Johannesburg likely is a lot like any American city with a huge population of really poor people.
BTW, I saw an interview with a black lady who rides the bus from Soweto to a white area to work as a maid. The new bus route and bus has been a major improvement in her life. Much, much better than having to walk.
The real question is this: Who benefits when these big international sport events come to town? I doubt it’s the taxpayers.
Now, I would love it if they sent the UN to Johannesburg.

I love that there has been an increase in how often there are police helicopters showing up for some circling over my area lately. The best was the other night when they were talking from the helicopter at the people on the ground.
Apparently, some people think that if they keep running, the helicopter and ground units will eventually either a.) get tired or run out of gas and have to leave or b.) they will suddenly develop the ability to camoflauge themselves to match their surroundings. Stealth criminals.

I am sure that the mayor of Johannesburg has not eaten anyone – unlike the mayors of some other major African cities.
However, when blacks take charge of stuff created by white people, it falls apart, Haiti being an early example, Detroit a more recent example. Just as Detroit has mostly been abandoned, Johannesburg is being abandoned.
The entire downtown area of Johannesburg, which used to be the central business district, is now a ruin occupied by feral humans, Barbecues made of old oil cans blaze in the marble foyers of what used to be the headquarters of banks and airlines. There are goats tethered in the hallways
Ponte City, a gigantic skyscraper with a magnificent view over all of Johannesburg, originally containing highly desirable offices, apartments, and a shopping center, intimately connected to a university, is now an abandoned slum, with a handful of low lifes hanging out in the ruins. Supposedly it is being redeveloped, but it has been being redeveloped for a long time. The black redevelopers cannot seem to get the lifts working properly. They are mostly redeveloping the ground floor.

I was still pretty young when apartheid ended, but I remember thinking that South Africa would go to crap. Why did I think this? I thought about majority black neighborhoods in my city and extrapolated. Was it racist? Yes. But I was right.

Come Back, Colonialism, All Is Forgiven
Le Blanc and I are into our 500th kilometer on the river when he turns my view of modern African history on its head. “We should just give it all back to the whites,” the riverboat captain says. “Even if you go 1,000 kilometers down this river, you won’t see a single sign of development. When the whites left, we didn’t just stay where we were. We went backwards.”
Le Blanc earns his keep sailing the tributaries of the Congo River. He’s 40 years old, and his real name is Malu-Ebonga Charles — he got his nickname, and his green eyes and dark honey skin, from a German grandfather who married a Congolese woman in what was then the Belgian Congo. If his unconventional genealogy gave him a unique view of the Congo’s colonial past, it is his job on the river, piloting three dugouts lashed together with twine and mounted with outboards, that has informed his opinion of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s present. “The river is the artery of Congo’s economy,” he says. “When the Belgians and the Portuguese were here, there were farms and plantations — cashews, peanuts, rubber, palm oil. There was industry and factories employing 3,000 people, 5,000 people. But since independence, no Congolese has succeeded. The plantations are abandoned.” Using a French expression literally translated as “on the ground,” he adds: “Everything is par terre.”
It’s true that our journey through 643 kilometers of rainforest to where the Maringa River joins the Congo at Mbandaka, has been an exploration of decline. An abandoned tugboat here; there, a beached paddle steamer stripped of its metal sides to a rusted skeleton; several abandoned palm oil factories, their roofs caved in, their walls disappearing into the engulfing forest, their giant storage tanks empty and rusted out. The palms now grow wild and untended on the riverbanks and in the villages we pass, the people dress in rags, hawk smoked blackfish and bushmeat, and besiege us with requests for salt or soap. There are no schools here, no clinics, no electricity, no roads. It can take a year for basic necessities ordered from the capital, Kinshasa, nearly 2,000 kilometers downstream, to make it here — if they make it at all. At one point we pass a cargo barge that has taken three months to travel the same distance we will cover in two days. We stop in the hope of buying some gasoline, but all we get from the vessel are rats.
Even amid the morbid decay, it comes as a shock to hear Le Blanc mourn colonialism. The venal, racist scramble by Europeans to possess Africa and exploit its resources found its fullest expression in the Congo. In the late 19th century, Belgium’s King Leopold made a personal fiefdom of the central African territory as large as all of Western Europe. From it, he extracted a fortune in ivory, rubber, coffee, cocoa, palm oil and minerals such as gold and diamonds. Unruly laborers working in conditions of de facto slavery had their hands chopped off; the cruelty of Belgian rule was premised on the idea that Congo and its peoples were a resource to be exploited as efficiently as possible. Leopold’s absentee brutality set the tone for those that followed him in ruling the Congo — successive Belgian governments and even the independent government of Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled from 1965 to 1997 and who, in a crowded field, still sets the standard for repression and corruption among African despots.
Le Blanc isn’t much concerned with that history; he lives in the present, in a country where education is a luxury and death is everywhere. Around 45,000 people die each month in the DRC as a result of the social collapse brought on by civil war, according to a study released in January by the International Rescue Committee. It estimated the total loss of life between 1998 and April 2007 at 5.4 million. For many Congolese like Le Blanc, the difficulties of today blot out the cruelties of the past. “On this river, all that you see — the buildings, the boats — only whites did that. After the whites left, the Congolese did not work. We did not know how to. For the past 50 years, we’ve just declined.” He pauses. “They took this country by force,” he says, with more than a touch of admiration. “If they came back, this time we’d give them the country for free.”

South Koreans and North Koreans are genetically as close as humans get. Yet if you take an average North Korean citizen/slave and put him in a free country such as South Korea, he has no idea what to do with himself. Despite his extreme genetic similarity to his South Korean brothers, he simply doesn’t understand the concept of getting up in the morning and making decisions for himself. And it’s likely that he’ll never get over it — he’ll actually pine for home and possibly break back IN to North Korea.
His crippling condition is not genetic — it’s a product of a lifetime spent without any personal notion of independence, let alone leadership. There can be little doubt that an isolated country populated and run entirely by former North Korean citizens/slaves would descend immediately into chaos and civil war. Yet South Korea is a thriving free country populated and run by a genetically identical people.

That makes no sense at all. North Korea is the exact opposite of chaotic. If anything, its people are TOO disciplined.
Is Zimbabwe working on a nuclear weapon? Could Congo build a 100-story skyscraper without foreign technical assistance? Could Senegal project enough strength to convince the world’s only superpower to keep 40,000 of its troops on its borders for 50 years just in case and yet never try to invade?
North Korea shows evidence of its people’s intelligence all the time. The reason why neither the north nor the south has tried to restart the Korean War is not pacifism, but a universally-understood parity of strengths. They’re about equal to each other in military strength.
I’ve never been to North Korea, but an American who had lived in China for many years had told me that he thought that a lot of Western reporting on North Korea was propaganda. North Korea is what’s called an ethnostate. It’s into Korean nationalism far more than S. Africa was ever into white nationalism. That’s a big taboo in the modern West, hence the hostility and the propaganda.

Dumping her was the right choice, but I think this guy totally overreacted with the public displays. First, all these threats and telling half the world is giving her attention and drama and making her a sympathetic figure to the sick people she probably socializes with.

Sort of a gotcha interview for this poor sap, but that doesn’t excuse the poor infrastructure. Countries are required to put lots of money into the supporting structure, at least for the Olympics. However, I think it might be best to wait and see if the World Cup logistics, crime etc. are actually bad or not. Everyone thought Athens in 2004 was going to be a disaster, and it wasn’t.

I’m a regular reader of your blog, from the small city (pop +1 200 000) of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, so it was pretty cool seeing a post about us. And yes, probably not a shining example of the type of publicity one would like to see about one’s country, but bearing much truth.
Port Elizabeth (PE), is one of the host cities of the 2010 World Cup, so I carry a mix of excitement and some uncertainty as to how this widely viewed event will turn out for us.
One of the benefits of hosting the World Cup has been, that although affected by the global recession, we have been relatively lucky in that the massive infrastructure spend for this event has slightly cushioned those effects. Billions have been spent on new stadiums, road infrastructure, airports and telecoms, but much remains to be done. Could the money spent have been put to better use – definitely. Many remain unemployed, living below the poverty line, many hospitals are in poor condition, and ever present corruption, nepotism and tender irregularities lead to massive discontent.
Post-World Cup, there will still be much infrastructure work to be done, as well as other projects because much of South Africa is in dire need of additional development in order to take it into the 21st century. Could this be when we really start to feel the effects of the recent global fallout? For me, a worrisome question, but will remain optimistic.
As for PE’s World Cup readiness, I know that it is unlikely that our newly constructed BRT transport system will be 100% operational, if at all… However, fans will get to the stadium – somehow… Whether by bus, cab, mini-bus taxi or the assistance of a friendly local. And when I say friendly, it’s generally the truth. Crime, I probably don’t even need to mention, but is a serious problem. A family member and friends have all been victims of hijackings, but all remain in this country because they believe they have a part to play in its future. Some may think naive – we just live here.
My advice to any tourists would be the same to anyone visiting a new place, be cautious. Every city has its dangers and it’s easier for a tourist to become a victim for obvious reasons. Find out as much as you can about where you’ll be going, carry only as much cash as you’ll need for transport, food and miscellaneous items and try not to advertise too much that you’re a tourist. Simply – have a plan.

Many top- and mid-level posts in government, government parastatals and utility companies, as well Corporates are filled by men and women who just don’t have the knowledge, experience or ability to do the jobs they’re called to do. In order to fast track Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), ‘previously-advantaged’ senior-level and skilled workers have largely been removed from their posts. Obviously leaving gaping holes and massive shortfalls where it comes to service-delivery and good governance and also presenting many opportunities for corruption.
The ANC-led government tends to follow the philosophy of cadre-deployment, meaning jobs-and-tenders-for-buddies or those well-connected to the struggle. Effective in ensuring the survival of a political organisation and rewarding those who were willing to give their all during the struggle-years, but hopeless in ensuring that even the most basic needs of the poorest of poor get met. Until top-level posts are filled on merit and ability, not much will change.
All in all, as I said before, I’ll remain optimistic about our future. Positive change is going to take many years, I probably won’t be around to see it, but I’ll certainly do my bit to try and make a difference…
Until proven otherwise, I believe we may surprise some critics come World Cup time…

All her worthwhile scientific work was done under his close personal supervision, and when that supervision ceased, so did any original scientific work by Marie Curie.

That New Yorker story should blow us away, but it doesn’t, since we all know how common it is.

I call BS on the oft-cited children excuse. One of the best gifts parents can give their kids is a mom and dad who love each other and have a functional relationship, sexually included. Part of that gift is showing kids that sometimes, somebody else besides the kid comes first. If the kid walks in on them, he’s getting a positive lesson in proper marital behavior.
Seriously, it should be not be seen as at all normal for married couples to not have regular sex. It’s like obesity, it should shock us to the core.

It’s primarily a result of American style feminism in three ways:
1) Feminism has largely intentionally feminized men (they call it suppressing male aggression and making men more equal partners) from many or most upper half households to grade school and on. Men are taught to be excessively deferential to their wives and girlfriends and to let her nearly always get her way. They’re also taught to follow women in relationships, or at the very least that that’s not incompatible with masculinity. This anti game does tend to kill her continuing sexual attraction to her husband. Game is an antidote to this but not the other two.
2) Women no longer feel they owe a duty as part of the marriage “deal” to their husbands to sex him with reasonable frequency, even when they themselves aren’t feeling a strong desire to do so. In fact they often feel quite the opposite – that it’s male oppressive and horribly old patriarchal old school for him to pressure her in any way, including by withholding things he does for her (as wives are taught by American entertainment media to do -withholding sex- to get their way). Note that often once women start, if they do still feel love for their husbands and he’s any good at sex, they often do get into it or even way into it.
3) The horrors of divorce theft 2.0 greatly diminishes the wife’s sense that she needs to keep her husband happy for her own economic well being, or that it’s very important she do. At least if her husband makes any bank. As well the high and even sometimes (though still rarely after a few years) higher earnings of women in marriage today also reduces this sense. Unlike him, she’s not going to have to pay for child support.

A similar viewpoint can be seen amongst east asian women of the first or second generation here in the US. The west coast, especially San Francisco and San Diego, is littered with Phillipina and Vietnamese women who throw themselves at successful white males, especially if in military uniform.
A parallel ca be drawn to the 1950s housewife, who saw both the Great Depression and the trying times of WW2. These women summarily rejected the past times where they worked outside the home and earned their keep in favor of being stay-at-home moms who supported stable white males.
All 3 groups: 1) knew real poverty; 2) worked to get out of it, and sought to; and 3) rejected working when they could instead serve a man who protected them and provide. They are all also famous for stricter morals than most women encountered today.
It is only their daughters and grand daughters—who never saw hardship and were spoiled—who seek/sought the exciting black male sex object.

I base my conclusions on the expressed comments on my exes, drunken female classmates, both undergrad and grad, female co-workers (when drunk), and social circle. Every woman, when drunk (enough) confessed her lustful desire for NBA players. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant were favorites, but Ron Artest came in for some drooling as well. These were all educated, upper class, women, most in the 6-9 range with one ten and one 9.9 or higher. This was over a number of years.
Fascinatingly, all these women married or were in LTR with White guys. All the women expressed uber-PC sentiments, including the worthless nature of White guys and White culture in general. Subscribing to the view that “White means boring and stupid and value-less.” None of the women have kids or had kids, that I know of. A good number have been divorced at least once (divorce rate about 50%). Those not divorced are split about 50% married once, never divorced, and serial monogamy.
When Roissy talks about urban women, he’s not exaggerating. AT ALL. These are all “nice” women. If you have a g/f who is moderately hot, and appear uninterested in them, they’ll be happy to be nice and friendly towards you. Not expecting anything, and often quite helpful. They contribute to charities, volunteer, are good at their jobs. Many are lawyers, accountants, teachers, psychologists, and so on. Totally respectable middle class women. That geographical factors strongly affected human cultural variation seems entirely reasonable. Indeed about all hereditarians (meaning it might be around 50/50 nature and nurture) have long thought that. Diamond simply elaborates geographical differences to much more than climate. What he implies or relies upon his readers preexisting supposition (it used to be conventional wisdom) is that these geographic or environmental differences facilitating cultural differences didn’t have time to feed back into genetic differences from the time the major geographic races separated, beginning some 60k years ago. Genetic scientists have know for some time now that that simply isn’t even remotely true.
Sure genetic mutations of the somewhat helpful for fitness or at least not harmful variety DO take a very long time to accumulate. However helpful or at least not harmful genetic variations are preserved in low frequencies in human populations genomes. So a ton of genetic variation is always available in a population, originating long ago. They get reshuffled through sexual reproduction and selected for by the natural and biological environment, including that created by other humans acting in part in a way molded by their cultures.
Cochran and Harpendig have shown in “The Last 10,000 Years” that human evolutionary changes over the last 10k years have been greater than over the preceding 40k years. (No doubt due to the rapid changes in effective environments that things like the discovery and then much further invention of agriculture brought about.) One example is that lactose tolerance, the ability to readily digest milk as a adult (iin many races and previously in history that disappeared not long after infancy) arose over the last 8k years probably in the cattle herding peoples of the western Eurasian steppe north of the Black and Caspian seas (perhaps among the Kurgans), and in fact arouse using different genetic mechanism and therefor independently, considerably later in other areas such as in the Sudan of central east Africa among the Nuer, Tutsis and others. This ability has great utility among herders of cow and other milk bearing animals (e.g. goats), in that it is a much more lifetime calorie producing use of cattle than just eating them, and so allows greater population density among herding peoples (who also tend to be quite martial). Something like 90% and higher of northern Europeans have this trait, while southern Europeans have it to a lesser extent. Indians have it in lesser percentages as well.
It’s perfectly possible that significant abstract or logical intelligence differences and differences in aggressiveness and introversion etc. developed over a few millennia as well. In fact it seems likely, in light of the huge increase in human populations (which facilitates the rapid fixation of advantageous genetic variations) after agriculture was discovered/invented and improved. They also posit that the higher IQ of Askenazi (only) Jews developed within a millenia in Europe in the Middle Ages, and produce intriguing genetic evidence that this could well be true. Medieval Jews usually had white collar work involving money lending, transnational trade and tax farming for Christian nobles in the middle ages, which rewarded higher IQ’s with more success and income. (E.g. Askenazi jews tend to develop certain mental illnesses that are much rarer among others when the homozygotic form of certain genes is present in the newborn. E.g. Gaucher’s disease. The heterozygotic children which is a much more common just have higher intelligence. Seems to improve the lipid insulation of nerve cells, allowing faster neural signal transmission and perhaps other things.
Much genetic differentiation between geographical races and even sub-races that were e.g. longer heavily agricultural and with some significant part of the population living in cities with stratified elites probably did occur over the last 10k years, when cultural variations were great, and indeed often over a few millennia – or even as little as one millennia in some cases. If so this would better help explain the finely divided differences we do in fact see as the product of genetic as well as cultural causation. As another example. there’s the much greater toleration of alcohol among some peoples than others, i.e. in general among peoples that were long agricultural and hence fermented alcohol.

This is of course grossly unfair and inefficient, especially when the assistance is making most of the decisions as well. Inevitably when the black incompetent (if that’s what he is) above him does weigh in with genuine decisions as opposed to just rubber stamping all the time, it’s gonna inevitably often go wrong. This will tend to accumulate over time. It’s only been since 1995 since apartheid was abolished and all discrimination real and measured by minimum quotas against blacks made illegal and S. Africa’s form of super affirmative action as here described instituted. I’d guess it wasn’t until around 2000 that the later started to permanent many executive positions below the very top. The same thing’s gone on in many larger private corps I understand.

Ha Ha. Funny interview. Another fairly regular blog reader from South Africa here. This a great blog. I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest this, but the blogger (Roissy/Citizen Renegade?) really should put all his insights re women, game and the immanent collapse of society together into a book. He’d make a killing. Provided it wasn’t so ridiculously un-PC that NO publisher or bookseller would touch it.
But back to the main topic. Just wanted to clarify two things from the article for any people who are interested:
A “taxi” in the context that the mayor was talking about doesn’t refer to a regular metered taxi you hail on the streets. The taxis he was referring to are sort of oversized minivans which are owned by assorted rival, often warring, private groups. They’re overcrowded, often involved in horrific accidents, and are quite a few steps down from a regular bus or subway as you would understand them. People use them because they get them where they need to go much faster than any formal public transport would. Actually, as bad as they are, they represent a triumph of cut-throat free enterprise.
The article is lifted from the South African Sunday Times, based in Joburg, not the UK paper, or another rag with the same name. So the reporter is himself a Joburg native.
Interested to learn that Bloomberg goes to work by public transport. That must be a nightmare for his security people. How are they supposed to protect him in a random subway car or bus day in and day out?
OK, just a question for the mostly American men on this blog. Are American girls really as bad as you all make them out to be? I’ve been to the US a few times, but only for short periods. Four months was the longest trip. From my limited experience they didn’t seem all that different to girls at home or in other countries I’ve been. Same issues, different hemisphere. Obviously my perspective may be different since I was only there a short time. Not like I was married or in a long-term relationship or anything. I didn’t even think the average woman was all that fat. Though I spent most of my time in NYC and Seattle. I’m told it’s different outside of the big cities. Or maybe I just don’t notice or register overweight women (the way woman don’t notice beta’s).
Keep up the good work. The world is not yet rid of beta’s/nice guy behaviour…. myself included.

A fair measure of how badly women behave is the proportion of fatherless children. If most children are fatherless (high illegitimacy and divorce rates), most women are badly behaved.
If most children fatherless, than most sex is leking sex rather than relationship sex, even though the girls are rationalizing that they are in a relationship. If a guy and a girl think they are in a relationship, but the girl’s actual behavior approximates leking, then the guy in the “relationship” is going to be badly mistreated.
So a guy’s risk of mistreatment in what he thinks is a relationship is pretty much proportional the fatherlessness rate.

Oh, yes. I didn’t mean that I thought Bloomberg would be mugged or anything like that. I “pity da fool” who would mug Bloomberg. He seams like a really ruthless guy. He’d have half the NYPD on a search and destroy mission after the mugger. I was more thinking about terrorists or other nutjobs. Apparently the new British Prime Minister, David Cameron, takes the tube to work, and there’s been an outcry in the British press that he’s being reckless.
I agree that NYC is very safe for a big city. Whatever they are doing to contain crime is obviously working (Well, street crime at least. Goldman Sachs etc. is another issue). Never had any problems there at all. Obviously I never went to the South Bronx and such areas, though I did walk around Harlem one day (I’m a white guy) since I had heard it was gentrifying rapidly and wanted to see it before Whole Foods Stores and yoga studio’s moved in en masse.

In my experience the loving Slavonic women are genuine. They expect a man to dominate them and will return it with good sex and good care. They are very romantic and low drama. You have to go DI on them every now and again or they won’t respect you.
My wife is fabulous and it has been that way from the very beginning and has actually become a better wife with experience. My wife watches my back, is a good conversationalist, is sexy as hell, highly intelligent and very affectionate. I get sex more than once every day. Guys that fail with these women just don’t know how to game them. I can honestly say marrying my wife has been the best decision I ever made.
