Too many morons will read that and think, “Let my inner asshole come out, and only those who are really awesome will be able to love me”.
It is more accurate to say that you can not be truly loved if you are not truly known. And, for someone to know you, you need to be open and honest about the important things.
That last act can get you hated.

I don’t really agree. Likely, modern life makes the dominant emotion about people … indifference. While you should be yourself, and not project a phony mask (not the least of which, is the effort required to do so is painful and exhausting for most people), doing so will probably not make you either loved or hated.
Most people will neither hate nor love you. They just won’t even know you exist or care much one way or the other.

What if you have the balls to be hated but you gain more by lying and getting someone to love the role that you play?
I definitely have people who have seen the real me and hate me, but I only show them that because they don’t create value for me either way. Some people love who I really am, but there are others who love (or like very much) the role I play for them. I pretend to care about shit that I’m indifferent about and sometimes even opposed to. This makes people think I’m trustworthy and they lower their guard enough for me to extract some real value from them. There are people who will go to their grave believing I was a nice guy.
I have an atheist friend who will tell girls “God never puts more on our plate than we can handle” when he’s gaming them and they eat that shit up. He might lose the lay if he told her that religion was bullshit. He has the balls to be hated, but he’d rather drain those balls on her face.
