Finns and Germans had to be approved by Hitler himself (although a photograph was enough, it did require a racial examination). Heinrich Himmler, sort of the leader of Nazi racial mythologists, did not consider Finns to be Asian and stated that Finns and Aryans have common ancestors, but most of the German academics he gathered considered Finns to be Mongoloid. Ideological Nazi recruitement in Finland was limited to the Swedish minority (who often had Nazi sympathies, since at the time Finland had troubled ethnic relations and many Swedes wanted the Germanic racialists to come save them).
In any case, no true Finnish nationalist would consider himself Aryan. The word Aryan actually exists as an ancient loanword in Finnish. It means “slave”.

The press keeps silent about who’s behind the rising anti-Semitic violence in the hope that people would imagine blonde neo-Nazis, but only the most clueless are buying that.
It’s obvious even in Finland with a very small minority. I used to live next to the Israeli embassy and there’s a lot of trouble. Also, a lot of Europeans are joining the political anti-Semitism, but… I’ve seen plenty of pale faces screaming violent slogans and those are not far *right* activists.
As for your reasons, (1) is probably partially true, especially if you note that there’s a local Russian migration magnet in St. Petersburg and (2) is also true – but that’s something you get with enforcement. Note that there are many Finnish-speakers and speakers of closely related languages in Russia who would have an even easier time blending in Finland than Mexicans in the US. In fact, during Soviet times, when Finns would’ve welcomed border jumpers, the Soviet Union put a lot of pressure on Finland to find and return defectors. Enforcement can be done even when no one except the far left actually wants to do it. Strangely, for the Americans it’s impossible when everyone except the far left wants it…
The territory is not hard during the warm months. If I wanted to jump a border, I’d much rather do it here where it’s just a line in the comfortable forest.

When I see people wearing shirts that say, “Italians do it better” or “Irish girls are hotter” that is so not a big deal. Likewise, when I hear white Americans talk about the European countries of their ancestors it does not anger me at all. When Saint Patrick’s Day comes around, you may notice that many black people wear green. I think it is a good thing when people celebrate their heritage. A Chinese-American celebrating Chinese New Year is not offensive in my book. I can honestly say I have never heard any black person in passing complain when another group wants to celebrate their ethnicity and or cultural holidays etc.
It becomes ugly when people say (with menace) that we are superior to all other groups, we are Gods chosen people, you are inferior because you come from this ethnic group etc.
I have noticed that many people are hostile to African-Americans who attempt to identify with Africa. Most African-Americans cannot point to an African country and say this is where my ancestors come from in the same way that your average white American can point to European country on a map and say my ancestors came from this country or these countries. We were forced to give up most of our cultural practices during the “seasoning” process. This is part of the reason why some African-Americans are very resistant to having English names for the sake of blending in. At most, black Americans can claim West Africa since most slaves brought to the Americas were taken from West Africa (west 87%, central 11%, and east 2%). Others black Americans choose a country based on comparing their features/looks to those with the Africans they see in America.

mr. mike, no. The American white birth rate is just average for a European population and American whites will shrink as a population without immigration. The African-American birth rate is somewhat higher, but it’s still dwarfed by rates in some new minorities. That is, immigrants are the real reason for America’s higher birth rate.
Also a large part of the scare is an inability to grasp statistics and the fact that the so-called total fertility rates will show a deep drop whenever people are postponing having children even if they’ll eventually have just as many or more children.

Sorry, I should’ve said that much of the alarmism is caused by the inability to grasp anything.
A woman who has her first child at 15 will have not have any more children than a woman who has her first child at 25 unless she actually makes more. The point is that a lot of people have decided from the start that they want, say, three children and then they can safely postpone that from teens to twenties and to some extent to thirties. There isn’t enough fertility decline in that time to matter for birth rates. The TFR is an estimate of future child births based on the assumption that women who didn’t have children by a certain age are not planning to have any more children than women who had no children by that age in the previous generation. If those who never wanted more than three children are postponing, which they can fairly safely do, it will underpredict fertility.
And that’s what’s obviously happening, if you look at eg. completed fertility rates (which are not estimates but actual child counts) and the gap to TFRs.

jaakkeli,
If the children of the 25 or 35 year old who has 3 children also delay child-bearing until they are 25-35 and the children of the 15 year old have children then the impact on the population make up is significant even if they have the same number of children in their lifetimes.
A: 35 years – 3 children
B: 20 years – 3 children
B: 40 years – 3 children, 9 grandchildren
B: 60 years – 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren
A: 70 years – 3 children, 9 grandchildren
By 85 years, the B’s have had another generation and the A grandchildren are 10 years away from having their 3 kids.
Total population
A’s family: 12
B’s family: 39
That’s assuming that As and Bs have the same number of children just timed differently.

Couldn’t find much to disagree with here (about China, not America), and not from lack of trying. Growth is undeniable, and capitalist China is embracing the new landscape with a dog-eat-dog gusto not seen in the US since westward expansion. Manifest destiny, indeed. Racial, cultural pride is nothing new. The Chinese always have thought of themselves as the greatest nation on earth, and now it’s time for payback. “Rightful entitlement” and “absence of self-flagellating guilt,” as you say, are defining characteristics of the new China.
By the way, although ethnic pride and racism aren’t the same thing, China does have plenty of both. Also fuck you for buying into the racial IQ crap.

two things.
(1) in my halcyon days in Southern elementary schools, the most common show-and-tell topic among black kids was their long-ago ancestors’ harrowing experience on the middle passage. therefore, a deep awareness was etched into their minds even at that age, and those are the kinds of things that don’t fade.
(2) your statement may be true, but not for the reason you think. here’s why it’s true: none of the countries to which they COULD point existed when their ancestors were forced to leave.
with the exception of liberia (1847), every single country on the face of the african continent became independent after 1951. nineteen fifty-one.
so, where would they point?

Don’t try to be a smartass if you dont know what you’re talking about. That’s *exactly* what’s happening: teenage pregnancies have been declining in most of the West. Since those women are likely to have kids anyway, just a little later, that means a slump in total fertility rates. In other words, the apparent TFR drop has been partly driven by postponement of childbirth from teens to twenties. (In fact, one reason America has a lesser apparent slump in TFR is that it’s teen pregnancy rate has declined less. The same for Britain vs. continental Europe.)
usually when some one mentions a woman postponing children, I tend to operate under the assumtion that it means graduating college and having established oneself.
That shit is irrelevant. No, I meant simply deciding to have that baby next day or next month or whatever, any increase in age of mothers. That’s what people who discuss fertility mean by postponing. I sort of erraneously assumed that if someone doesn’t go “huh???” at the term “total fertility rate” they can be assumed to know what postponing means in fertility discussions…

Johhny, the middle passage is just that. I am talking about before the inslavement period. Some African-Americans find it embarssing and annoying that our history is sometimes recorded beging during the start of slavery. I am willing to bet you never heard any of your black classmates talk about which tribe/ ethnic group their ancestors came from.
Now as far as pointing out areas on the map, if an AA knew what tribe their(some) ancestors were from, he or she could point to a map and locate the tribes current location.
for example: If I found out my ancestors were Xhousa then I would most Xhousa living in Southern and South Africa. If my ancestors were Wolof, then I can look at present day Sengal as their home. If my ancestors are Yourba then I would look to present day Nigeria and Benin. If my ancesotrs were Fulani, then they lived in various areas of West Africa.

I’ve noticed that no one here has pointed out the essential difference between Japan in the ’80’s and China today.
Japan’s economy in the 1980’s was driven by large corporations that were backed by cheap money (after all, it WAS a bubble). In contrast, China’s growth is driven mostly by entrepreneurial start-ups and small to medium sized companies. Any of you who have been to China to do business there can attest to this. This suggests that China’s growth is more real and sustainable and will continue for quite some time. Of course, there will be dips and bends along the way. But, their long-term prospects are generally up.
This is why I think China is much more real than Japan was in the 1980’s.

Yeah. China is big.
Nothing really surprising happened to Japan: it settled down into an ordinary wealthy country. With 1/3 of US population and about 1/10 of total European-derived population, the idea that they could’ve been a serious rival for #1 position was ridiculous from the beginning. But with today’s Japanese per capita GDP, China would be way, way ahead of US and even ahead of the EU + US total.

My point is that entrepreneurs and small companies, not giant bureaucracies create wealth and economic growth. Japan’s development was “top-down”. China’s is “bottom-up”. Decentralized bottom up system are always more capable and offer more long-term growth than centralized top-down ones.
It is for this reason why I think China has very good long term growth prospects.

So, Japan had a 1980s bubble? So what? Everyone did. Finland, for example, had a massive one that popped to produce a deeper depression than the 1930s one (the 1990s one is called “Great Depression” here). In fact, it was very similar to Japan’s, the main difference is handling the pop: we opted to have a deep crisis while Japan got a long crisis.
Japan maybe had an exceptional bubble, but its popping still left behind a wealthy country. That’s the point: the only people who were wrong about Japan were those who believed that Japan could develop an economy that’s far better in per capita terms than anyone else’s. China doesn’t need that. It doesn’t even need to reach solid first world status before it’s total GDP exceeds the US. It can pull a Japan and it’ll still rule the world.
We seem to agree, but for different reasons…

Hey there scottynx and johnny five. I believe race is so intertwined with culture and economics that it’s impossible to determine if it is actually the factor behind IQ gaps in tests. Psychological elements also get overlooked, such as reduced confidence from social status (and even, gasp, racism. Nope, it’s not gone). And this is a scientific issue, no reason to call me a liberal for going with one side or the other.
Also, I actually responded to the China analysis. The “fuck you” comment was meant to be an obviously tongue-in-cheek expression of exasperation, to provide rationale for not starting an endless “rational debate” on the issue.

This thread got by me the first time around, but I’m pleased to see someone revived the thread.
Having said that however, I too am a bit perplexed by Roissy’s point and intention by his post, as I see a number of themes here that kind of are disconnected from each other, really. I don’t see how China’s supposed ascendancy has anything to do w/any decline of the West (which I also think is a bit overwrought; if anything the West is likely to continue in terms of its influence and world-leading cache’).
The major changes that Roissy speaks to are more reflective of an ongoing status and class war btw and among White folks, which, for some reason, many of those who agree w/Roissy don’t seem able to substantially address.
The lack of TFR among the “right”, small “r”, White folks ain’t the fault of “others”, ie immigrants, legal or illegal, though I do agree w/stronger limits on both, particular the latter; the real issue is the simple fact that White Men enmasse don’t seem all that able to convince White Women to have babies, as say, Russia clearly shows. And scapegoating won’t help either.
As for Chic Noir’s points wrt African American heritage, she nailed some very good points down, and Johnny Five’s reply was good too, though a bit incomplete. While he’s right to note that African had no nation state as we would recognize them today, and that Africa came out from under colonization in the 50s (Ghana was first in 1957 I believe), what J5 leaves out is that such nation state borders were in place for much longer under European colonialism, going well back into the 19th century, if not longer. SAFR is a good example.
Again, Chic makes a very good point-there IS a kind of special kind of hatin’ on display when Black folks wish to display pride in their ancestral origins among a significant number of Whites, that doesn’t seem to be the case when other groups do the same thing, with the possible exception of Mexican folk. Fascinating commentary on the state of the White Psyche.
