I’m hoping to start a new meme along the lines of Epic Beard Man. A photographer strolling the streets of downtown Vancouver during their riot after the loss to the Boston Bruins (Po’ Canada!) snapped a funny pic of an enraged Asian nerd wielding a hockey stick like a light saber.

Well, this isn’t something you typically see at riots. When the riot isn’t that dangerous to personal safety, the Asians and white hipsters come out to join in the fun. I bet this guy wouldn’t last until morning if he struck that pose during the Katrina riots.

I have nothing against creating memes, but your arrogance and condescension towards people who actually respect others’ feelings and property is astounding. How about if I worked my entire life to get enough money to start a business, and it’s on the brink of succeeding, and then someone smashes up all my windows so that I can’t pay next month’s rent? The Asian face with its shallow bone structure and delicate features tends to look parodical when contorted into extreme emotional expression. Parody/Comedy = ok. Drama = not so much.
That’s why, Bruce Lee, for example, can cross over: he has relatively deepset eyes and angular, as opposed to round, features. Asian women universally can’t act in the emotive-expressive sense; but in their stoicism or formality they can suggest complicated depths.
On the other hand, white and black guys look silly doing martial arts. There’s a golden ratio when it comes to height, BMI, speed and dexterity. Black guys = too long. White guys = too stubby and inflexible.
So, the guy in the picture looks ridiculous, agreed. Mainly for the dissonance between his projected “rage” face and his girly frame. That dissonance is amplified not only the cultural assumptions about Asianness, but by a biologically-felt incongruity. Asians are meant to be more contemplative (except for Mongols); the face is not meant to convey extremes of emotion. Spock looks Asian. Also girls look stupid when they spew venom.

“rioting because your team lost: gay”…..imo it’s incorrect to assume that this riot occurred because the team lost…it would have begun regardless of the outcome of the game….you don’t bring a backpack full of Molotov cocktails or other incendiary devices into the downtown core unless you are planning to create mayhem….and there was a number of guys that did just that….but still, the streets were relatively safe as the author of this piece pointed out…and when I look at the pictures I get the feeling more of a high school party out of control then a full fledged riot….having said that….those who perpetrated crimes are going be held to account….that’s a given.
