The Romans Didn’t Like Fat Chicks Either

September 17, 2009 by CH

More evidence that thin has always been in. (Hat tip: Reader SB7.) The fourth century Romans of the Villa Romana del Casale and the surrounding town of Platia created mosaics of slender babes well within the optimal 17 – 23 BMI range frolicking in bikinis while playing outdoor games and generally looking cute.

romanlovelies

Not a BBW or chubster in sight!

I feel the spirit of Dr. Seuss move me.

Do you like
chicks shaped like ham?
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.
I do not like
chicks shaped like ham.

Would you like them
now or then?

I would not like them
now or then.
I would not like them ever again.

I do not like
chicks shaped like ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

Would you like them in your bed?
Would you like them giving head?

I do not like them
in my bed.
I do not like them
giving head.
I do not like them
now or then.
I do not like them
ever again.
I do not like
chicks shaped like ham.
I do not like them,
Sam-I-am.

Would you eat them
in their box?
Would you poke them
with your cox?

Not in their box.
Not with my cox.
Not in my bed.
Not giving head.
I would not poke them
here or there.
I would not poke them anywhere.
I would not poke chicks made of ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

I’ll be in all zee veek!

I really don’t get the whole uproar going on; clearly slender is optimal, pretty much universally.

Shit the first time I got hurt and grounded from the gym and had a boyfriend comment on the difference it made to my physique I accepted that, no, skinniness was not actually mandated and driven by women, despite what cosmo told me. To bad wine is so delicious …

[editor: wine shouldn’t pack on the pounds. it’s got about the same amount of calories as light beer and only a quarter of the insulin spiking carbs of regular beer.]

PS- love the poem, but keep picturing the most rotund, but successful, cox I ever met. Picturing her, in her round fem dike glory, and you = …!

Has anyone ever answered this question:

For all the guys that supposedly are attracted to fat women, why did none of them have any posters on their walls of fat women when they were 14 years old.

I have never met a single guy who had a picture of a fat girl up on his wall when he was young. And I do not think that it is peer pressure, because some guys in college had some unusual girls on their walls.

“The National Research Council reported this spring that women who earn Ph.D.s in science (though there are still far fewer of them than men) are as likely to land teaching positions, promotions and tenure at major research universities as their male counterparts. During the same week the National Academy of Sciences reported that girls in the U.S. have now reached parity with boys in mathematical achievement. Currently universities are reporting marked increases in female enrollment in science, engineering and math degree programs.”

Rather than debating the social utility of the proliferation of ‘weighty women’ in our nation, I was wondering if anyone could present any practical ideas as to how Fitness, Holistic [in the medical sense, not the ‘hippy’ sense] Health and Personal Aesthetics could be reintroduced to mainstream America?

This crisis was borne from various longterm marketing campaigns; Is it possible it could be mitigated with similar strategies?

Dr Seuss madness! Very funny. But if this was the equivalent of a girls’ athletic high school, it might be an anomaly in exactly that way – the ancient-mural equivalent of a trophy case. Doesn’t undermine your case that fat women were never attractive to the men of any mainstream culture in human history, but it’s the same error as the fat-statues-as-earth-goddesses: one sample data point does not prove a point conclusively. But then again, due to the paucity of data points, it may be the best we can do.

Next up: “The Lorax” meets up with “The Cat in the Hat”. They go pick up hot Who-girls in Who-ville. But *their*, uh, hearts are not three sizes too small.

I think 14 year old boys put up pictures of hot chicks mainly to prove to themselves and others they are not gay.

Anyway, I agree with Roissy’s main point. If you took the hottest chick from the Roman Empire and gave her a shower and some dental work, she could walk down the street in New York and have men drooling over her.

And by the way, if you do an image search for “marilyn monroe,” you will she that she was slender for most of her career and that she was never a fatty.

I agree with the main point, but it should be added that the Romans didn’t like adult chicks as much as barely pubescent chicks either.

[editor: they have boobs and hips. that makes them post-pubescent. also, see the link above helpfully provided by another commenter. and do try and stop being a nutcase, k?]

Adult women should not be trying to look like 13 year olds, regardless of what men like.

Unless my work monitor is way skewed, I do not know how you can tell that from the pictures; they may not require extra strength jogbras, but they appear to have muscles, definitely have hips, and could have been menstruating for 10 years. Or 1. It’s unclear.

And with that, I’m going to go take my new fall heels for a spin. Enjoy debating whether you can still be healthy/attractive even if you’re up to 18 pounds overweight!

Lee, there were likely fetishists and large, strong men who didn’t enjoy injuring women during sex in ancient Rome too, but the rule was that newly nubile was most attractive. This is very natural, and isn’t harmful if the society prepares its people to become psychologically adult at the time that they become physically adult.

One thing I find good about this is that one of the forms Romans idealized was the athletic female. Warms my heart to think that perhaps in another time and place, I’d have been an exotic gymnast or at least a well regarded and entertaining slave, rather than being trapped in a prison of arrested development victims for 8 hours a day.

…and by 25, I’d have died of tonsillitis, but I’d have died well loved.

Roissy says, “[editor: they have boobs and hips. that makes them post-pubescent.”

I had boobs and hips at 9. Most girls do by age 11 or so.

“also, see the link above helpfully provided by another commenter. and do try and stop being a nutcase, k?]”

The link is to a Google images page. It doesn’t state their age.

I’m going on their looks and the assumption that for ancient Romans, “young girls” does not mean the same thing that “teens” means in porn today.

These young girls are also, for the most part, quite muscular about the shoulders, and masculine looking. They look like just about every 11-13 year old gymnast I’ve ever seen.

I may be a nutcase, but I’m a nutcase who has seen many girls like this, and was one herself…just in martial arts, not gymnastics.

“[false presumption. slender adult women don’t look like 13 year olds. are you still stupid?]”

Okay, then I’m stupid because I believe the historian propaganda that men in ancient times and more primitive cultures prefer early teenage girls. It’s all a lie right?

A good first step would be the removal of blacks and hispanics from the nation. Both are more prone to obesity. Once sent back to Africa and Latin America, they’ll shed those pounds very quickly and will remain slim. As an added side benefit, crime would be greatly reduced in the US and there will be less of those stupid cars with fart mufflers.

“Unlike the women of Athens, Spartan women were taught reading and writing. They were also expected to be able to protect themselves. Where in Athens, the education of a girl involved spinning, weaving, and other domestic arts, for a Spartan woman such tasks were relegated to the helots or perioeci. A girl’s education was equally as brutal as the men’s; many athletic events such as javelin, discus, foot races, and staged battles were also for both sexes. In many such events, Spartan women would run naked in the presence of their male counterparts and were respected for their athletic feats. Though women in Sparta were not subject to the same training as given by Lycurgus, Spartan women were expected and driven to produce strong and healthy children, and to be loyal to their state. Spartan girls were better fed their Athenian counterparts, and were taught writing, something which Menander (an Athenian) said, “Teaching a woman to read and write? What a terrible thing to do! Like feeding a vile snake on more poison.”

Marriage for a Spartan woman was an almost non-ceremonial event. The woman was abducted in the night by her suitor, her head was shaved, and she was made to wear men’s clothing and lye on a straw pallet in the dark. From there on she would meet with her husband for almost entirely procreative reasons. If she was formerly a girl, she became a woman through marriage. Any Spartan man could abduct a wife, which led to a system of polyandry (many husbands, one wife or vice versa) in Sparta. When a child was born, the woman had little to do with the his/her upbringing, rather nurses handled the child’s care (in addition, a female Spartan child was subject to the same tests of strength as a male child.).

Women’s roles in Sparta were not limited to marriage and procreation. Spartan women had many rights that other Greek women did not have. Namely, they could own and control their own property. They could also take another husband if their first had been away at war for too long. A woman was expected in times of war to overtake her husband’s property, and to guard it against invaders and revolts until her husband returned; hence many Spartan women are pictured as warriors. “

While we’re at the subject of the Romans, how’s this for alpha attitude and body language?

In his History of Rome, Livy narrates the following event that happened around 390BC, while the Capitol of Rome was being besieged by the Gauls:

A young Roman attracted the wondering admiration of fellow citizens and foes. There was an annual sacrifice to be made on the Quirinal hill by the family of the Fabii. To celebrate it, Gaius Fabius Corso, wearing the Gabinian cincture and with the sacred vessels in his hands, descended from the Capitol, passed through the midst of the enemy’s pickets and, regardless of any words or threats, proceeded to the Quirinal, where he duly accomplished all the rites. He then returned the same way, withe the same resolute countenance and gait, in the full assurance of the favor of the gods whose service not even the fear of death could cause him to neglect

Think about this next time you feel nervous and anxious around chicks.

Yeah, I must have been overdeveloped because I was fat.

    Mm Hmm.

    That’s the reason for everything.

Y’all wonder why feminists are confused. In American English, fat means overdeveloped, socially inconvenient, not putting out, not interested in showing your classmates your boobs, turning 30, especially turning 40, and is the culmination of everything that is wrong with women today.

If you want to be less easily manipulated, you may want to try using fat to mean actually fat, and not to mean everything that doesn’t have jack to do with fat.

he wouldn’t take his eyes off his opponent, once his opponent looked down, even for a tenth of a second, tyson called this a “chink in his armor” and that by using such dominant eye contact, tyson had “broken his spirits”

he came out of the locker room “scared but supremely confident” and as he tracked his way to the ring… his fear dissipated

Spartan social norms were utterly dependent on everybody having slaves in abundance. (Labor saving devices). That was key to womens “independence”. Same as in old Norse societies.

Aussie, in the U.S. the average age of menarche is 12. It usually starts 2 years after their boobs start to grow. It can happen between the ages of 8 and 16.

Different girls develop at different rates, and bodyfat may have something to do with it. It wasn’t until recently though, that childhood obesity became a problem, and it’s much more of a problem for Hispanic kids than it is for White or Black kids in the U.S.

The vast majority of kids are not fat though. I certainly wasn’t. I just came from a family of early developers. My grandmother had her first child at 13.

Sparta was an extreme outlier in Greece and the ancient world and has been a leading model for totalitarian states since, both national socialist and communist. Unlike Athens and certain other Greek cities, and then post Alexander the Great especially Alexandria, Sparta contributed little to the sciences or philosophy.

Sparta’s child rearing and family practices were way out in collectivist left field. Though you’re wrong about women not raising their own children at all. They did when they were young. Then after a certain age, i don’t recall

Further Spartans nakedly and massively made serfs (with few rights, some call them slaves) of their fellow Greeks, their Helots, which was generally considered verboten in Greece. The Helots were the original Greek inhabitants to the land that the Spartans invaded, and much more numerous. Something like 10 to 1. North of 5 to 1 anyway. It’s disputed.

Sparta was the ultimate militaristic society. Spartan men were nearly all soldiers (or when older in government etc.). They were full time professional soldiers. Those few that couldn’t take the tough training, testing and competition and dropped out or were kicked out and so weren’t were considered abject failures. Labor was done by the Helots. Elsewhere in Greece armies were composed of part time solders who farmed and raised livestock, or were merchants, etc.

While Sparta boasted of extremely well disciplined, trained and hardened phalanx warriors, Sparta was also lagging at creative military tactics and strategy. She stuck to her old ways. Not only was she completely outmatched by the Athenians at sea, she was also eventually defeated on land by the Thebeans, under the leadership of a creative general there.

Sparta is no model to follow.

Yeah Hispanics especially of the illegal immigrant variety have more of an obesity problem than whites. (Originally illegals I’m talking here, whether they’ve subsequently benefited from one of the amnesty programs or not – goes to class and in turn to amounts on average of Indio in them.)

But more of an obesity problem than blacks? I doubt it. Or if so, I’d guess it’s neck and neck. In fact I believe I’ve seen things on that.

Eumaios, I forgot that the standard for obesity lowered substantially since the 80s.

However, most kids of any color are still not fat. Black girls aren’t enough of the U.S. population to bust the national curve for onset of menarche.

So if the whole point is to say (again) that Black women are all or mostly fat ugly bitchy whores then this has already said. What you cannot prove however, is that we the fat bitches among only 8% of the population, are responsible for the average age of menarche being 12.

“Sparta’s child rearing and family practices were way out in collectivist left field. Though you’re wrong about women not raising their own children at all. They did when they were young. Then after a certain age, i don’t recall

    …

While Sparta boasted of extremely well disciplined, trained and hardened phalanx warriors, Sparta was also lagging at creative military tactics and strategy. She stuck to her old ways. Not only was she completely outmatched by the Athenians at sea, she was also eventually defeated on land by the Thebeans, under the leadership of a creative general there.”

You may be interested in Gary Brecher had to say about Sparta:

“Wanna know what a Spartan wedding night was really like? It’s pretty hilarious, in an insane way. As soon as a Spartan girl got her first period, they grabbed her, shaved her head, dressed her as a boy, threw her down on her new husband’s bed, and then, well, he had his way with her. What way was that? Since hubby had been in an all-male dorm since age seven, I’m betting that that night of lovin’ was more like a skinny white boy’s introduction to San Quentin after lights-out than it was like a chick flick. So when this movie shows the Spartan hero saying to his wife, “Goodbye, my love,” I just had to laugh.

No Spartan ever told his wife he loved her. That would’ve been like treason, because the Spartan rulers wanted family ties snapped, so the only bond left was to the state. They left room for folks’ natural urges by letting the women drink, which they did non-stop, and the men form what you might call close comradely bonds with their fellow soldiers.

    …

The Thebans under a really brilliant general, Epaminondas, crushed the Spartans in the battle of Leuctra (371 B.C.) because Epaminondas just plain out-thought those lummoxes. He knew exactly how the Spartans would stack their forces in battle order, because they always did it the same way. So he tinkered with the conventional phalanx-stacking set-up and those Thebans, most of them ordinary Greek citizen-soldiers, mere amateurs by Spartan standards, kicked Spartan ass right down the line. The Helots, the locals the Spartans had enslaved and terrorized for generations, finally got a chance for payback and Sparta withered away to nothing. Game over.”

1 Way says, “A good first step would be the removal of blacks and hispanics from the nation. Both are more prone to obesity.”

While you’re at it, remove the White people. There were almost no fat people in America before Europeans arrived.

(For the humor impaired, this is said tongue in cheek. I do not wish to actually repatriate all non indigenous Americans back to their countries of origin.)

It is a big fat lie that Black people are “genetically fat”. Hispanics with certain central and South American indigenous ancestry may be. From the looks of people close to their original culture, it’s more like genetically rounded…maybe chubby, but definitely not obese.

Aoefe says, “Ghost of Nicole, I believe Lupo was summarizing dear.”

    …but what was he summarizing?

I think I’m the only admittedly fat woman here, and I have never said “fat is beautiful” or that men do, in general, or should, in general, find obesity attractive.

So it appears that, as usual, some guys’ girly slips are showing. They’re attempting to insult a woman who doesn’t exist except in their imaginations.

Their belief, despite all reality…walls of text to the contrary, is that since I myself am fat, I *must* be saying that they’re all obligated to love me for my fat and that any man who doesn’t is a meanie…or whatever.

Again, this is not what I’m saying or what I’ve ever said. What I’ve always said here on the subject is that:

    1. Fat bashing is childish.

    2. Fat bashing does not educate fat people on how to change their diet.

    3. Those who are sincerely interested in helping people don’t alienate them beyond any chance of redemption and then demand that they change…for the sake of people who will hate them no matter how they look or behave.

    4. Beauty is objective, but an individual’s reaction to it is dependent on whether or not it is perceived to be socially convenient, and the beholder’s level of social investment. This will have a good deal to do with the beholder’s goals and their level of masculinity, and perhaps their status as well.

    5. Because of number 4, a beautiful woman with low social status surrounded by faggots who are overly socially invested will be viewed as meat. She will be a disposable piece of trash to them no matter how beautiful she is. So if it’s a choice between being either invisible or invisible, what kind of choice is that?

I have lived that since puberty. No, you don’t want the details.

    6. Feminists are able to easily manipulate men who are faggoty enough to let women decide what kind of women they should date. Note the consistent clinging to the myth of genetic propensity of people of African descent to obesity, when the real problem is the damned diet.

For everybody else it’s the diet, but for Black women it’s those inferior monkey genes right?

Feminsts say, “Some people are genetically fat.” Wannabe antisocials who can’t seem to break away say, “Black women are prone to obesity.”

Polly wanna fuckin’ cracker. (as in crispy, not White)

    7. I am not here to tell men how to think. I am here to encourage men to think.

    8. My opinions are my opinions, and they are not going to be the default opinions of feminists, or even egalitarians or of most fat women. I have no problem with nature. It has been very good to me even when I wasn’t very good to her. Now that we’re on the same page, I have even less tolerance for Polly than I did before, when I was fat and more accepting.

    Is everybody clear yet?

The thing about fat chicks is that (1) they provide opportunity for practice and (2) their pussies are more often than not quite tight. That’s about all that needs to be said about BBWs and chubsters.

    1. We don’t want to be your practice dummies. Go do your emotional necrophilia elsewhere.

    2. You must not be American. That tends to be true only in places where mildly fat women aren’t convinced that they’re hideous, and don’t put out as easily. In an area where the fat girls are just well cared for and well guarded, that is true. Less traffic makes for a better driving experience.

I wouldn’t count on it as a rule in the U.S. though…maybe not even in the U.K. Slut culture plus faggotty men who tolerate sluttery means ugly or just “ugly” women who aren’t family regulated, do the backwards thing and put out more to try to widen their net.

“Practice dummies”? You may not want to be–but you are. Get used to it.

My experience spans the globe, from thin to slim to average to fat chicks, in all colours, and as a rule most BBWs have really tight pussies. In my experience.

My assumption is that it is due to fat girls not getting much action. But then again, I’ve found the same to be true with a lot of skinny girls. Or, it could just be because I have a really big dick (see previous entry).

    Go eat your Twinkies.

BMI 21-23, for a woman, is not even “thin”. For some women, it’s ideal, but it’s definitely a medium build. I’m probably at the 75th-90th percentile among men when it comes to liking heavier women– I’m not a fat fetishist, but I like curves, muscle, and a little chub– and I’d say that the optimal weight for a 5’8 woman is probably 138 pounds. That’s a BMI of 21.

The difference between a curvy, beautiful, medium-built woman and a true fattie cannot be overstated. One looks like a sexy woman, while the other looks like an amoeba with a woman trying to fight her way out of it.

Carbs are what make people fat gig, so your plan will backfire hugely.

The more ‘low-fat’ food we eat as a nation and the more desperately we try to diet, the bigger we are blowing up. If you take fats out of your diet, there is no other option than to replace them with sugars/starches. 100 years ago Americans ate about 16 pounds per head of sugar per year. Now we eat over 160 pounds per year (except for me, I don’t eat any). The weight charts align perfectly with our national sugar consumption.

I get 60% or more of my daily calories from fat (mostly animal with a high level of saturated fat – butter, cream, meats and yes, I use lard – mm, lard) and I am thin as a pin.

All you fools should read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes.

Also, re: average age of menarche, it’s decreased in America by a grand total of 2-3 months since 1973. Less than 10% get their period before age 11, 90% get it by 13.75.

It’s total bullshit that the average age used to be 17yo last century. I don’t know who made it up, but I hear it all the time.

By country, worldwide, average age is always between 12 and just barely 14 years, and has been since there was available data.

There’s no real data for my pet theory: arb-rich diets seem to skew things a little earlier, which makes sense since the more carbs a population is eating the fatter they are, and lots of carbs also mess with your insulin and hormones. All data I have seen show that rural African populations, some of the last people in the world who are not eating grain-and-sugar-based diets, have the latest average ages (13.8-14.1 years).

Still, I don’t think it’s nearly as harmful to the body as massive amounts of sugar.

Nowhere in there or anywhere else on the site do I ever propose a low fat diet for anybody. What I also don’t do is treat carbs as “bad”. They just need to be eaten in reasonable portions and proportions.

What may be confusing Gig is use of the term “junk fat”.

A junk fat is a hydrogenated vegetable oil or emulsifier that isn’t a real food, and is therefore just gunking up your liver instead of getting used.

So Gig, please if you’re going to lie about me, pick something that isn’t posted in public already.

I don’t really understand the idea that healthy food is expensive. Compared to what? Especially in summer, fresh fruits and vegtables are cheap and plentiful, tofu and tempei are much less than meat, so are dried beans. The biggest hurdle I think, for most, is relearning cooking skills. That is exactly what jumpstarted my weight loss. I went from unsuccessfully trying to fight food craving, and hunger, to revamping my food supply and learning new ways to cook.

I’m not a complete vegatarian, but about 90%. I shop a lot at Asian food markets where beans, grains, noodles and herbs are much less expensive, especially in bulk. First I was leary, about quality, but when found a couple I knew well, both born in India, doctor and lawyer, shopped there, I had less misgiving than I do at the reg. grocery. Even natural food stores offer good deals in bulk when you get used to what to look for.
Where do you get your supplements? I’ve just found Swansons health foods and there Whole Food Vitamin and Mineral really works for me, unlike any other vitamin I’ve tried. It’s the first whole food I’ve tried, and only $7.99 for a months supply.

What I consider ‘healthy food’ is extremely expensive. Fresh organic produce, and quality meat, fish, and dairy products (preferably that which ate a biologcially appropriate diet when alive, not corn-and-soybean meal).

If you live on rice, beans, and tofu (I guess you consider that ‘healthy’ – I don’t), it’s plenty cheap.

The decision to simplify nutritional things into “plants vs. animals” is way too limiting. It skews interpretation of the research results. In the discussion above, no distinction is made between the various types of animal products. In the future, more sophisticated research will begin to give better answers. However, I want to offer some opinions that people can take advantage of right away. Start with a predominantly plant-based whole food diet like Dr. Fuhrman recommends, and add a small amount of clarified butter (ghee) to it. (If you can tolerate milk, consider adding a small amount of non-homogenized whole milk too.) See if you get the needed “boost” in energy or well-being that you think you are missing from not eating meat. I propose that it is not the meat or fish that you are missing from your diet. Take a look at the article on my site for more details.

I would like to hear from people who have earnestly tried healthy vegetarian diets like Dr. Fuhrman’s in the past without success. My own experience is that no amount of B-12 or DHA or other vitamin supplementation, no amount of dedication, and no amount of sticking to the best quality whole foods would make the pure vegetarian diet work well – especially for someone who is an athlete or active person. I have seen this hundreds of times in all types of people.

At this point, most people assume that animal protein (specicially meat or fish) is what they need to add to the diet. I want to propose that this is an untested and unproven assumption.

It could be just as likely that micronutrients found in animal fat (specifically butter or cream) are the missing ingredient. It may be instructional to look at old traditions that ate predominantly plant-based diets. The Ayurvedic tradition comes to mind. In this tradition, clarified butter is considered a very important supplement. It is even used as an ingredient in many Ayurvedic herbal supplements. Could it be present for reasons more than as a simple carrier?

Let me hear from you if a vegetarian diet has failed you in spite of your best intentions. How many of you automatically assumed you needed to add poultry, fish or other meat to your diet? If you are willing to try a mostly plant-based diet again, this time try adding ghee (clarified butter) and a bit of non-homogenized whole milk. I propose that you don’t need the animal protein, so don’t worry about using a lower fat milk – it’s more likely that nutrients in the animal fat are what you need a bit more of. I bet you will feel a lot better, and you will still have a diet that meets the guidelines derived from the China Study and the other good research.

Solution & not Advertising so nothing to lose just lost weight 😛
