The Farmer’s Market on Fairfax and 3rd is a Los Angeles landmark, attracting tourists and everyday Angelinos alike, as well as many famous faces. I first spotted her sitting at a table in front of The Gumbo Pot with another woman who looked not unlike her, but a generation older (I neglected to ask her at any point subsequently whether this had in fact been her mother). I vaguely recognized her—there’s always a lag time placing faces you know from cable when unconfined to a telescreen—and began to notice, stealing furtive glances up from the copy of Steinbeck I was reading, that she was eyeing me with unsettling scrutiny.
The next thing I knew, her companion (mother?) had left and Coulter was standing over me, looking skeptically at my reading material.

*Why* do White folks do things like this? You know, always climinbing into wild animal habitats, “Grizzly Man” activity, “Into The Wild” stuff, and so on? It seems that only White folk, at least in America and the EU, do these things. I don’t recall hearing accounts of African Americans, Asians, etc engaged in such behaviors.
So, I want to know, is what is it in the White Psyche that drives them to do this? At this point in the game, it’s more than a one off sort of thing but much more of a trend, and a disturbing one at that.
I’m looking for earnest answers here-not diversion, ad hominem, or in any other way changing the subject. We need to find out WHY White folk tend to be more prone to these kinds of behaviors.

As a great Victorian poet Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote, “To seek, to strive, to find, and not to yield.” Which, when properly channelled, leads to the discovery of new continents, development of science, domestication of animals, conquest of primitive people, acts of courage, and fun.
An unflattering answer: many white folks are products of a an environment in which an ennui sets in on some individuals and causes them to misapply thier energies toward stupid ends.
This particular case: I suspect that the woman is mentally ill. If that’s the case, my humor at her expense is retracted.

We see this again and again, and unless you’re arguing for a religious angle being involved in all these cases, then I would say its one that seems to be lost on Peoples of Color. There has to be something in the White Psyche that speaks to this tendency; even in movies, White folks have to engage what appears to be extremely dangerous aliens (Alien, anyone?) in order to “study it”. Seems like other folk can study the same creatures from a comfortable distance.

To expand upon a point PA had made in an earlier comment, compared to minorities, white people in the United States are more likely to come from backgrounds in which physical danger is not significant. In some cases that might lead to a greater desire to take risks. Perhaps this is better expressed in the opposite sense: if you come from an environment in which physical danger is always present, for example a very high-crime neighborhood, you probably aren’t going to have much of a desire to engage in dangerous activities. That’s more likely to be the case with respect to minorities.
Once again, in this specific case, it sounds as if the woman was mentally ill.

Other posters then bring up the film Grizzly Man. Which is about a White Man who likes to study Grizzly Bears up close and personal. For his efforts he winds up their dinner.

I know someone who is suffering from a mental illness. A very pleasant, bright and attractive young woman when not having an episode. One of the sweetest people you could ever meet, which is what makes the illness that much more sad.
But during a manic episode she does really stupid things. Thankfully nothing that would get her into physical or sexual trouble. But the manic episodes do involve her having an intense conviction of very irrational things.
From what little I know of this German woman, it appears that she was mentally ill, just based on my having witnessed mentnally ill people’s behavior. Ingrid Newkirk or her acolytes at PeTA are unlikely to approach polar bears, no matter how fuzzy their feelings toward animals. Yes, they are crazy in their own way, but still grounded enough in reality to avoid getting eaten by bears.
The Grizzly Guy also seemed the type who wasn’t alltogether there.

Can’t say what it is about those people and wild animals. On some race-realist sites it’s written that whites have a unique fondness for animals, in contrast with other races, whose tratment of animals is often extremely cruel. Is that also a white / nonwhite thing? I don’t know.
But thinking back to my childhood when I read stories of 19th century explorers to other continents, I recall tales of their shock with the unhumane ways that animals were kept. Then again, we also have inhumane industrial livestock farms, so there ya go.

Doug brings in an interesting angle to the question, that of political orientation. I’ve always been of the view that there’s a reason why avoid openly talking about politics and religion in social settings, because they stand as so much more than merely going through the motions or pulling a lever; there are proxies, signs, tells, of how one views and by extension, interacts with the world. And that has massive implications. People know this. And hence why they tend to avoid open discussion of such things.
Having said that though, nit must be noted, that the vast nmajority of Black Americans vote Democrat. Same deal for Hispanics, Asians and so on. Yet its hard to find many instances of any of them doing what the German Whitw Lady, Grizzly Man or Into The Wild Guy did.

My position is that the entire Gay Marriage debate is extremely flawed, for a host of reasons. First, if there is to be any resolution at all, it should and must be so on the state level, by either the legislatures or direct ballot by the People. The feds and definitely the courts, should stay out of it. Though in principle I’m against Gay Marriage, I can live with it if the People of any given state clearly vote in favor of it.
To the wider question, what we’ve lost sight of the issue, is the original purpose of Marriage itself, which was to see to it that the next generation comes about in an orderly fashion. History and even in our time now, clearly shows us that society is best served when kids come about in an ordered arrangement called marriage. Is it perfect, no. Is it without problems, no. Is it the end all be all, no. But over the long arc of history, with all manner of arrangements tried, marriage, between one man and one woman, has proven to work best. Polygamous marriages *can* work well, but they present more problems than the one woman/one man kind, so for more practical purposes, I would tend to favor that model.
The next thing I would tackle is the grossly false logic of many gay activists and (Black) liberals, attempting to make an equivalency argument between being Black and being Gay, or between the Loving decision and th current Gay Marriage debate. Its false because there is no real comparison to be made between the circumstances of the two groups, nor of the circumstances surrounding marriage in either case.
Another major area I’d challenge Gay activists on this score is the fact that they DO want to officially change the definition of marriage while not admitting to this, which is patently intellectually dishonest; moreover, the fact that they refuse to speak to what would happen were Gay Marriage were widely instituted reveals their motivations-for example, when asked how they would feel about making Polygamy legal, or sister-brother/mother-son/father-daughter marriage legal, they refuse to takeup these very real possibilities; they could possibly be discriminated against and many of their number would argue much moreso than Gays. Why no concern for them?
These are just a few of the reasons why I say the current debate is flawed and appears to be working in the Gay activists’ favor. But as we’ve seen so many times before, stuff built on weak arguments comes crashing down sooner or later, under their own weight.

You’re most welcme OMW-however, I think the current round of Gay Marriage debate just might be a bit more far reaching than we may realize. What effect will it have on say, Game, and by wider extension, male/female relationships? For example, according to the NIH, there are “officially” more lesbians than gay men, and we already know, from studies like the recent one posted in the NYT on Female Sexuality, that its a bit more fluid and not as hardwired as Male Sexuality. So it means that Women may be more inclined to pursue say, lesbian relationships than in the past, since the potential for scandal (Notes on a Scandal, anyone? LOL) would be lessened in a post Gay Marriage environment.
Andrew Hacker examines this to some extent in his book Mismatch and is what I would consider essential reading for those of us who are interested in how that animal called Human gets on with each other in the most important of ways.

I’m asking you (and anyone else brave enough to actually tackle the question as asked): WHAT IS UP WITH WHITE FOLKS who do the kinds of things noted above? Why do they do this, when to most right thinking people, it’s highly risky, if not life threatening, behavior? Why? And why is it other races don’t seem to engage in this as much? Asians, for example, don’t do that anywhere near as much as Whites do. I mention them because for many Whites they’re an acceptable White alternative.

To start with I will say that White people who engage in high risk taking behavior are in a minority. It takes a whole truck load of guts to do this stuff whether it is pointless crazy stuff or necessary dangerous behavior.
Most people in all races are “play it safe” type people.
Why White people? My theory is that within the White racial population there might be more genes for high risk/fearless/reckless behavior than in other races. I think this might be behind that fact that White people have been the great innovators in modern global civilization when it comes to making changes in the areas that require great physical and mental courage. Aviation, aerospace and expanding the frontiers of human achievement. I include in that the creation of the modern scientific/rational world view and all of the science and engineering that goes with it. It took a lot of courage to fight off traditional religion, myth, culture and superstition to do that and it is almost completely a White phenomenon, despite the many White people who have yet to get with it.
So I think these genes will contribute to all sorts of risky/reckless/fearless behavior and it depends on intelligence and discipline whether this turns out to have innovative results or is disastrous.
Why not Asians? Well, the negative stereotype there is that Asians are cowards. They might have some smarts but no guts. Not saying that’s true but the notion of Asian docility might be involved here.
As for black risk taking remember blacks disproportionately seem to be involved in risky sexual behavior despite the well known risk of AIDS. The majority of new AIDS cases in America are overwhelmingly in the black community despite blacks only being 12% of the country. In Washington DC among the black gay male population AIDS is rampant.
Is this because blacks choose to be involved in this risky, life threatening behavior or are they too stupid to know better?
This is a huge issue in the black community, gay or straight. There is an acceptable alternative and it’s called celibacy, monogamy or using a condom. It can be a life or death choice.
So that’s my working theory for these types of seemingly unique White race based behaviors. Some group of genes acting to contribute to behavior that is bold, daring and courageous. Then, depending on the presence of other genes, differing levels of intelligence and discipline it will lead to different expressions of bold/crazy/daring/reckless behavior.
When mixed with a high IQ it leads to this:

So here is a stupid SWPL affectation – pretend you’re a Ugandan woman for, like, five whole minutes (then it’s off to brunch):
On a sunny Sunday afternoon earlier this month, about a dozen Bethany Community Church members knelt by the shores of Green Lake, filling 5-gallon jugs with water and carrying them part way around the lake.
It was a way to experience, at least for a few minutes, the heavy burden borne by women and children in Uganda who sometimes walk for miles each day to get water for drinking, cooking and washing.
The idea for the project came from a church member. The idea to tie it to Easter came from Dahlstrom. He had thought of doing the project during Lent because a large part of it is challenging church members to give up something in order to live simpler.
Yeah, live simpler, but not for very long, because living simply really sucks. Now, these SWPL types did not gain as much status from their small portion of suffering as did the guy who tried to live with the grizzlies, but the principle is the same.

White people are very stupid in many ways. Who but white people worry about stopping climate change? Who but white people give away their countries? White people have been prosperous for a couple of generations now. That leads to a very distorted outlook on life. Like, they are dying out themselves rapidly, but are worried about some silly lizard or frog going extinct.
Well, I am not worried. The Next Ice Age will straighten things out. Think about mile high ice sheets covering NY City. Not much low hanging fruit. Meanwhile, party on, Dude. Things are much better than we think.
I wonder how those mile high ice sheets will affect game? Probably not much!

Yea, I’ve always noticed that familiar theme in movies, especially of the sci-fi/horror kind; they’ll be this ominous state of affairs around which a monster or group of monsters is at the middle, like the Alien(s) series, and the White folks always seem bent of “studying it”, even though the darned thing’s been tearing your fellow homie’s apart, etc. That’s always fascinated me and I’ve always wondered what was at work in the White Psyche that leads to that. Note how in other forms of cinema around the world, like Bollywood and Nollywood, Indians and Africans don’t seem to be all that interested in messing with grusome extraterristrial creatures.
Perhaps Whiskey has some thoughts on this, as he’s something of a movie buff?

As far as “studying it,” it might have to do with a need to figure out how the monster or animal works in order to know how to fight it later.
For example, when dealing with crocodiles, it’s not always good to just avoid them. Especially when the crocodiles have a habit of sneaking up on women washing clothes in teh lake. So “studying” the crocodile gives you an ability to predict its feeding time, knowldedge of how it strikes, etc.
Ironically, I recently watched a nature documentary in which a French team of biologists went down to Uganda to teach Ugandans how to capture and neutralize man-eating crocodiles!
Because the Europeans studied the croc, they knew how to approach it, safely mount it, tie its snout, and dispatch it. Prior to getting schooled by the Europeans, the Ugandans were resigned to having an occasional child or fisherman shacned by the reptile every few days.

Of course you realize, just next door over in Kenya, that there are tribes of African Bushmen who specialize in hunting lions only with spears and the like, right? Do you honestly think Africans couldn’t make it w/o White folks teaching them how to live in the wild? Anyway, going back to White folk in the movies, one of my favorite genres is Sci-Fi, but not for the obvious reasons; to me, its a compelling commentary of how White folks see themselves in the future. And, not surprisingly, other folk don’t feature as prominently, if at all, in said future.
I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, but years ago in the early days of CGI movies like Toy Story, there was this flick called Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. I was visiting family for Thanksgiving, and chillin on the couch with my nephew Khalil, who was about 7 or 8 at the time or so.
The movie, while made for kids, was of the scifi bent: a race of the ghosts of alien warriors comes to Earth for some reason, and the human race has to sort it all out.
Anyway, there’s this scene where Earth is being overrun by the alien ghosts, and the humans have to get outta Dodge. The team consists of he blonde haired GI Joe type, a bald White older scientist type, a few other White figures, and finally the Noble Negro-a Black Sergeant (note how Black guys are almost always NCOs) who valiantly fights off the encroaching, overwhelming onslaught of the alien ghosts, since he just happens to get injured, and decides to sacrifice himself to save the “rest” of humanity. That buys the rest of the team time 2 get on the spaceship and blastoff into space.
After that sequence, my nephew looked up at me and said, Uncle, can I ask you a question?
Sure, I said to my nephew. What’s on your mind?

That was one of the few times in my life that I was stunned and speechless for a few minutes.

I don’t know enough about Africans and their coexistance with local wildlife t ohave a meaningful opinion. I’m not certain about this, but I have a theory wrt crocs etc-it’s been my experience, that Black folk on a whole aren’t particularly interested in aquatic things. That may sound utterly simplistic, but I tell you, if you look around you’ll find a similar result. And that may have something to do with what you saw on the tube recently. Just a thought.
As for your other comment about small kids not being bogged down by seeing other groups, why not? Isn’t the reality of the world, that its made up of all kinds of people? In fact that’s what made me such a fan of Star Trek as a kid growing up, *because* it had so many different races of folk. It would have been very boring if all there was, was Captain Kirk (btw, there’s a “new” Star Trek about the drop next month, directed by JJ Abrams. It looks slick, but the titular roles, Kirk and Spock, look like college kids, not more mature spacefarers. Hmm). So, I think its very important to expose kids early on to the realities of our world. But then maybe most Whites can afford to live in a bubble.
Another fave genre of mine is the Westerns. LOVE WESTERNS. The Spaghetti Westerns of Clint Eastwood, Young Guns, all the flicks made about Wyatt Earp, you name it. But here’s the thing:
There were rarely, if ever, Black folks prominently featured. And Westerns have been around for a very long time. One has to wonder why, given the fact that one in every three Cowboys were Black. Hmm.

I liked black characters in 80s TV and movies. They were usually suave, often with that jheri curl thing that I thought was cool. Examples are the best-buddy black character on TV shows.
There was none of that tension thing that started showing up in the early 90s. Today, it’s impossible to see a black character that isn’t in one way or another pointedly superior in that obnoxious race-baiting (on the part of the media producers) way the the white character(s).
Things were just more laid back up until the PC explosion that came in with the 1990s. For example, WTF is it with Friends or Seinfeld shows, which were almost 100% devoid of black characters, except in an occasional episode tha tshowed some obnoxious black kid kicking Ross Geller and then grinning victoriously. Something the kid shoudl have been slapped for!
Or a nasty black woman giving a thunderous lecture on somethign to George Costanza.

LOL, yea, I guess you could say something like that. Afterall, you’re not likely to find many Olympic level swimmers and divers who are Black, and believe me we know what swimming pools look like. We just not terribly interested in such things for some reason.
As for Friends and Seinfeld, and I’ve personally enjoyed the latter more than the former, I think both shows are a fascinating insight into the White Psyche. Here we have two shows set in a city where its very hard to make it thru your day w/o having run accross at least a handful of Black folk, yet one can count on perhaps one hand, of all the episodes of both shows, the number of Black folk who appear. I think that’s quite a profound commentary myself.
As for the “obnoxious” (read, arrogant, chip on the shoulder, angry) Black, well, we have to keep in mind that even now, most show and movie writers are White, and that plays a role. They may be using the Black figures to drive home a point about the show on a whole, or about a particular character on the show, or both. This makes sense, since so often Black folk themes and issues are often used by Whites as a kind of buffer in some cases and a cudgel in others, with which to whup up on other White folk. As American as Apple Pie. 🙂
The Jheri curl thing was hilarious, and could never see how so many Black folk went for that one, LOL.
As for Black roles, im for all of it because there are all types in Black America. So there’s room for the Cosby Show, and there’s room for Nino Brown, too.

Very interesting observation, Alvin Poussaint would be pleased. 🙂 I think it can be seen several ways: one which is the way you suggested, but the other being just how far Whites especially, because other races don’t seem to go to this extent, go to avoid other people of Color, and particularly Black folks, on ANY level. Even in terms of passerby. If you study Woody Allen films, Seinfeld and Friends, one is hardpressed to even see Black folk especially, and other people of color more generally, even in the background. I say it all, when you add it up-Westerns, SciFi, Sitcoms, and the like, all serves as a fascinating insight into what I call the White Psyche, which on some levels is delusional, in that it seems to have trouble handling and accepting the fact that other people exist, meaningfully, in the world.

Having said that though, the way you try to twist the discussion into a kind of bashing Black folk is kinda standard operating procedure for you, plus its irrelevant; so what if the HIV/AIDS infection is high in DC? What does that have to do with Grizzly Man, Into The Wild and the Fat White Lady? Nothing from where I sit, it’s just yet another case of Willard needing to feed his psyche’s need to putatively dump on Black folks.

Yup, generally speaking, its true: Black like to make whoppie, and tends to do it moreso than the average White. Moreover, I can tel you that the vast majority of Black Men do not like using condoms. Now, having said that, yes, the risk for STDs are higher in light of the aforementioned-and-are you listening Willard-Black folk tend to be more polyamorous than Whites on average, hence, one of the major reasons why the HIV/AIDS rate is so much higher. Now we can go off into all manner of moralistic arguments and the like, fine, but I’m simply sayin.
As for the Downlow issue in the hood, it’s there, but I honestly don’t think it’s as big as it actually is. I think a bit of it is hype. I also think all the handwringing done on behalf of Black Women is in a way kinda of a smokescreen to cover the fact that lots of Black Women don’t really have that big a problem having sex w/the same Man, under the right conditions, of course. This is more common than in the White community for a number of reasons, and not for the ones you might think-one of them being, that there are more Alphas among Black Males than they are among White ones. And Women of all races like offer herself up to Alphas.

Maybe that’s because White people are becoming increasingly naturalistic in their worldview and are less likely to believe in superstitions and religious mythology so they have to invent biological monsters to focus on. Religion and myth are still part of the White world but it’s weakening in comparison to the black and brown world.
Maybe Indians and Africans still believe in spooks and spirits that haunt their imaginations so they don’t need to invent an imaginary extraterrestrial civilization to satisfy this psychic need.

Here’s a pretty good example of the White Psyche and Seinfeld. Funny but also very deep.
A deeper issue might be what is it about the black psyche that fears being excluded from the attention of the White Psyche. Why do so many blacks crave the attention and acceptance of White folks? Why do so many blacks feel deeply threatened and insecure when they see White folks in TV/movies socializing WITHOUT the presence of blacks?
If somebody black made a movie about their experiences and didn’t include White people the fact is most White folks wouldn’t care. They’d just say that’s for blacks and move on.
The black psyche can’t do that. The black psyche is wounded and threatened by exclusion from the White Psyche. Why is that?
It probably gets back to the fact that at one time blacks were the property of White folks. They were owned, named and numbered by the White Man and this has left a fundamental flaw in the black psyche.
As I’ve said before if you mix this with the black boy’s own Oedipal Complex you will be better able to understand the black male obsession with the White Woman and his desperate need for her attention and sexual acceptance.
I think on another level many White people are just bored with the mediocrity of most people of all races. That’s why they become fascinated with real or imaginary creatures and why they want “to boldly go where no man has gone before”. Either in science or science fiction.
Humans of any race or culture are a pretty dull and similar lot despite external differences.

I never said ALL ASIANS are cowards. I’m sure the White men in history who slaughtered millions of Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese and Koreans will testify that there are plenty of courageous warriors among Asians.
But it’s silly to think that Samurai are more typical of Asian males than the average Japanese peasant who grovelled in fear in the face of these men.
The stereotype of Asian docility might have some truth to it despite the reality of Asian warriors, samurai or Bruce Lee movies. We all have heard about Asian males being less capable of Game in relation to women. I don’t know if that is true but again it might be related to a kind of Asian docility.
I don’t think that you could argue that just because Asia has a huge population that therefore Asian males must have great Game. We all know Asian males are capable of making babies.
The issued YOU raised was why more White risk taking behavior and not Asian. You could also ask why did forms of democracy, capitalism and individualism rise among White folks but not Asians.
There may be again genes for “reckless individualism” that predominate among White folks more than Asians. Maybe White folks have more genes for bold, daring, risky, reckless behavior COMBINED with more genes for individualism. Maybe.

India is and has been for thousands of years, overwhelmingly Hindu, which focus on a polytheistic view of God, whereas Africa, in more recent centuries, has shifted from a more Animist/Pagan God centered view, to today, being overwhelmingly Islamic or Christian, in that order in terms of total numbers of adherents. And keep in mind, both religions emphasize the One God. Now, unless you think there’s something outside of these facts that accounts for the reasons why Bollywood and Nollywood aren’t much interested in “studying” Aliens-type creatures (and basically being wiped out by them in the end), you’re gonna have to come up with a better theory than that, W.
Let’s tackle another question you asked: why is it Black folk always seem to clamor being in the picture with Whites? Well, the answer to that one ought to be obvious, but I know history isn’t you’re strong suit-its because Black folk are a part of this country, that’s why-and when we can look at damn near a century’s worth of Westerns, from Wyatt Earp to Bonanza, and not see one prominent Black face in the lot of em, even when we know, for a fact, that a total one third of all Cowboys were Black, well that matters to us. Its because when we see Star Trek and Star Wars ad Alien(s) and Red Planet and Final Fantasy and so on, we want to be seen as also having a future. And not just in a token amount to assauge White folks sometimes delusional sensibilities, either. Its because when we see stuff like Sienfeld and Friends and Woody Allen movies, made not in Fargo North Dakota, where The Big Chill was set, but in thee most multicultural capital of the entire world in the history of human beings, Black folk tend to scratch their head at how its possible for these shows and films to proliferate, for years, in such a city, and not even see Black folk walking by in the background. Back in 1989, when Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed Do The Right Thing came out in theatres, he was invited on Oprah to discuss the film. Several seemingly irate White Males were in the audience, who demanded to know why Lee didn’t feature White folks in his films more prominently than he did at the time. Lee’s response was iconic: he asked why it was that these White guys, nor anyone else White, demanded to ask Woody Allen how it was possible to shoot virtually every film he’d ever done in his long career in a city like NYC and NOT see one Black face in them? Of course, the irate White guys had no intelligible reply.
Perhaps you can do better.

A major reason is that if no one scores a decisive punch against the other guy, they’ll just keep punching at each other without any real effect (jabbing at the shoulder, back, torso, tensed-up stomach, etc) and within a minute both will be too tired to punch.
Ever see boxers go into lactic aciodosis? That’s when the arms feel like they weigh a ton and they keep “hugging” each other.

Actually many people are very open about it. Women have started to look the other way when it comes to any man who has been in jail/prison for a significant period of time. Many of us understand the need men have for physical affection and being that prison is segragated by gender, many men break down and have same sex relationships.

Although I’ve seen quite a few bumrushes in my time (and been the target of a few, too), I’ve also seen quite a few one on one fights, all Brothas, so I really don’t see this notion of the Black Man having the lock on the Bumrush as the gospel truth or something, especially since we all can point to Whites and other groups doing this, too.
Having said that, a popular saying in Boxing is Styles makes Fights. My style is to simply wear the other Man down, by strong defense, precision punches and strikes, making optimal use of my surroundings, making him chase me, etc. Make him tired. Make him frustrated. In fact, the longer the fight goes, the better.
Really good boxers know how to soften a spot or two up on a body, and then just keep hitting that spot. Yea, I know about the “lead arms” thing you mentioned, but you gotta remember, I’m no stranger to long distance workouts (recall the concrete job I did w/my Dad).
So, I’m very happy w/just tapping you w/punches, bobbing and weaving, good footwork, getting you to come in and then sidestep, especialy if a obstacle is right behind me. I don’t allow folk to grip me up. Keep your distance.
And we keep that up as long as the opponent likes-half hour, hour, or more. Doesn’t matter to me. When they eventually tire, that’s when I take them out. I’ve done it. Several times.

Given the choice, most Women would choose to have one Man exclusively, and when one thinks about it, this makes sense.

True, what you say about China and Europe is onpoint, however, the kinds of polyamorous relationship scenarios don’t seem to be as much in evidence there, especially as it relates to the HIV problem. Although I can’t recall their names right now, there have been indepth studies done by various doctors and scientists in Africa who says that the main problem driving infection rates, aside from not using condoms (it is well known that Black Men by and large loathe them) is the nature of polyamorous sexual relationships in African and by extension, African American society. For reasons that I’ve pointed out to Willard, it seems pretty clear to my why its more prevalent there than in other societies. Maybe the theory doesn’t pan out, but from where I sit it all makes sense. That’s the weird fluke about white people. When we think of “white people”, one generally thinks of billionaire businessmen, politicians, and trust fund types, and even to a lesser extent, the upper middle class professional family. Nobody ever really contemplates the poor whites (who may be of low IQ) who are in low paying service sector type jobs.
Why do so many blacks feel deeply threatened and insecure when they see White folks in TV/movies socializing WITHOUT the presence of blacks?
IIRC, I remember reading over at Half Sigma’s place that there’s a sizable chunk of the black population that believes that it’s numbers are far greater than currently counted. I suspect that assessment is inflated by the fact that black people generally live with other black people and thus have very little real contact with white people. Plus, IIRC, outside of the South, the black population is basically in metro areas, so for most black people, it appears that they make up “half” of the country if they’re used to mixed area places like large offices or malls in metro areas. Also, there have always been historical legacies clouding up the representation issue.
Interestingly, my Canadian mistress was rather surprised at the fact that the black population of the US barely amounts to more than a tenth (12.5%) of the population. She was rather shocked that Canada’s black population barely amounts to 3% of the country. In my anecdotal experience, telling black people the actual percentage of the population strikes them as rather low in most cases, and most have elicited feelings of surprise at the statistics. Most generally have stated around 20% to 25%, and sometimes as high as 50%.
Mind you, Obsidian’s writings above about feeling “involved”, certain do have a role to play in some of it, but as somebody who watched Seinfeld and Friends, I never really felt threatened by the lack of black characters on most TV shows. It’s probably better that they’re not there, than the writers put in a token, non-realistic character that really doesn’t serve any purpose.

This is why I referenced Poussaint, because it is delusional to have such a view, and why I mentioned the reality of Cowboys in the West and nearly a century of cinematic portrayals of the West-theres a huge disconnect there. I also wanted to speak to Dave’s “inclusion of Black folk” comments.
I think its fair to say, that Black folk on a whole, have much more interaction w/Whites, than the other way around. Now, the reason for that is pretty cut and dry-Whites, contrary to the opinion of some here, still do run things, make final decisions and the like in this country. One can argue whether that’s good or bad, but that is a fact, and has been for virtually the whole of this country’s history.
I think another way to look at this issue is in Jewish America terms, who makeup about 3% total of the US population-yet, when you consider onscreen portrayals, they easily outclass Black folk, being grossly overrepresented. And, last time I checked, there didn’t seem to be a huge hew and cry over that.
I also think one reason why Black folk may seem to be overrepresented to an extent in certain films and tv shows, is because so often, they tend to be set in places where Black folk can be seen in larger numbers-like urban inner cities. Few shows and movies are set in Appalachia, or the more rural, and mainly White, areas of the country. Again, please note that Black folk didn’t say anything about the lack of Black faces in the film The Big Chill, which was critically acclaimed.

I think its fair to say that history can find us, and even in our own experience can ferret out for us, far more instances of a Man successfully conducting a ltr w/two or more Women, than the other way around. We both agree, that Women simply aren’t wired that way, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too.
We also have to be careful to point out that Women actually favor polygamy moreso than Men do, since Men understand that they may well be the Last Man Standing when the music stops. I personally think the whole Downlow thing gets lots of ink because of its man bites dog quality and nature; again, the more likely case is a virtual harem of Women fuckin the same Man, which raises the chances of any one of them being infected, mainly due to the Women are made and because of the fact that its widely known that Black Men tend to frown on condom use.

Let me say this, a woman who conducts two relationships at the same time will most likely hide them since that type of behavior is frowned on. Furthermore, the threat of male violence is so high in this type of arrangement that only a woman who is truly devious will attempt successfully pull of two relationships at the same time. Third let’s not forget the kids MU. Every woman with a little bit of sense knows it’s best to have all of her children by one goodman.
We both agree, that Women simply aren’t wired that way, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too.

We also have to be careful to point out that Women actually favor polygamy moreso than Men do

I think another way to look at this issue is in Jewish America terms, who makeup about 3% total of the US population-yet
It’s a slightly similar effect as well, since Jews tend to congregate in areas where other Jews live, so it tends to inflate their worldview somewhat. Plus, I’d contend that they’re really writing about what they know about. I remember watching an quasi-documentary on Good Times, and one of the complaints by the actors was that the writers had no idea of how to write for realistic black characters. I’d question if much as changed over the years…

I happen to have a very good friend, who’s workd for more than a decade in public health; in fact the program he worked in had to do with educating schoolaged boys about things like HIV and AIDS, along with other STDs.
I got a chance to peruse a lot of the studies material coming out of the NIH and the CDC in Atlanta, because either he or someone else in the office had to go down there frequently for conferences and meetings, etc.
The studies were fascinating; since the program focused on African Americans, the stats were compared to other groups. By a countrymile, Black folk use contraceptives less, than do Whites, Asians and so on. In the case of Hispanics, its a bit closer.
In the many “circles” I had acess to, discussion groups with Black Men and Boys on these issues that my buddy’s job conducted, one prominent theme kept recurring: a near adamant refusal to wear condoms.
On top of that, here in Philly there was an indepth study done to determine who was infected w/STDs and who wasn’t; in the hotbeds of STD activity, not only were they predominately Black, but there were far more females to males *being* infected. That’s what made me think that a kind of de facto polygamous thing was going on-and this was, what, at least 5 years ago?
Bottomline: Women, if given the choice, free from rebuke, shaming or recrimination, will choose who they deem is the most dominant Male in the environment-and will share him rather not have him at all.

I must admit, seeing a middle aged family man spouting off revolutionary ideals in the context of a *sitcom* does come across as a bit silly. If this was for a well-written drama, the father in that role would probably make more sense. Plus, I suspect given the era in which the show was written, it would have been somewhat threatening to whites.

I wouldn’t argue that it’s fear of the medical system given that black people still go to hospitals and doctors whenever they’re sick, and black people lagged behind whites in breast feeding, while continuing to use baby formula. I really do suspect that it’s low IQ that may cause some women to simply forget or not even think about properly taking birth control, while others have misguided ideas and falsehoods about ways of avoiding pregnancy. Other may simply have the children to feel emotionally secure, while some may use it as a means of asserting adulthood, and some use their children as bartering chips to get Section 8 and to leave their parent’s homes on taxpayer dollars. One must not neglect those who have kids to keep their boyfriends around and those who just want an alpha’s baby.

The tailend of your GT comments was on it: White test audiences were threatened by a Black Man saying those kinds of things. Norman Lear, the creator of the show, was himself disgusted by the response, and had numerous frictions with, I think it was CBS, over the creative direction and focus of the show. He also fell out with them over the demise of James Evans, effectively making Florida a single mom.

Actually, if IQ has anything to say about reproduction, its that those who have higher IQs tend to reproduce a whole lot less than their cognitive lessers-a problem they need to address, instead of hatin’ on the latter group in a highbrow manner. Unless, that is, they’re cool with Genetic Annihilation-theirs.
There’s a really good book called Promises I Can’t Keep that I suggest both of you check out if you haven’t already. It’s about Poor Black, White and Hispanic women who choose to have babies. Note the key word here-CHOOSE. It wasn’t by accident. They knew exactly what they were doing. The rationalization on the part of the authors, was that the one thing folk like them could have complete control over, was their loins and the product(s) therefrom.
And its true, Black moms breastfeed their kids a whole lot less than do White moms-although I’m not as quick to draw the conclusion that this accounts for any problems Black kids may have. We have to keep in mind, that breastfeeding only came back in fashion over the past three decades or so, and during the Baby Boom years, hardly any mom breastfed and baby formula was the norm, Black and White.

I recently visited an LDR of a hospital when a relative gave birth and among the multitude of health-related brochures and fliers saw one titles “Breast Feeding for African-American Women.” I wanted to ask the nurse for one on breastfeeding for European-American women, but left it alone.

To David Alexander: your Canadian mistress, I’m presuming, lives in a big metropolis, like the Greater Toronto Area. I presume this, because the only way a black Canadian could be so deluded as to figure they comprise 25-50% of the population, is if that’s what they observe in their day-to-day life; e.g. such as would be the case in many parts of Toronto.
A black Canadian growing up in a rural area would know better, and probably estimate close to the 3% actual proportion. Believe me; I’m a minority Canadian myself; I was the only dark-skinned kid at my elementary school, and I was made painfully aware of that fact, repeatedly.

Regarding breastfeeding for AA women.
I think there are large differences in the rate of breastfeeding between white and black women.
Breasfeeding is thought to be very good for the child (far better than formula).
Amongst other things it is associated with healthy brain development. Some estimate that an increase in black breastfeeding could add five points to the average black IQ.
[Breast milk contains a large amounts of healthy fats not found in formula. And lets not forget parent/child bonding]
Maybe the people producing these brochures are not Whitermom types at all…

Just that about a million overeducated, undertalented women with apparently nothing more interesting to do have an unpleasant tendency to get involved in “breastfeeding advocacy” and taint the entire thing by association.
You walk into a La Leche League meeting sometime and tell me what you see.
Some do mean well, but the posturing masses have a tendency to inflate the whole process into a status competition where they’re holding the best hand at the table. Typical, no?
That said, the IQ and breastfeeding link had been disproven, last I heard.
Not that it’s not beneficial, not that it’s not wonderful, but the whole thing, IMO, has been just a “titch” oversold.
