Why Women’s Sports Get Less Primetime Coverage

August 7, 2012 by CH

The sports in which women compete that aren’t silly and that are actually fun to watch suffer from the problem of going head-to-head with a much better viewing alternative: namely, the men’s versions of those sports. Because, let’s just cut to the chase, at the elite level of sports (and, really, at all levels of sport except pee-wee), men are, on average, simply faster and stronger than women. Why the hell would anyone of sound mind want to watch a gimped version of his favorite sport when a more electrifying version already exists? This elementary logic escapes the feminist hivemind.

Furthermore, many of the sports in which women compete and men don’t, and which are tailored to women’s particular strengths, are unwatchable by dint of being retarded. See: synchronized swimming. There are only a handful of female-oriented “””sports””” that women compete in at a pro or semi-pro level which garner fairly large, if transient, audiences on par with the audiences that men’s sports regularly achieve. Figure skating is one example (and that mostly because women like the fact it is set to music and colorful, bedazzled costumes are worn).

Really, the only reason men choose to watch women’s sports at all is for prurient reasons, such as the exciting but rare glimpse of a wardrobe malfunction, or the slo-mo replay of pertly bottomed volleyball players diving into the sand. Otherwise, men will pass up women’s sports as long as a men’s sport is on another channel. The dirty little secret is that, among the subset of women who legitimately like watching sports, most of them will also prefer to watch the male versions of their favorite events.

I’m not anti-female athletics. Women should compete in sports, especially femininity-sharpening individual sports rather than competition-emphasizing team sports, primarily to sculpt their figures into beautiful, sexy visages that will help attract the attention of alpha males. Stay focused, ladies.

I was just going to bring tennis up. Due to equipment improvements, the men’s game (particularly Wimbledon) has gotten too serve heavy to be all that exciting. The women’s game, as played, is much closer to that which men played in tennis’ heyday of Borg and McEnroe.

There has to be other examples, as well.

And for utterly spectator unfriendly sports like swimming, who cares if the unidentifiable blob moving through the water in lane five, does so a second or so faster or slower than the ones in the opposite sex heat earlier in the day.

Extreme distance endurance running are interesting, in that men’s advantage in muscle mass seem to diminish over really long distances. Whether that is simply due to the most competitive men having better things to do than run triple Marathons, or because (emaciated) women are more efficient at lower power outputs, we’ll probably never know.

Men have more than an advantage in muscle mass. I think % wise the sex difference between marathons and ultras is very similar

Eh, I would have agreed with you 10 years ago and you do have a point. Serves are still heavily favored, but this is a great time in Men’s Tennis. Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer are all primarily baseline players and each have their own style. There have been some truly epic matches, such as the final in this year’s Australian open.

i agree that men’s matches are better for competition, but what i like about watching women’s tennis, aside from religiously following sharapove and ivanovic, is that i learn more that translates into my own game since the speed and shot ability is more similar to my advanced club playing level. you dont learn anything watching nadal vs djokovic because you cant do anything close to what they do, nor do you learn anything from a big server like roddick or isner. serena is the exception, she hits like a man and i hate to watch her play

The white sprinters look too lean. The black ones look the best to me. In hot climates women tend to camel hump their fat which is why fat black women look hideous to me. They also tend not to hour glass at all which seems to be a non nomadic adaptation. I tend not to even think about black women but the athletic ones look pretty good to me, and as I think more what nature had in mind. Some of the six pack white girls just look like a year of potato blight.

You missed the real reason female sports are uninteresting – being good at a sport offers little reproductive advantage to the woman or to the man considering boning her.

A very “fit” woman is usually infertile – it takes body fat for the female to be ready to breed – an internal store of food.

No, give me a zaftig woman eating bon-bons and reading a romance novel – that’s a satisfying lay.

Men’s sports are all about relative reproductive fitness (except maybe curling.) Men want to know the competition and act that them; women want to see the winners.

Funny story: Having played soccer in Canada at the AAA level during my youth, I’ve had the opportunity to play in a number of scrimmages against some relatively high profile teams.

On our U16 team, we played in a scrimmage vs the U18 Women’s National team, which was probably of comparable ability to the team currently at the Olympics.

Well anyway, long story short, we went up 7-0. At halftime.

After the break, and were all played out of position, asked to play two-touch football only and to generally “take it easy”.

    The game still ended 11-0.

And it’s not even purely a matter of size/strength. Everything they do is at a lower level, much lower. They’re slower, their control is dodgy, they’re not as coordinated, they’re not as smart, their vision is poor, their ability overall is lacking.

Even if we assumed that men has the same size/strength, the men would still annihilate them by virtue of sheer talent alone.

There was story going around back when the US Women’s National team was in prep for the world cup here in the USA (the Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy Brandy Chastain team). At the Nike Cup in Florida, which occurs in December, Tony Dicicco arranged for them to play the male U18 Boston Breakers team in a closed door scrimmage. The scuttlebutt was that not only were the girls beaten by double digit goals, but that for long stretches of the game they never touched the ball. In other words, a club team of men (18 year olds are virtually men) some of whom were probably only good enough to play Division II or lower level Division 1 soccer, waxed one of the greatest female teams ever to play.

Women’s soccer is a joke, and everyone who follows the game seriously knows it.

Call me a homo, but I like ballet. modern dance, figure skating, and synchronized swimming. I think all of these combine art and athletics in an often beautiful way and the level of skill reached is often amazing. But I also tend to think of these as theater rather than sports.

I like those things too (haven’t seen much of synchronized swimming though-the moving water fountain thing is neat, I don’t get why they have their hand on each other’s faces?) and agree its more art than sport. I saw some old footage of a gold medal gymnast during the Nixon administration. She did not look like a mini-hulk and there was much more of the element of dance in her floor routine. I have noticed the same thing with ice-skating. Its become so athletic that there’s no art/interpretation of the music its just rushing around the rink jump here, spin there, jump again, etc.

This post nails it. Why watch the “fastest woman in the world”, when you can watch the fastest/strongest/whatever person bar none? And that person will always be a dude.

It’s worth pointed to gymnastics as a possible exception to this. Gymnastics has been a unisex sport going all the way back to ancient Sparta. Women & men gymnasts are all superb physical specimens. It’s a fact that elite women gymnasts are pound-for-pound stronger than most men.

The thing I don’t like about women gymnasts is that the intense regimen can stunt their growth and more than a few of them have really boxy, boyish bodies.

Can’t knock the drive and talent, though. It’s one of the few sports where the caliber of male/female performance is roughly equally.

I think you’ve gotta be careful on the ‘sports makes women hot’ thing. Some of the sports, the girls remain hot (e.g. gymnastics, diving, etc), others they just end up with broad shoulders, no breasts and more masculine features, and invariably the sort that are drawn to sports are masculine enough that it wouldn’t be worth caring about it having that effect on them.

My dad (a retired professor in his early 70s, an interesting study in how a relatively well-mannered gentleman in a tweed jacket or cardigan could be really alpha a generation or two before mine) is fond of saying that women’s sports should be moved to the paralympics. That’s a pretty good tingle inducer.

In fact, I’ve been thinking about “gentleman game” of late. I believe the trick is to go through the motions in a way that is (slightly) patronising, allowing you to use olf-fashioned manners to channel old-fashioned societal roles. Of course, some chicks are just too stupid to catch on to this. Has served as a decent filter, if you’re not into those.

“Women should compete in sports, especially femininity-sharpening individual sports rather than competition-emphasizing team sports, primarily to sculpt their figures into beautiful, sexy visages that will help attract the attention of alpha males. Stay focused, ladies.”

I had just drank some water when I read this, and choked and spat it out laughing. Hilarious as always Heartiste.

There also is the issue of equal pay for equal work. Here’s one example.

There are four Grand Slam tennis tournaments: Australian Open, U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Women play best of three sets. Men play best of five sets.

For many years women were paid less and complained about it. They wanted the same prize money as men. Did they want to play five sets like the men? No. Three sets.

    All the tournaments caved.

In 2007, Wimbledon became the last Grand Slam tournament to give equal prize money to the men’s and women’s singles champions. The French Open introduced it a year earlier, copying the U.S. Open and Australian Open who have had it for years.

You are playing by feminist rules using a time theory of value. Even if women played twice as long, do they bring in the same amount of revenue?

More status confusion over what makes a woman valuable in the sports world. Kournikova made this famous because she demonstrates this perfectly being good enough tennis player to be in the elite company, but only good enough to lose to them. That is no big deal because it happens all the time. Lessor women lose. But when she is hot this always happens. My god do they hate this and I just love it.

    http://blisstree.com/live/lolo-jones-new-york-times-jere-longman-sexist-sports-coverage-282/

Looks like Lolo has hit the the same rut. She did not meddle and she is hot (enough). She runs with the sport elites, but cannot catch them.

They also mention Ryan Lochte who does not have this problem. No man does because a 10th place finisher among men can never be a sex symbol. Some girl here an there may take notice, but he will never become a sex symbol. Only the dominant man in his craft can be that kind of sex symbol and thus can never be a 10th place “hottie”.

Do these people still think posters of the next Billie Jean King are going to be on the inside of a boy’s locker?

The fact that Anna never won any major tournaments probably added to her appeal. Lolo Jones would be smart to shrug off the criticism the same way Anna did.

Female sports, for the most part, truly is all about the slo-mo replay for the dude. There’s been some great wedgies/cameltoes in beach volleyball, gymnastics, synchro swimming, water polo (all though they are fairly beastly on average), track, and the greatest of all female sports for viewing: tennis. Tennis is the best because there’s actually dramatic tension and shotmaking combined with booty shorts and sweaty crotch shots.

That said, all sports are only as exciting as the drama they can produce. Great shots or misses at critical times combined with athleticism, skill, and determination. They’re are plenty of sports, male or female, which inherently suck balls or make good viewing.

I’ll admit it. I’ve had a few olympic beat offs while watching pvr. Is it wrong to have watched woman’s gymnastics at 1/4 speed? I know they’re mostly around 16. Those asses though.

It’s not wrong. Women are fully physically mature at the age of 16. That’s why historically they were married off in most world cultures by this age.

If you’re a man and you don’t find attractive 16 year old females desirable to some degree, you are either abnormal or lying. End of. It doesn’t matter if you’re a father of five daughters, spare me the lies.

“This elementary logic escapes the feminist hivemind.”

or asking themselves how exactly it is end of men when it’s women who are copying men without shame? (hey you won a gold!!)

The top-rated comment in that dailymail article Gouverneur Morris posted which is about criticism of a Turkish columnist who wrote about how olympics is destroying womanhood:

“The Olympic women athletes have the right bodies and the right clothing for their sport – there’s nothing masculine about them.”

    *facepalm*

The final account by a woman competing in Olympics is also interesting:

“Team GB’s Zoe Smith, 18, faced abuse about her appearance before the Games began.

She was the subject of vile internet abuse after appearing on a documentary earlier this year, with anonymous Twitter trolls telling her she looks like a ‘lesbian’ and a ‘bloke’.

The 18-year-old Londoner smashed a British record by lifting twice her body weight during the 58kg Weightlifting event at London 2012.

And she took the opportunity to slam the online bullies that have tried to sour her Olympic campaign.

She wrote: ‘Most of the people that do think like this seem to be chauvinistic, pig-headed blokes who feel emasculated by the fact that we are stronger than them. Simple as that.’ [and it helps me sleep at night]

She added that it was particularly ‘sad’ to see abuse from girls who labelled her ‘weird’ for her muscular physique.

‘You’d think that young women around the same age as us would commend us,’ she added.

    for what exactly?

    Hello,

How about Nadia Comaneci in the Montreal 1976 games getting a perfect 10. Actually she got seven of them. One on the balance beam which is insane.

“Ladies and gentleman, for the first time in Olympic history, Nadia Comaneci has received the score of a perfect ten,”

“Times magazine posted huge photo of Nadia in front cover page, “She’s Perfect!” with a very small photo of the the first photo of Mars… 14 years old Nadia Comaneci became the only person shown in the cover page of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated magainzes at the same time.”

I believe women play sports for the same reasons men play sports that is personal satisfaction and the thrill of competing and winning with a team. I think there is room for all. Women’s sports viewing is picking up as women have been more encouraged to play.

Personally, I am huge NFL fan, but am getting my head around women playing contact football. They knock each other’s blocks off just like the men.
