“Perhaps 74 will chime in on whether Sea Fighter can take on the patrol boat role.
It is significantly larger, with a 2-3′ deeper draft, so there may be certain areas it just can’t go.
It does lack hangar and maintenance facilities, but in theory it could move Fire Scouts on its lift (with some minor redesign). It also has fresh-water, washdown facilities. This combination would let it lilly-pad helos from other vessels. (not perfect, but also not bad for a ~1000 ton vessel)
The lift could be enlarged, or a flight-deck hangar could be added, at a cost of course.
To me, Sea Fighter looks like a fast, naval HMMWV. It’s not very big, can’t carry very much, and isn’t specialized for any particular role.
However, it provides “enough” capability to be valuable across a wide range of missions, and has the potential to be bought in HMMWV-like numbers (assuming gold-plating can be kept to a minimum).”

Wish fat loss drugs were the answer. They work either by:
1) controlling hunger (worthless, since most Americans don’t even know what hunger feels like in the first place), or
2) increasing fat metabolism (worthless, since most Americans will “out-eat” the effects of the drug).
Obesity is a cognitive problem, i.e. “it’s OK to be fat”. I don’t know of any drug on the horizon to fix that one.

Well, having lost a bunch of weight in six months and kept it off for five years (about 40 pounds total-205 to 165, including the lost of about 45 pounds of fat while gaining about 5 pounds of muscle mass), and kept it off, and have a six pack at 62, apparently the holy grail of men’s health, here is my experience:
1. Don’t eat according to a schedule. Eat when you are hungry. That is right. Forget the three meals per day stuff. That’s only for farmers. Or, as the Indians out West used to say: “White man him plenty stupid. He check his watch to see if he’s hungry.”
2. Don’t eat to fight boredom. Do something interesting or useful. eg. clean the house, go out to a bar, etc.
3. Go to bed early to avoid late night snacks. Get up early and get active.
4. Don’t use butter. You will be surprised food will taste OK with out it after a while. Seasoned salt really makes things taste good.
5. Snack on veggies. Apples are good.
6. Avoid fatty foods. DO NOT EAT FRENCH FRIES.
7. Reduce caloric intake and increase muscle mass to lose weight. Don’t waste your time at the gym walking on a treadmill.
8. Workout with weights every two days for about 10 minutes. That’s all it takes to keep toned, buffed, and flexible. It is so easy, yet when I tell people this they just don’t believe it.
9. Don’t weigh yourself when losing weight. Just eat as little as possible, and measure results by how your clothes fit. A scale is too variable and a very cruel way to monitor your progress.
10. Watch your nutrition. Take vitamins or eat some red meat from time to time. Brush with care, since meat diets to lose weight might damage your teeth.
This system works. The gay men have started hitting on me again. But, I did say I was a beta.

American women did not fare as well, with an average waist size of 36.5 inches, about two inches above their threshold of 34.6 inches.”

Primarily meat diets are actually terribad.
Some vegetables including rice and beans have protein, nuts have good protein, and eating a lot of fruits and vegetables (unrefined carbs) is much healthier. The Asian home-cooked diet of white rice with stirfried vegetables is fine, as long as the portions are small. Snacking on fresh and dried fruits, especially berries, is also delicious and provides a ton of fiber.
High fat (especially saturated fat in meat) low carb in itself does not do much wonders for the body. Cook the stirfry in olive oil (unsaturated fats) and get omega-3 oils for fat, not fat from meat. Vegetarians live longer, period. We haven’t gone completely vegetarian, but my husband has two close friends who have, and they are in better shape than he is.
As far exercise goes, I walk 2 miles every Monday to Friday to and from work, and I do lifts, squats, lunges, sit-ups, and push-ups (not girl style) every day for about half an hour. A year of this has turned me from flabby pouchy tummy to seeing muscle definition in a lot of places. I can also walk/jog for much longer, whereas previously I was very much out of shape.
It does not take a lot of exercise to see good results, but it does take sustained, routine exercise. No shortcuts, no instant results, but over the long term it makes you more energetic, less stressed, stronger, and just better. The mind seems clearer and sharper as well. And for women, don’t stop exercising when on your period, just do it more lightly. Being healthier makes the period and the surrounding effects less agonizing, too.

UsuallyLurking says to get real, that meat diets aren’t bad for your teeth.
After my 6 months of weight lost, I went to the dentist. My regular dental tech, who has seen me for years, took one look in my mouth and exclaimed:
What did you do to your teeth?
When I explained, she said: “Yes, we often see dental problems in people on the Atkins diet.”
So, my dental tech certainly thinks diets can harm teeth. I was a typical example.
Part of my reason for dieting was to avoid type II diabetes, which runs in my family. Usually seen with obesity, type II diabetes is common in Indians (East Asians) who are not obese. If you read about insulin resistance, it seems to be due to lack of muscle response to insulin, which normally causes muscle to take up glucose to make gylcogen to store in the muscle. This requires your muscle cells to produce and stick glucose receptors on your muscle cell membranes. The production of glucose receptors appears to be blunted in type II diabetes.
Indian men strike me as being very “soft”, without much muscle mass or a desire to stay toned and buffed. That is, they don’t seem to value being in shape. In my simple reasoning, I decided that the best way to keep the muscle responding to insulin is to:
1. Stay buffed and toned. Bulk up. Keep the muscles working.
2. Really cut back on your caloric intake one or two days per week. Make your muscles break down its glycogen stores (takes a day or two of fasting) so the next time you really eat, and the insulin goes up, your muscles will respond by soaking up the glucose.
This has worked like a charm so far. My glucose is low, my good fats are high and my bad fats are low.
Now, if I could just get some women! I am reading this blog for hints.

So, my dental tech certainly thinks diets can harm teeth. I was a typical example.
People nowadays eat all sorts shitty foods: Grain-Fed Beef, Boiled Milk, Pesticide cover Fruit and Veg, etc.
And the grand majority of Americans have some sort of major vitamin deficiency like, say, Vitamin D. On top of that, they then go on some crash diet which usually reduces the number of Vitamins, Minerals and Enzymes that they might have gotten otherwise on their previously deficient diet.
Then, their teeth hurt.
Eskimos, Inuit, Native Americans (back in the day, at least), the Masai…the list goes on and on. Lots of meat, few vegetables (in the case of the Eskimos, NONE) and great teeth.
Meat does not ruin your teeth, shitty diets do.

Michael, one of the reasons for this is that the way we prepare our grains nowadays is radically different than how we did it in the past, but, yes, right on.
White Bread and Low-Fat, High-Sugar Cereals (and fruit juices) are killing us.

I’ve read about it, and I don’t eat things that come out of a sealed plastic bag unless it’s dried fruit or nuts. It is true that the carbohydrates commonly ingested like donuts, snack bars and cereal are refined and processed. Vegetables do not fall under this category (but salad dressing is loaded with nastiness).
Although there are problems with pesticides and other chemicals, the hormones in animal products are much more direct in their effects, because we share more in common with mammals like pigs and cows than plants and insects. I’ve been cutting out all red meat from my diet. White meat like chicken breast and fish are good, though.
White Bread and Low-Fat, High-Sugar Cereals (and fruit juices) are killing us.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are not refined carbs, but mostly contain water, vitamins and fiber along with trace antioxidants. Fiber is very filling, as is water. Often what the body signals as hunger is actually thirst. Fiber has other benefits in terms of the digestive tract as well.
The advice to eat lots of fat and protein is not great by itself. Eating huge, protein-filled meals without any vegetables often can cause indigestion and constipation. The increased appetite that comes with exercise can be moderated by simply eating good snacks like dried fruits or yogurt.
Lots of meat, few vegetables (in the case of the Eskimos, NONE) and great teeth.
I don’t avoid fat for the sake of avoiding fat. For example, olive oil and cashews both have great properties but are very fatty — the unsaturated kind. As far as the Eskimos go, they look rather plump (looking skinny does not necessarily mean healthy), but their diet high in omega-3 fatty acids protects them:
“Eskimos (more properly referred to as the Inuit) eat large quantities of fish rich in oils. Eskimos often appear to be relatively fat, yet suffer low levels of cardiovascular disease. This unexpected combination of a fatty diet and low heart disease is thought to be due to the special nature of the fish oils consumed. The blood of Eskimos takes significantly longer to clot than the blood of those on a Western diet. This longer clotting time is believed to reduce the risk of heart disease. The particular fatty acids thought to be responsible for this beneficial effect include omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid) and other polyunsaturated fatty acids.”

Hope — Red meat that’s not grain-fed and antibiotic-saturated can be found with a little effort. Salad dressing can be made by hand in under two minutes — try 4 tablespoons of olive oil, 1.5 of balsamic vinegar, a heaping teaspoonful of mustard, and some salt and pepper. It’s delish. You’re certainly right about the benefits of a decent amount of fiber. People going on Atkins often find themselves doing a lot of what used to be called “straining at their stool.” So they up their fiber intake. But you might want to watch the fruit and especially the dried fruit — that’s a whole lot of sugar. Fruit is being raised to be much, much sweeter these days than it once was, and many people find that cutting back some on the fruit helps them shed some pounds, or at least not put on so much weight.

Yes, I’ve read about the French suburbs, but I did not visit them. In Manhattan, the women are very thin since you can find plenty of big gut men. In Paris, big bellied men are few and far between. Also many of the Manhattan women dedicate a lot of time to being thin. You and I know a lot of NYC women are on starvation diets, but that jacks up the face which would lead us to another story but. . .
Beyond walking, most French don’t exercise in the way that Americans do. I saw one health club, I am sure there were more, and I saw very few people out running or jogging.
Usually Lurking, one of the biggest differences that I noticed between Paris and the states are serving sizes. The cans of soda are smaller; I brought an empty can back to compare. Even McDonalds serving sizes were much smaller. The plates were smaller. A French croissant is 1/2-1/3 the size of an American one. The bakeries that I visited were not big on preservatives because all of the croissants that I brought after 3pm were hard as rocks. I came across no giant chocolate chip cookies either. In the supermarkets I visited, I did not see isles devoted to potato chips, corn chips, and doritos
There are so many issues around obesity. I really think it should have its own twelve step program.

I do believe that in the next 40 years, fat loss drugs and technologies will bring us closer to being able to eat like pigs and look like gods, but we won’t be there yet. There is no quick fix now, but it’s foolish to believe there will never be one. There was no quick fix for polio 100 years ago.
Have you not noticed that even though people don’t die from bacterial pneumonia due to antibiotics, that they are dying more from cancer and alzheimers? Have you been living under a rock? Or just watching a lot of drug ads on television? There is a reason why science finds a cure for one disease and eight more take it’s place. They are looking for a cure and ignoring the cause because “cures” are a lot more expensive and removing the cause means people may actually have to do something other than take a pill. It might be slightly uncomfortable or time consuming and take away from their TV time.
It’s that immature and depressing desire that has so many thousands dying every year from drug side effects. Jesus, there are products and methods that are 100% safe but the motivation to NOT deal with the cause is killing people left and right. So, you probably like the idea of being able to have hundreds of cancer causing chemicals in your body and still think that you can be healthy? Doctors are human beings, not Jesus Christ. LOL

Hunger for raw calories, or hunger for some nutrient? Or is it the ‘belief’ of the poster that the human body, over thousands of years of evolution(or because of intelligent design) never refined “hunger” beyond simple thirst for water, and simple hunger for raw calories?
Yet people feel ‘hunger’ for caffeine and nicotine, and it is satisfied without raw calories and can happen when they are ‘full’. Why should chemical specific ‘hunger’ be limited to caffeine and nicotine? The benefit of having the body be able to say “I want protein” or “I want that plant over there that has a vitamin I need” is obvious.
Then peoples food were laced with chemicals to trick them into thinking they were getting that nutrient, and yet the food didn’t actually have that nutrient. So they were still hungry. And no matter how much of the “right taste” they ate, they were still hungry.

Well its known that women store their excess fat in their hips while males have central obesity. (Pear vs. Apple shapes) thus that statistic does not completely reflect actual differences in health or weight between the sexes.
Abdominal fat is much worse for one’s health than fat around the hips. This is part of the reason why men die so much younger than women.

Didn’t you notice that the guy you pushed out of the way of a speeding bus died like 75 years later of cancer? Ever think of why? Maybe being pushed out of the path of oncoming vehicles causes cancer? Ever think of that? Bet you didn’t!

Ah yes, skepticism about the endeavor that, for example, wiped out smallpox but total credulity for a pad you can stick to your foot that sucks the mercury out of your body.

Perhaps you could start a fund for research into that.

You mistake my meaning. There was no skepticism about the vaccine that supposedly wiped out small pox, but there was speculation that it was on it’s way out naturally by the time the vaccine was created. Vaccinations contain thimerisol, a mercury compound and mercury is a known potent neurotoxin. It’s number three on a list of about 90 of the most hazardous substances known to man. If you still believe it’s not doing any harm in your body, then go ahead and keep it there.

Western medical science didn’t discover the smallpox cure.
If anything, it took credit for some other’s work. A celtic wisewomen knew this, and was questioned by a certain doctor, he was informed by her that chickenpox prevented smallpox and had been known to do so for many generations in her clan.
Please choose a better example next time. Perhaps a not so flashy & dramatic *stolen* one.
You fail at demonstrating.

the strength of western science – which is, UNIQUELY among naturalistic viewpoints worldwide, marked by objective testing and experimental control** – lies not in discovering correlations, but, rather, in discriminating between true causal links and spurious (or nonexistent) correlations.
or:
western science is THE bullshit detector.
random case in point:
in 1536, jacques cartier, desperate to save his men from scurvy, consulted local native medicine men, who pointed him to the life-saving power of arbor vitae. the success of this treatment was later seized upon by good old western medicine, in the isolation of vitamin c as the causal agent in preventing scurvy.
is this an example of western science exploitatively “stealing” ideas from the poor little natives of the st. lawrence, or is it an example of successful discernment of one extremely valuable piece of knowledge amidst a sea of shamanic bullshit?
you decide.
there can be no doubt that your dear celtic wisewoman proffered hundreds of completely ineffectual folk cures every bit as sincerely and assuredly as she did this admittedly valid one.
or:
if you’re happy (that they don’t drill holes in heads to let out evil spirits anymore) and you know it, clap your hands (for western medicine).

What the hell are you trying to say? People are dying from different diseases than they used to for several reasons.
1. The old diseases are cured
Even if the mortality rate from disease B remains constant, humans and their constant need to find a boogeyman will say there is an epidemic of B once the far worse disease A is cured.
2. Our diets fellate Mexican dicks
Do I need to explain this?
3. We were never meant to live this long in the first place.
There wasn’t much selection for longevity back when people were having all their kids by their mid 20s. Diseases that kill us in our 40s and 50s didn’t prevent us from reproducing and so were not selected out of the population. Shit, most people didn’t even live long enough for those diseases to kill them.
All of this doesn’t mean that science won’t help us live longer healthier lives while still eating crap. Have you not been paying attention to the last 200 years of scientific progress. What we eat today gives us cancer and heart disease, but we still outlive our ancestors of the 18th century. Stuffed to the gills is better than malnourished. Even if our diet doesn’t change, scientists will find ways to mitigate the ill effects of donuts and fried ice cream, and new diseases will inevitably pop up. 100 years from now when people are dying at the relatively young age of 150 from disease X, people like you will blaim it on their over-active lifestyle and organic diet, and you will cry to the heavens that science doesn’t have the answer.

you could fuck fatties of varying degrees, create standing waves in their flesh, and study the resulting resonance. +100 points if you could get their whole bodies to shatter à la wine glasses.
it’d be research (of course), charity (if they survived), and natural selection (if they shattered) all at once.
trifecta!

Well, this was certainly grabbed out of thin air. Whoops I forget that reproduction is the only purpose of our lives.

Fabulous. We can die slower and suffer longer. Real progress would be living longer and loving it and having the energy and attitude to enjoy it. It’s so easy to do, but not easy enough apparently. Have you seen Tim Burton’s Batman? The newscaster segment? More and more people are looking like that.
All of this doesn’t mean that science won’t help us live longer healthier lives while still eating crap.
What you’re asking for is for “science” to redesign our bodies to make it compatible with this list of goodies:

You’re like the retarded child who proclaims himself winner because the adult no longer wants to explain the same simple concept to him. You’re a lost cause. Have you ever met someone so stupid or stubborn that it was clear you could never communicate with that person beyond a certain level?
@79
Aristotle, as wise as he was, did not have the benefit of modern science. Though his age for physical prime isn’t much older than what I think of as our prime, and a late bloomer could certainly reach his prime around 32. His age for mental prime could be about right if he was thinking about wisdom rather than raw intelligence. Fields that are heavier on knowledge than intelligence tend to have older primes.

And the modern data sets are for modern men eating modern diets. So what exactly are you proving here?
In any case, I think I’ve pretty much destroyed Myth 1, “people didn’t live long in the bad old days”.
Of course, any time when “decent folk” have choosen to take things to the Malthusian limit are going to be bad regardless of technological level. In fact, the technological decay will probably make things worse.

A quote from Aristotle about the mind reaching its peak at 50 does not disprove the mountains of evidence proving people did not live as long in the “bad old days”. Long is subjective, but not at as long as today is a fact.
