Neither of these women are even reomtely attractive. I’ll give Elizabeth a break, because she’s old and ill, but Rillie Hunter is just plain odd looking — her chin could cut glass, for example. Plus, both of these women are over 40.

Do you really admire John Edwards’ alpha-ness? Do you seriously believe that he still excites his wife’s loins? Do you think that she’s really lying out of her complete adoration and love for her “alpha” husband, and not some other motive altogether?
My husband and I had discussed the Edwards/McCain affairs. We both already knew Edwards was a seedy, greasy, car-salesman-like politician before this all went public. But we’re not going to moralize about their actions. There is no point. Absolute faithfulness within “monogamy” has never really been part of the human behavioral landscape.
The id is controlled by the prefrontal cortex. Those who do not have good development of their frontal lobes are de facto children. Feel free to glorify the id monster, but consider the possibility that it is the same source of selfishness that leads many women to divorce their “beta husbands” and take them to the cleaners.

I agree with your assessment of Alpha males – I think that as an alpha male, you can get away with things that are completely against the rules, yet people love you for it.
Men like Hemmingway, Buckowski, Errol Flynn, even Pete Doherty have shown that you can truly give the middle finger to society and have people love you for it.

Males can get away with what other males allow them to get away with. It’s up to men to keep men in line. I’ve known greasy little jerks with no money or status who can play a bunch of girls at once (are they “alphas”?). They can keep this up until they cross the wrong guy.

While removing no fault may chase some women away from dubious marriages, it doesn’t solve the fact that the female will age, have children, and all sexual interest and appeal will decline and turn into dried ashes. Possible reasons why Elizabeth Edwards might lie for her husband (besides his “alpha-ness”, which I think is questionable):
1. She’s sick and can’t deal with the hassle: the press, the public questions, etc.
2. If she lets people find out, she not only risks divorce, she has to take public humiliation, rather than private humiliation if she covers for him successfully.
3. She’s invested much of her life in her husband’s political career and wants him to win an election almost as badly as he does.

One more point regarding alphas, related to my #3 point: you forget that in the cases you’re talking about, there’s both lots of money and public attention at stake that may keep the women at least semi-loyal to their men. Women married to famous alpha males usually love the limelight, and know that they risk losing it altogether if they leave. Even a big divorce settlement doesn’t always make up for that.
Would an alpha who was neither rich nor famous be able to hold on to his wife after humiliating her with an affair? In some cases, yes. In others, no.
Rumour has it that Jacqueline Kennedy came close to divorcing her alpha husband but was bribed into staying by her father-in-law; money clearly influenced her but her husband’s alpha magnetism doesn’t seem to have been a factor.

I think Roissy could write a great book plotted on several intertwining modern relationships from a social research angle with Tom Wolfian thought narration for each character, revealing their TRUE UGLY motivations with his writing abilities.
That rant really was a thing of beauty and unfortunately is very true. I wish the world were made up of more nice people than it is, but it isn’t. She probably has zero sexual drive. That’s likely been going on for quite a while but certainly for the last couple of years. Not only was and is she undergoing chronic treatment for uncurable cancer that’s killing her at some rate of speed, and taking anti-estrogen drugs as part of that regimine, she’s also one year shy of 60 and hence way past menopause. Edwards in contrast is 4 years younger and very very fit and youthful for his age – more like a fit mid 40 yo. An almost certain enormous gulp in sexual desire at this point, in other words.
Edwards also didn’t seem to in any way have emotionally abandon her. They seemed to have a very close and loving relationship.

EE is being humiliated primarily by the media – and by general public opinion in this feminist indoctrinated age. It was all supposed to be kept quiet.
But whether pre media meltdown it was a really bitter pill for her to swallow or not so much and with compensations, depends a whole hell of a lot on how Edwards handled it with her. If he remained or became more genuinely caring and loving towards his wife, out of graititude for her generosity among other things, there could be real upside. He would have had to make her really secure that he wasn’t going to leave her including emotionally.
If on the other hand he became so out of control infatuated/in love with Reilly Hunter (and she’s quite a woman of a certain high end ex party girl and muse and rather femme fatale sort — it’s worth looking her up) that he stopped flowing love to his wife, then that’s a different and much tougher thing.
Of course it would take an extraordiary woman in today’s American cultural climate to see things this way. Though not remotely so impossible for someone older as so many here seem to sure of. It is going upstream against VERY strong cultural currents here and now though.

Freud really was a pioneer in neuroscience, but there is a lot more current research that captures our psychology better (than his writings and analysis). The pre-frontal cortex does play a pivotal role in planning, but its development has nothing do with more fundamental selfishness. Planned selfishness leads to a more dangerous deviousness. I realized all this in my teens when I crushed the so-called “in crowd”. A strong person doesn’t need to abide the institutions that coddle the weak.
So in my opinion, if it is as I suspect, that John Edwards was involved in a consensual polyamorous relationship with his wife’s approval, then it’s nobody else’s damned business. Certainly not polyamorous, that is by ideology, design and intention. But sophisticated – yeah I think probably, though also not by ideology, design or intention on her part. Or only so once the total loss of her sex drive dealt it’s somewhat cruel blow.
A tremendous amount is affected by the pressures and support, or as we instead have here and now, the incessant and insistent tearing down, of the dignity status of her role as the much loved older wife. She gets none of that from anyone but her husband or if she’s lucky an understanding and unusual and same age or older close female friend or two. You can be sure she’s sought them out, probably long before this scandal arose.
EE seems like a high estrogen, loves sex because it brings her love, sort of woman. I’m NOT saying she didn’t love sex earlier, I’d guess she did. But in love sex, not “loves sex just as much as and rather like a man” kind of thing. You know, like you Clio, from what I can tell. Actually I really like EE, what I know of her. That love has special nectar because i) so many other women do want it and always have and ii) he kept showing her that he genuinely felt it towards her. His attractiveness to her went up even further though the first and his commitment and love for her was demonstrated through the second. Of course the cynics among us will say that EE could hardly do anything but very visibly and very sincerely grow ever closer to his wife through her cancer journey. The women of America, especially the heavy voting older ones were watching with sharply peeled eyes, and so were lots of husbands, esp. better betas. But nonetheless, I think she felt and feels a lot of love.
So she has her love without her now HAVING to give him sex (which can never be any good if it’s entirely a sacrifice for her, rare Russian Sonia type women excepted).
If the world will just leave her her exalted status as the loving and much loved wife of a super alpha, she doesn’t have to be too bothered by Edwards having an affair – if he doesn’t stop loving her too (which is ENTIRELY possible for men to do, much more so than for most women). Reilly Hunter, who grew up wealthy (lower division) and was I think it’s fair to say a 10 or at the very least a 9 but I’d say 10 was a big time high end party girl who eventually married a rich Cali lawyer. The marriage seems importantly centered on getting her Hollywood roles (moved there, funded stage roles) which happened only on the periphery. Quite the femme fatale of the irresistibly attractive and rather selfish but not necessarily really mean sort. Back to the pregnancy. It ain’t easy for anyone at 43, and the chances that an accident or two did the trick are tiny. She almost certainly wasn’t taking her pills or had pulled her IUD or whatever for the duration. She was at the absolute outer edge for any woman to hope to get pregnant and here she’d found her super alpha who was at least in some kind of love with her. Yeah, she went for it, for sure. I’m pretty sure she’s thinking that EE isn’t going to live forever either, or anything close.

Floccina, “Alpha” is used interchangeably to describe the upper echelon of a group or of humanity. The thing is, that what people in a particular culture consider hot isn’t necessarily hot…not nature hot. In nature, hot is functional, strong, and symmetrical. Though he’s vastly more popular, Brad Pitt is a dog compared to the late, great Henry Cele.

I am happy that I am not the only one who believes this. Ken is somewhere in the Caribbean chilling on a beach being fanned by two 10s and fed grapes by a third.
I found it strange how he died just as he was about to go to jail. Some how Ken’s trial took forever to roll around even thought he was one of the first “big money thieves” to be caught during that time.

Kenneth Lay is quite alive.
Anyone who is capable of it, and watched the pathetic chain of event around his “death” knows what happened.
“Lay was found guilty on May 25, 2006, of 10 counts against him; the judge dismissed the 11th. Because each count carried a maximum 5- to 10-year sentence, legal experts said Lay could have faced 20 to 30 years in prison.[2] However, he died while vacationing in Snowmass, Colorado on July 5, 2006, about three and a half months before his scheduled October 23 sentencing.[3] Preliminary autopsy reports state that he died of a heart attack caused by coronary artery disease. As a result of his death, on October 17, 2006 the federal district court judge who presided over the case vacated Lay’s conviction.[4].”
Oh, and vacating his conviction was “New Law”. This “New Law” allowed Lay.. I mean Lay’s family, to keep the money he stole. It’s fortunate that this “New Law” was created after Kenneth’s death, because if it had been created right before his death, that would have given him several billion reasons to fake his death. But, Thank God, a Judge is Always True, and there is No Way Kenneth could have talked to him before his “Death”. Just. Couldn’t. Happen.
The Creation of the “New Law” was also coincidence. A bizarre chain of events, because I Trust Our Court Systems.

I agree with the commenters here — like Joel and dougjnn — who see this as a pretty standard thing to have happen in a long-term marriage where one partner is ill. It can and does happen with women taking a lover as well. Rich, older, succesful people can afford to just relax and look beyond the middle-class standards that are really defined for 19-35 year olds who still have hormones at a peak and can’t emotionally handle multiple sexual partners. America is wildly hypocritical, unrealistic, and judgemental about this stuff.

The classic case is the older / old man married to a much younger woman. She may or may not have been permitted to play outside with his knowledge from the get go, but when he’s in his sixties and she’s say young and fit forties she might well be given permission to play – discretely.
