(He’s far from huge, but he’s done enough to prevent looking like the typical doughy nerd with a Cheetos moustache.) Listen as he trash talks the competition; this guy is a cocky asshole.
And finally, watch how he reacts when his girlfriend bounds next to him; no beta supplicating there. He stands firm and lets her nuzzle into his personal space. She is the one with exaggerated body motions, while he remains the oak tree under which she frolics like the nymphette she is.
Often, you can identify the alpha male better by watching how the women in his company react to him than by his accomplishments or his leadership skills.

I disagree, I’d say he’s alpha. Yes, it is a game made by betas, GENERALLY for betas, but that’s it. I mean, I have cute girls and I play Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls and stuff. Definitely nerdy. Although I don’t play often and don’t really talk about it to a woman at all unless she’s at least in a relationship and has been around my Xbox, I like it. Social status is all relative. If a girl hangs out entirely with gamer nerds she’s going to try to date the most alpha gamer nerd.
I think there’s an equalizing affect in large cities because women are exposed to all sorts of different spheres. You don’t get the cute girl dating the gamer nerd quite as much because she’s being hit on by lawyers, artists, and generally just more exciting people. Ultimately, the nerdier things don’t hold up excitement-wise in comparison (perhaps because they’re just socially defined as low-value behaviors).
In smaller towns, though, you see this more. In my town I see a lot of guys with girls out of their league, because they’re an alpha in their circle. And their circle is a lot more isolated from the outside world. The activities that are seen as traditionally low value, like gaming, aren’t low value everywhere.

This guy is basically playing Starcraft at a level similar to the level that pro football players play football.
To be as good as this guy is takes mindful training/practice (not just playing the game a lot). He has trained at becoming better at putting himself “in the zone” – Just like a professional athlete.
Mindful training translates very well into becoming more present (or in the zone) in everyday life… Being present = being Alpha.
Until recently guys who have the ambition/focus to do this kind of training (its monotonous and difficult) are the kind of guys who want to be successful at life in general and therefore would shy away from gaming enough to play at a high level since until very recently there was no mainstream reward for playing at a high level.
Guys like this guy used to become athletes, or succeed in business, or become politicians (successful politicking is a practiced skill). Now there is a mainstream reward for gaming success, it will become increasingly common for ambitious “alpha” men to go into gaming for the mainstream rewards.

Not necessarily. A lot of those guys have no game whatsoever beyond “i play xxx.” Pro basketball players are notorious for being beta chumps when it comes to dealing with women. Look at how many of them get taken for half their dough by gold diggers. It’s so bad among pro athletes that the NFL gives players classes about it. And some of the women those guys pull (the ones who aren’t stars) aren’t all that hot. This is just another example that attraction is all about opposites. This guy, acting stoic and unmovable gets a stupid, bouncy, bubble gum blowing girly girl. But he’s not particularly charming or witty, his social skills beyond acting stoic and reserved are not particularly impressive, and he’s just not likeable. Compare this guy to Arnold in his prime who was much more interesting and charming and probably got more intelligent girls, even given his main features of being a famous freak with a perfect body, because he was more intelligent and more sociable. Compared to the charm of someone like Schwarzenegger this guy is autistic.

I tend to believe the cause and effect of alpha behavior runs both ways. The girl clearly started as a StarCraft groupie, which is obviously the point of your post questioning exemption from the maxim. Her groupie-ness gave him an edge, since he’s a star player. I’d bet that after she sucked his cock the first time his body language became a lot more alpha than before. The question is whether he’ll be able to maintain that alpha frame after she leaves him. I can remember in high school seeing several guys go from: fucking hot chick for first time in their life -> transforming into a cocky asshole -> getting dumped by same chick -> transforming into loathsome pathetic pussy. And I’ve seen that cycle play out most dramatically in groupie situations: girls who fucked guys because they were athletes, but then moved onto to the next athlete; girls who fucked guys because they were in bands but then ended up fucking the rest of the band, etc.

Well, the insult was disguised pretty well then, to the point of non-detection. It was delivered by the pussy interviewer about as well as you might expect a pussy to deliver it. To respond would be to call attention to it, which would dignify and validate his pathetic move as rising to the level of a man’s notice. I hardly noticed it myself. Why? Because in the context of the couple’s mutually reinforcing body language, the spoken idea refuted itself and exposed the twerp to be the overeager beaver he is.
He’s the damn interviewer with the mic, he should have been in control of the tone of that whole scene. Instead he’s so out of his comfort zone when tasked with the responsibility of control that he is reduced to cracking weak jokes that few people detect much less understand.

I’ll admit I watched with the sound off and only clicked forward to see what his girlfriend looks like. I’d totally hit that. I think gaming has in some way become less ‘geeky’ amongst the younger generation. One girl that I sleep with on occasion is 24 and routinely tells me she’s playing video games. This girl is very attractive, though a total nerd when it comes to things like school and video games. Still, I don’t think that she nor her peer group consider it geeky. Perhaps that’s just because she’s an attractive girl trying to break the whole gamer-geek paradigm. Still, it seems pretty geeky to me to spend all your time playing video games, but I can’t really judge…I spent many an hour playing things like Pitfall, Missile Command, Zelda, Metroid and the like. Of course I was younger than this guy when I did that so perhaps I can judge somewhat. I think that should sufficiently age me. And I’d be willing to bet that Dorset may be right about this guy’s behavior with and sans attractive girlfriend, but I could be wrong.

I remember a debate Thursday had a while back about whether status could be considered universal or whether it only had meaning within the context of individual niches. Seems this would be evidence for the individual niche argument. Because this girl is a StarCraft player herself the reality of the StarCraft universe, whatever the fuck that is, takes on a heightened reality. If she sees him blow up spaceships, or whatever they do on StarCraft, she probably gets wet the way another woman might seeing a guy shoot a gun or kick someone’s ass. So a non-StarCraft gamer, however alpha, would have a harder time proving his alpha-ness to her simply because she hasn’t seen him blow shit up, or whatever it is they do on StarCraft.

If he does indeed have some alpha traits, he is probably over trying to counter little quips by the admiring and petty betas that no doubt surround him. It’s like a guy who is obviously in good shape, and gets endless comments about it. “Trying to compensate for something?”, it gets to the point where saying nothing is saying more, and a stare in the eyes is enough to quell the commenter and put them in their place.
I think right off the bat he was annoyed by the stammering and the general peacocking nature of the asian interviewer.
I mean really, the biggest accomplishment is him keeping his cool in what was obviously a joke interview that he was obligated to complete.

Starcraft differs from chess in that you can only partially see what the other guy is doing. Idra explains that he pursued a strategy that assumed his opponent would do the expected, and his opponent did the unexpected.
As in poker, the good player wins more often. He does not win every time.

Another thought: a lot of alpha/beta behavior is learned when men compete. A guy learns his *place* by his ranking among other men, hence boys like to beat the shit out of each other on the playground. Young males who are bullied more will exhibit more beta qualities since many beta qualities: excessive smiling, bad posture are physical acts of supplication to other men. (They basically say: I’m no threat to you, don’t beat me up.) They are a turn off to women because among other things women recognize that these traits evince a history of low status among other males.
Of course this blog distinguishes between being alpha with men vs. alpha with women — yet no doubt there is a high correlation between the two even if it isn’t the exact same thing.
So as social niches splinter ever more due to the intertubes, a guy like this who would likely learn more beta habits if he spent more time among alpha males, is instead picking up dominant alpha habits because he spends so much time dominating the dweebs within his niche. Conclusion: it’s better to be king of the dorks than a dork among cool people. Of course that only holds if there’s at least a few girls around to watch.

At a lot of these gaming tournaments and promotional events, the financial sponors hire VERY attractive girls to do interviews and also model at the various exhibits. I bet she’s dating him so she can noticed and land herself a modeling/reporter job. The evidence…..
1.) She eagerly runs to the stage and spends a lot of time exhibiting herself for the camera in this interview, but isn’t that enthused about him. Her exhibitionism is blatant to the point where it’s comedic. She has the same flirty/girly body language in other online interviews, including one without her boyfriend present.
2.) In the interview, she talks about how she never got much into gaming, but later she says that she initiated the messaging with him after watching his gaming interviews online. Doesn’t make much sense to be bonding with a anonymous foreign guy over gaming if you don’t even like gaming. Unless you want to get on stage and be famous.
3.) I don’t think there’s anything “alpha” about this guy that attracted the girl. I’ve met a lot of nerds/geeks with similar body language. The way he acts is more socially akward than anything and isn’t especially similar to what you’d see in athlete on ESPN. There’s an interview on Youtube in which the interviewer asks the girl if she gets jealous when female groupies come by. Her reply is NO, because his his fans are males. So I doubt that he’s especially popular with the ladies. His body build and voice are pretty geeky too.

A real alpha wouldn’t give credit to his girlfriend or get her to do interviews for him. For Mr. Alpha, it’s always about him and only him. The girl is just an object orbiting the center of the universe. In the NFL and other sports drafts, most of the athletes don’t even bring their girlfriends, unless it’s really serious. They bring family and close friends.
I do give this guy credit for banging a girl of her attractiveness, but let’s not overstate the case. He’s pretty much a omega gaming geek, but he happens to be at the top of the gaming ladder. So he’s famous and has attracted a hanger on looking for her 5 minutes of fame, and maybe a steady cash stream afterward. Sports, acting, and music attract their share of fame grubbing groupies. Why so much surprise to see ONE attractive groupie going after a very famous gamer?

Gaming isn’t the NFL, but the gaming industry spends a lot of money organizing a lot of highly publicized and televised promotional events. It’s not as fringe as you think and there are plenty of hot girls that get hired to do work at these events. An attractive chick that’s in the spolight could get hired to become a reporter or model, which would definitely further her career.
She’s not flirty with him or at all into him. At the end, she also make sure to show off her boobs to the camera. Flirtiness with the camera, but not your BF, is a sign she’s here for the fame.

That’s not true. Starcraft II events, for instance, are mostly organized by fans and organizations that grew from that fandom.
Starcraft II also holds the distinction of being one of the few videogames that is actually fun to spectate which is why people who are awesome in it become somewhat famous in the gaming community.

Question: when politicians and other men of seemingly “Alpha” status act “needy” during interviews, almost to the point of supplication, is that beta?
In this interview between Mystery and O Brian, Mystery is clearly getting tooled and his forced laughter doesn’t seem to be doing much. Although O Brian comes off as a herb too, Mystery’s demeanor clearly isn’t very “stoic.” I’ve seen several interviews and debates with politicians where in an attempt to seem friendly or charismatic, they come off as trying too hard.

He was in the US. He played in Korea late in his Starcraft 1 career and early in his Starcraft 2 career but has since moved back to the States. There’s only one big Starcraft 2 competition in Korea which is super cuttroat so he probably made to move for the greater tournament variety and easier competition.

A while back I worked ComiCon, passing out flyers. Pretty quickly I gathered there are *lots* of cute girls that flip for comics, video games and anime. They’re into skimpy clothes, porn and cosplay. My disinterest and lack of familiarity with all that was a stumbling block in the pickup, my game had to be on point to overcome the lack of bonding over something so important to them.
Certainly, there is no categorical exclusion for nerdy pursuits. Like any other arena, tight game (or just good social skills) works. The gamer may not have great success at your average bar, with your average ho, but that’s just a venue selection issue. There are plenty hot girls who are not only OK with but enthusiastically embrace nerds and their pursuits. “I love nerds and geeks!! *squeal*”

the term ‘alpha’ has two different connotations – alpha among men, and alpha among women. but the meanings are often conflated because there are many alphas among men who are also alphas among women.
when i said ‘women are the ones who determine alphaness’, i meant alpha in the second sense…i.e. men that women (hot women, especially) universally want to bang.

American industrial products aren’t competitive internationally. As a result, America is bleeding manufacturing capacity and inevitably losing its engineering skills. (The captive military market mitigates that somewhat, however.) For some reason, rich and technologically advanced countries like Japan and Korea aren’t in the same kind of trouble. Why is that? Playing starcraft is pretty nerdy but playing starcraft and being a nerd aren’t mutually exclusive. Two examples being Tasteless and Boxer.
Tasteless is pretty alpha, has an alpha voice, swears like a sailor. His brother is more of a nerd, but pretty intelligent(most famous for his analysis of starcraft, and is pursuing a PhD at Caltech) and also an ex player.
Boxer is older now, but he’s confident and married to a Korean celebrity.
The scene in general, is beta as fuck though.

I think you are right, Rock Granite. The body language is really funny between both of them. They hardly even look at each other or try to touch. The story behind how they met also doesn’t make much sense.
All the twittering and interviewing this girl has done makes it MORE likely that their relationship is fake. Nobody puts up hundreds of tweets on Idra’s gaming unless there’s she’s getting paid.
My guess is that she pretends to be his girlfriend, she in return gets lots of publicity and some financial benefits. Paying a girl to be your public escort isn’t a new practice.

Really. Why? Because I was also playing Starcraft1 at the time when Idra was starting to get good and known. Everyone in the scene knew his ultra bad manners and he really was THE Stereotype of an angry, ugly nerd. Everyone also said that he will never ever get a girlfriend etc. but now, 4-5 years later things are apparently all different. I’m sure he wouldn’t have that hot chick on his side if he wasn’t the best of the best at the game (in america that is, he is still low of the low in korean standards).
He has also buffed up a bit as it seems which I think definitely has helped him. You should’ve seen his post, talk, manners or temper at 2006-2007 🙂 SuperBeta, or maybe even an omega.
