We all know how conformist douchebags can be. I saw a phalanx of them yesterday marching for the nearest bar in identical powder blue oxford shirts, khaki shorts, and ken cole sandals. OK, maybe one guy’s blue shirt was a darker blue than the other guy’s.
Girls think that their fashion acumen sets them apart from looking too conformist. Their attention to minor clothing details and perfect makeup application is their way to stand apart from all the other girls.
They should think again.

Neither does it mine. I dress rather conservatively for my age (mostly khakis and decent sweater, occasionally tshirt, I have not worn Jeans more than 10 times in the past half decade) but in general, it seems to help: I have never had any issues with customs/airport security monkeys/police in the past 5 years… I always – unless dressed in a suit – wear sneakers though.
Oh and I spend what some consider ungodly amounts of money on clothing. For one thing, my GF gets by with far less money spent on clothing.

Wow, the commenters on this blog have terrible taste. Avoid that trio like the plague. Not only does their sameness say something about how exciting they’ll be (in bed, conversation, or otherwise), but any group of three or more identical girls has future annoying head games written all over it.
The conformity in this town has got to be the most annoying thing about DC by far. Fortunately, it also makes the threshold of gaining girls’ attention much lower to surmount. Seriously, learn to dress yourself in a way that’s just a little more unique than the rest of the crowd you’re running with, but not off the deep end. When you go to a bar or a club, be that guy who’s dressed entirely appropriately and yet just a little different (and a little more put together) than most. Do something with your damn hair. Don’t look like you’re trying too hard. And please, avoid the blue shirt and khakis at all costs.
The girls will be everywhere. You will be amazed. And if a girl doesn’t go for it, you can know right off the bat that she was never worth your time or effort anyway.

Tanning gives lots of UV on the skin, producing Vitamin D in massive amounts, that produces lots of “feel-good” hormones, particularly on fair-skinned women. Among other things, it fights depression like mad. It is indeed one of the most effective treatments (light therapy) for depression.
So, that’s pretty straightforward. The girls tan because it FEELS better. A LOT better.
There is a study out that predicts lower MS rates for women who have more sunlight and therefore Vitamin D (very hard to get enough in diet alone):

I agree that a tan is found to be almost universally attractive. However, old age spots and deep wrinkles – the observable products of excessive UV exposure – practically shout to the opposite sex the unobservable consequence: “I’ve accumulated a lot of DNA damage in my day.”
I buy into the theory that the attributes we find attractive in the opposite sex are usually signs of reproductive fitness and good health. I’m also a fan of Ockham’s razor, the vitamin D thing is a bit of stretch…but it is food for thought. And I certainly don’t agree with you that just because something feels good, it’s good for you. Swallowing Big Mac’s whole and drinking cheap liquor feels good to me!
If I was going to toss my hat into the ring on the Autism debate, Simon Baron-Cohen’s theory of systemizers creating autistic children makes the most sense to me.

It is theorized that white skin is an adaption to low northern light levels more than anything else.

Tanning ages you prematurely — obviously bad for girls, but also bad for guys who don’t want to give away their age so easily when around the PYTs.

Sometime soon, it will be associated with lower-middle class girls who live in tanning salons (which are easily affordable now), and it will no long be the cool elite thing to do. Soem people have been holding that view for a while now in Europe. Especially for dark tans, some tan is different (and usually not all that obvious).

There are two different types of Vitamin D, Ergocalciferol, the plant kind, and cholecalciferol, the animal kind. Cholecalciferol is the kind your body produces.
Also, sunlight is used to trigger a number of other Vitamin producers, and also can boost your metabolism. So it may not be just, or even at all, Vitamin D. However, the point that it makes people “feel better” is the key point here.
I am against taking massive quantities of Vitamins your body can EASILY make for itself. If your body has elected to not make these vitamins, like Vitamin D, shoving a bunch down your throat is not a sound idea. REALLY.
It’s like trying to lower cholesterol by eating less cholesterol. The majority of your bodies cholesterol is produced by the body. So the better things is to ask WHY your body has gone all insane and begun over-producing cholesterol. If it wanted the levels lower, it could do it by just producing less.
