Why So Many Vegetarians Are Dumpy

October 9, 2012 by CH

I’m not surprised by how many out-of-shape vegetarians waddle among us. Since most vegetarians are women, this means I’m not surprised by how many self-declared vegetarian women are dumpy. The media-pushed image of the slender vegetarian woman is far from the reailty.

Is it because fat women are more likely to adopt vegetarianism to lose weight? No. Fat women are more likely to continue eating whatever is put in front of them. The real reason so many self-righteous and putatively health-conscious vegetarian women are chubby is because they substitute their hated meat with a much worse food-based product: sugar.

You may as well call vegetarians “sugartarians”, or “pastatarians”. Spend any amount of time eating with a vegetarian and you’ll see that they don’t actually eat all that many vegetables. What they eat in place of meat is a lot of pasta, chips, noodles, rice, beans, cereal (oh lord, do they eat a lot of cereal), bread and pretzels. In other words, they have replaced an under-appreciated fat and protein source with an inordinate amount of simple, high glycemic carbs. Result: bloat.

Vegetarians should get off their high horses and realize that the pasta they shovel down their gullets is worse for their health and looks than the T-bone steak they claim is the root of evil and the gender pay gap. A healthy meat-eater like a paleo dieter probably eats more real veggies than a zealous vegetarian. And they look better, too. That suggests one tactic for moving the lemming sex away from a stupid status whoring trend: impress upon women how their sanctimonious diet is ruining their looks. They’ll stampede for the exits.

I somewhat agree and certainly made the same observations as presented above. BUT as a 10 year vegetarian, I feel obliged to be counted as such. 6ft 1″ 240lbs, decent health etc… It CAN be done, just as you say most people stop ‘eating meat’ but start eating sugars and refined carbs. Puffy, pale, bloaty, cranky….sounds familiar right? Menopause in dietary form lol

I would suggest further research on the BMI fallacy, dude. It applies as a rule of thumb, not an absolute prescription. I just happen to be moderately well muscled. 240lbs is 106kg give or take which is fine for 1.85m of body length. There’s a guy at hockey training who’s 5ft 11″ and weighs about 112kg, and he’s as fit and mobile as anyone else on the team.

NB: I train for strength and vigour, not cut abs or low body fat…horses for courses.

A chick who eats paleo knows how to cook too. That’s baseline for relationship material.

Vegetarianism is like Yoga, in that women who are attractive anyway (and therefore the most fad-sensitive) self-select towards it, and less attractive women follow. The difference is vegetarianism lacks the peer pressure necessary to drum out the fatties. The result is a more, um, “robust” slice of the female gender.

The problem is, yoga is almost always a healthy option for women, fat or thin. The ugly followers benefit as much as their more attractive trend-setting counterparts. On the other hand, if pursued by the wrong person (ie. someone with a poor metabolism or a propensity for binge eating), vegetarianism can be disastrous.

I’ve noticed a lot of chicks who do specialized diets also tend to show signs of having eating disorders. I know a girl who is allergic to many kinds of fruit and vegetables, but is now a gluten-free vegan. She can barely eat anything now, and if she happens to eat the wrong food she could end up in the hospital due to an allergic reaction. She’s stick-thin, really pale, and has been very ill the past year or so (Including bone and joint problems I’ve only heard of senior citizens getting). Of course if she ate a cheeseburger she’d probably feel a lot better, but it’s more important to her to be thin and a walking petri dish than to have her health.

I have to admit I have never seen any fat vegetarian women. I have seen many very skinny ones. I showed a picture of one to a woman I know and she said, “Protein deficiency.” I didn’t realize that until she pointed it out to me, and when she did, it was obvious the woman suffered from long-term protein deficiency.

Significantly, she finally found a guy when in her 40s, and suddenly started eating meat and put on weight.

It reminded me of “The Road to Wellvillle,” in which the author suggested people obsessed with “pure” eating have relationship, emotional and sexual problems.

I live in one of the ‘alternative’ capitals of the US, veggies everywhere. Most of ’em look like they’re in the final stages of flesh-eating disease. Many of them Lez or just batshit nuts. Or both.
Reasons: Incomplete protein, not enough food. They shop at the health food stores – of course, everyone else is ‘evil’ – but can’t afford full meals because everything in health food stores costs triple.
I’m about the most animal-friendly person you will ever meet, but fact remains that humans were designed as omnivores.
Paleo Man (and Woman) got game (meat) prolly ’bout 2-3 times a month, and made it last for several days, then it was back to nuts, fruit, grains and roots.

And why do people look so much healthier when they have meat in their diet? And why do we have canine teeth, which are used for chewing up meat?

Two cents worth: Quite a few of my fellow yogis are vegetarians. We work off the bloat with intensity of practice. Over time we start eating less because we ain’t as hungry as we used to be. Some of us go back to eating meat because our bodies start looking sickly thin. Bikram of Bikram yoga fame eats only meat. He is in his mid-60s and looks not a day older than mid-40s. His followers on the other hand … are mere followers.

I am a yoga practitioner and also a vegetarian. Most people who practice seriously eventually adopt a more or less sattvic diet for either religious or health purposes. They are almost never fat.

The secret of maintaining a lean physique, whether paleo, vegetarian or somewhere in between, is to consume lots of healthy proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and to avoid overeating and eating processed “fake” foods. It’s that simple. Everything else is just fad.

Damn straight. Many vegetarian chicks are fat. Especially the “raw vegan/fruitatarian” west coast chicks, who almost always have a muffin top rolling over their Lululemon yoga pants. Even the ones that look decent with clothing on are often “skinny-fat,” with no muscle mass, and have saggy skin & tits, and a droopy ass once you get them naked. Made that mistake a few times.

Most vegetarian chicks who eat a lot of carbs also smell bad, in that vaginal yeasty sort of way. Too many carbs feed that yeast. I can’t take the proseletyzing and attempts to lay a guilt trip, so I do not pass go when I find out a chick is vegetarian, or if I do, I put even less effort into it than usual.

The paleo chix are by far the best physically. I dated a single mom for a minute who was into the P90X and ate paleo… an amazing hardbody, who was tight everywhere even after a few rounds of childbirth and breastfeeding.

I read an article last week from what seemed like an ultra liberal professor that showed intense hatred for paleo dieters. He never got outright political but his references to the agrarian wheat eaters sharing “a plentiful renewable resource” over those “who would destroy the earth” was political enough for me. I knew what side he votes on and the article convinced me to eat less “democratic grain”.

He did say that grain eating goes back several hundred thousand years and made a reference to women being the main food providers because meat couldn’t be caught every day supposedly.

Reason human groups turned to grains & vegetables: scarcity of meat.

This is a very astute observation. It’s even more observable in children. Vegetarian & vegan children tend to be shy, avoidant, withdrawn, tend towards emotional outbursts.

The paleo kids I know (raised by paleo parents, of course) tend to be more brave, athletic, outgoing, easygoing, and relaxed. Sometimes they’re little terrors because they’re so energetic, but no one can accuse them of being shrinking violets.

Yeah. I totally agree. I mean, I don’t have children, so I sure don’t feel like I should be telling people how to raise theirs, but I totally understand what you are saying. I think it is wrong to make your children be vegetarians, simply because it should be their choice. I just watched “About a Boy,” with Hugh Grant, in which he befriends the son of this hippie lady. The hippie lady is imposing her vegetarianism on her son, telling him that she will be “VERY disappointed” if he goes to McDonalds. Of course, this lady is also mentally unstable, and tries to commit suicide, so maybe the problems have more to do with the parent then the vegetarianism.

Personally, I think that if you are going to be a vegetarian, you can choose to not cook meat for your children, but that you should let them order meat when you go out to restaurants. Some vegetarians are repulsed by meat, and don’t want to cook it, but they should let their children eat it when they go to friend’s houses, dinner out, etc.

Strictly speaking, you are right. Political opinions are multi-dimensional. However, in most Western countries, one of the main axes constitutes what we call the left-right axis. It has less descriptive (and even less explanatory) power than most people think, but it has enough descriptive power to be useful. Loosely, the Left

Wants high government involvement, and a robust social safety net
Much business regulation, or businesses owned by the government
Less military spending (this was different back in say the 1940s)
        Are secular

And the “right” goes the other way.

BUT, especially in combination with a two-party system (which in turn
follows from single-winner constituencies), there is more to it than that.
Precisely because of the two party system,
both major parties become fairly large tents, with lots of dissension within each party.

But most people DO have a rough and pretty good idea what is meant by “the Left” and “the Right”.

Quite so, but there’s no real threat. We have the secure frame here; we are not plunged into anxiety by anxious demands for ‘definitions’ of the obvious.

The loathsome creature was merely attempting to obfuscate the social disasters wrought by ‘progressives’, their kind that is, by shifting semantically to the consequences of strict Republican economic policy, utterly blind to the fact that we are not Republicans, it seems. In short, imposing a category error to take the heat off his/her back.

Similar to the beast Nicole, truly a wundersau of internet-borne narcissism, conceit, sublimated vindictiveness, self-serving rationalization, and virtually the entire list of cognitive biases and logical fallacies, all stuffed potato-like into a flabby melanoid sack.

Greg, these animals hate us for being what we are, and have no honest means of expressing their antipathy. They are not permitted antipathy for animals unlike them for they genuinely believe we are “all the same” animal. So they mistake their proxy differences for essence, and the slightest deviation from their script makes them deeply uncomfortable.

It’s all warfare between subspecies, between members of subspecies, and of course males and females. Our way proposes cutting away at least two of these tiresome quagmires and focusing on the first. But they won’t have it, this gutmenschen-mafia. I agree but I also believe something – not sure what – is making more and more people in western civilization become fucked up people.

What I am trying to say here is that it is in part because people are so fucked up that they are attracted to leftism.

But leftism encourages fuckedupness ( not a word I know ) too

it is like some sort of vicious circle, and I have no idea how we can stop this.

“How can a whole civilization be so full of self loathing?”

It is civilization itself, ultimately. It creates conditions in which the human animal can easily degenerate in some manner. It requires all sorts of unnatural and superfluous behavior, from the evolutionary p.o.v., merely to maintain ourselves. It offers spot palliatives like parks and paleo dieting, but cannot be stopped. It is a product of us and we are a product of it.

One of your eyes-open compatriots, Lionel Tiger, wrote a great book on this called The Manufacture of Evil. I urge you to purchase a copy.

Another concept you will want to look into is non-human stereotypy, or the effects of confinement, isolation, or starvation on other species. Parrots chew off their wings from lack of companionship; giraffes wear down their tongues from lack of mothering; horses choke themselves to death by eating too quickly to leave their stables; underfed pigs take to grinding their teeth and swallowing air; and so on.

Civilization produces “stable vices” in humans, basically.

        What uh said.

However, there are a million peculiarities in western civilization creating a perfect storm of fuckedupness that can’t wholly be explained by civilization’s side-effects. Civilization makes it incredibly easy fuck up in many ways, but we’ve managed to fuck up in almost every way. It didn’t help that we revolted against all the traditions that served to protect us against both civilization’s and nature’s dark side.

Not an enzyme, but there is myelin, a glial cell. These cells form a “sheath” around the axons of your neurons. You will know axons as the nerve endings which conduct electrical impulses across synapses to other cells (including some muscle groups).

Well, guess what myelin is made of? Mostly water, but the dry mass is 75% lipids, 25% proteins. It’s also white, which is why you have “white matter”.

Here’s my theory: vegetarianism, or dearth even of substantial plant proteins (unrefined chocolate, yams, beans, etc.), could be one of the causes of demyelination — degradation and disappearance of the myelin sheath around the axon, causing neurons to die.

In short: vegetarianism may be a neurological disease. Cells need fat. It’s all that stands between them and a biosphere to which the cell is not adapted. Without lipids, no cells — no cells, no organisms, no life.

Check out The Vegetarian Myth. It’s by some formerly rabid feminist who spent much of her life berating people for eating meat, then one day was overcome by her fatigue and depression, and broke down for a stray can of tuna in her cupboard. Now she’s a happy feminist, at least.

But she turns much of her vitriol on pastatarians in the book. Fun read.

Humans are not adapted to vegetarianism, and as Heartiste notes, these SWPL fags aren’t even eating “mostly vegetables” (Pollan), but pasta, cookies, cupcakes, smoothies, gelato, and so on. A stroll through Whole Foods is pretty horrific for me.

Anyway, this is why they’re all limp, fey, and unmotivated. I think what happens, for example with fat girls, is that their low self-esteem becomes pathological, so they’ve invested too much psychologically, assisted by the female echo chamber now dominant in society, to admit or even understand the pathology and work through it by changing diet. They’re too cozy with their mental illness, in short.

There is big difference between vegetarians and people which just do not eat meat, but discussing it is pointless because most people react too emotionally discussing such subjects. The rest of them just does not care and are busy doing more interesting things.

There’s also a bit of an “Emperor’s New Clothes” phenomenon going on with female vegetarians. Since being a special snowflake gives them a holier-than-thou attitude, they just assume that their healthier lifestyle is benefiting them in every way possible, including how they look. I know a girl who increased in size since becoming vegetarian, but it’s alright since she’s “saving the Earth” or whatever.

There’s a right way to go vegetarian or vegan, but unfortunately most people don’t do the research necessary to get the right nutrition. Most just cut out meat/animal products and replace them with processed veggie substitutes which really do nothing to aid them health-wise.

I used to date a girl who became vegan towards the end of the relationship. Any time she found out I was eating something with animal products in it she’d go on a rant about what exactly I ate, how it was made, etc. Even if it was something as innocuous as a glass of milk, she’d tell me all about factory farms, how the dairy industry is “rape”, etc. If I ate any of this stuff around here, I’d be guaranteed the most unsatisfying meal ever, followed by post-meal shaming.

She expected me to go vegan since she had, but I refused to, and that caused tension. This was a girl who had Burger King with me one day, then was a militant vegan/animal rights activist the next. It was literally overnight. I was pissed at the time, but now I’m thanking my lucky stars that I don’t have to deal with her special snowflake shit anymore.

Well, there are several cardinal sins for default leftists:

        – Eating meat
        – Preferring white people
        – Not worshiping fags
        – Not loving their pets
        – Slapping women (they wave this in bed, usually)

It’s actually everything they want most, turned inverse. They desperately want meat, they all prefer to live around other whites, they have no real need for fags and the “bisexuals” mostly go back to dick before long, their pets are surrogates, and of course they love to be slapped.

And it makes sense, since most lefties are incredibly self-loathing. Why give yourself the world when you don’t have any faith in yourself? Instead why not donate to starving kids in Africa, or volunteer for GLAAD? I’ve never seen a group of people so hell-bent on limiting their own rights/privileges while at the same time trying to champion for the rights/privileges of others.

And because of this I feel that responsible white males are becoming the new oppressed minority. Yes, white people did horrible shit to other people in the past, but now that we’re in a feel-good “everyone’s equal” kind of world, whitey is repenting for the sins of his ancestors. I’ve never advocated for colored drinking fountains, or for women to be baby- and sandwich-making machines, or for Jews to be eradicated, but now I have to pay for it through welfare systems and affirmative action and all this feminist and pro-NAACP Jackson indoctrination the public school system and liberal colleges are cramming down our throats.

Here is a proud, healthy vegetarian womyn that stood up to a bullying doctor who made assumptions similar to the ones you’ve made in this post:

“I am seeing a new doctor, who immediately tells me that I should be eating a healthier diet and getting more exercise, and that I need to watch my sugar intake because I am “probably prediabetic.” I tell the doctor, “I’m vegetarian, and I swim at least two miles four days a week, and my fasting blood sugar results have always been excellent.” The doctor looks me up and down and gives me an unvarnished look of extreme skepticism.”

Apparently, doctors telling their patients the truth is also known as “weight bullying”. This is from the same website, but is written by a different fat chick:

Article subtitle: “doctors could be killing women by making check-ups into an exercise in shame.”

“…he asked what I ate, but he didn’t wait for an answer. I had to exercise more, he said, having no idea how much I was exercising.

“I’m not concerned about it,” I said tightly, “and if it comes up again I’m going to have to find another doctor.”

“Any other doctor would tell you the same,” he said.

“Well, I prefer a doctor who at least waits to hear what I eat before telling me to eat less.”

He looked exasperated. “There’s no possible way you’re not eating too much.”

After that, I was sort of blinded by a fine mist of fury particles for a little while, and when it cleared I was dressed and headed out the door while flinging “Thanks, but I won’t be paying today” over my shoulder at the receptionist.”

For a recovered bulimic, it’s much better to be overweight and not purging than it is to be thin and still in the midst of eating disordered behavior. Bulimia really fucks up the metabolic system, so it’s pretty typical of recovered women to gain quite a bit of weight. If they keep eating healthy meals, exercising and working to eliminate the binges, they can get back to a “healthy” weight while actually being healthy.

And yes, I was also pretty surprised that the doctor skipped that and launched full-on into the weight loss lecture. It’s pretty standard among those who deal with recovered bulimics to skip the weight question altogether and instead focus on whether the patient is eating a balanced diet.

      from the article:

“my body’s dramatic response to starvation (and really, that’s what a diet is)…”

here’s the biggest problem with most fatties’ attempts at dieting and weight loss: they truly believe that a diet is a special subcategory of food intake that needs to be followed religiously until a predetermined outcome is achieved or neared, after which it can be abandoned in favor of their default food intake pattern. in reality, it isn’t. a diet is your food intake, period. you don’t “go on a diet,” you “have a diet.” if necessary, you “CHANGE your diet.” if we really wanted to spend government money on an education campaign about obesity, we should rebrand “diet” as the default food intake pattern rather than as a privation ritual when the default causes issues.

Can’t remember where I read it, but apparently the human body needs X amount of vitamins and nutrients (let’s say 40 if I remember correctly) to live a healthy life, and a strict, by-the-book vegetarian diet lacks some of those essential ingredients. So, the vegetarian diet if followed will eventually not end well for it’s practitioners.

Another problem with the female veggies is that once they hit 40, they go into skeletonization. Since they vaguely understand thin=attractive, they starve and lose muscle and fat, leading to their skin just hanging off their body. Think Madonna versus that hot britsh chef, same age, different bodies and diets. Lakimi or something.

My view is sorta contrary to the host’s. Walking around Whole Foods, there’s a lot of unhappy lefties, presumably vegetarian, who are too thin in a muscle tone free way, losing skin tone and hair but hopefully kept warm at night by the group smug that veggies have.

Oh, my god. That picture that SD links to. Eye bleach.

And that may be to host’s point. That and chicks who “run marathons” but are still chunky. Answer: “You’re Doing it Wrong.” They range from kinda to really chunky.

Finally, as for paleo’s and eating vegetables. I agree as I find my lower carb lifestyle has changed my palate so that while I avoid extra carbs except really nice ones, my vegetable consumption has gone up as well.

“Libs” tend to prefer throwing insults rather than debate

“libs” tend to accuse those who do not agree with them of being too dumb to think

“libs” tend to be in denial about a lot of things – including what it is to be a “lib”

“libs” tend to try to win , not with facts and logic, but by wearing out their opponents by repeating a million times the same things and demanding more and more facts and logical arguments, but no matter what we do and often we do it, they act as if we had done and said nothing and are asking for more, we simply give up and then the “lib” in his own delusional mind sees this as a victory.

“libs” tend to follow – consciously or not – the Allinsky rules

I could have also simply said: Look in the mirror

Dunno about my broskis, but I define liberal, quite apart from the original economic definition, though not unrelated (insomuch as the free market has invited corruption), as:

White people who worship fags, foreigners, kaffirs, cripples, a mythical six-million toten juden, think ethnic suicide is just wonderful, and attack everyone who thinks otherwise as nazi, fascist, “conservative”, bigot, hater, etc.

If you look closer, behind all the rapturous ethnomasochism, you will see some thin wires sprouting from their backs and reaching up into the sky. Far above them all is a nervous, shy, but endlesslyvindictive and enormously powerful, hook-nosed bunch with tons of money whose chief occupation is maintaining this population of goodthinking white serfs by monopolizing judgement.

Myelin = lipid padding around neurons.

Lack of meat / B12 = dymyelination / cell death.

Too much meat = build up in liver.

B12 has a remarkable conservation rate in the body because it’s so important to certain vital functions; the body treats it wisely, so to speak. Because of this, a B12 deficiency may not present for a long time; but this might be the source of the breakdown many vegans experience.

“Vitamin B12 is necessary for the formation of blood cells, nerve sheaths and various proteins. It is therefore, essential for the prevention of certain forms of anaemia and neurological disturbances. It is also involved in fat and carbohydrate metabolism and is essential for growth. In humans, vitamin B12 functions primarily as a coenzyme in intermediary metabolism.”

I mean, that’s a biography of every fucking veg you’ve ever met. Anaemia and neurological disturbance. Stunted growth. The reason Mesoamericans are short: over-hunting their game and having to switch to vegetables and grains ca. 7000 BC.

The other point that WF was trying to make is that the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology are wrong. There is no evidence linking heart failure, attacks, whatever to meat or fat. This dogma has been accepted and inculcated without question for decades.

The link between LDL is murky at best. That’s why there are the vitorin commercials that basically state, sure, you may be an olympic athlete with low body fat but your cholesterol is still high. well, then at least one of your assumptions is wrong. Arterial inflammation is the true cause of plaque build up and that’s caused by carbs.

One of the things that Taubes (and the video provided above) try to shine the light on is the dogmatic assertions by your appeal to authority in the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.

A frustrating thing about dieting, the link between obestity and diet, and so on is the dogmatic bullshit that certain politicians put in the public knowledge (as chronicled by the Fathead video clip above (and if you’re a conspiracy nut, as Big Corn bought the non radical politicians too)).

Re: cholesterol, a high level of LDL has indirectly killed two members of my own family, so I’m inclined to agree with the above-mentioned authorities.

A lot of vegetarians are extremely thin, to an unhealthy degree. The thin ones are gaunt, and have unhealthy looking skin. They look like they have a nutrient deficiency disease. With the women, it looks as if they also have some sort of early onset osteoporosis, at a very early age.

PREACH IT. Since I went Paleo, I’ve been able to eat until I am full without counting calories and work out about half as long, without gaining an ounce. And no, I’m not trading lean muscle for fat, either. Everything looks and feels exactly the same, only I’m not working anywhere near as hard to maintain it.

I’ve also been able to trash my ProActiv, because my skin has completely cleared up on its own. And my biannual trips to the dentist for cleaning have turned from unpleasant accusation-fests (“You can’t possibly be flossing twice a day!” “Yes, I am! What do you want from me!”) to quick in-and-out visits. My hair and nails are growing faster, thicker, and are less brittle.

I don’t even have to be all that hardcore. If I’m at a really great restaurant and want to try the risotto, I’ll do it. It seems to work out just fine if I hold to it about 90%.

Makes a killer beer can chicken on the grill with super crispy skin 🙂

@rappacinis daughter- Im the same way. I strive to do 85-15, and one day per week I eat anything I want- I just fast the next day and get back on the plan. Same with workouts, I used to do endless cardio- NO MORE- 20 minutes with heavy weights and tabata sprints for 5 min on the bike- and lots of walking– all my marathon-triathlon friends are always complaining about all their injuries, its all I cannot do not to laugh- they think distance running and hours on a treadmill until their knees give out is the way to go.

In the next few months I am going to really try and go 100 hardcore and try cross fit. We shall see 🙂

As usual, the devil is in the details. A vegetarian can eat in many different ways, not to mention different amounts. Thus, the vast divergence of observations above. I respect anybody who is a vegetarian for moral reasons (liberal or not), but the general theory that it is “healthy” to be vegetarian is false or at least meaningless – eating potato chips is not the same as eating blueberries. Reality is that it is EXPENSIVE to uphold a diet that is low carb, vegetarian or not. Carbs are cheap. Swedish has a word “brödsvullen”, an old term (literally bread-swollen) meaning somebody on a severely carb-loaded diet, thus fat.

Note that there are several diets, such as Atkins, paleo- and LCHF (low carb high fat) that differ only in detail, they are primarily low-carb diets. In particular, they are low grain or grain free (that includes bread, pasta and beer, but only
    technically whisk(e)y).

The theory that humans have been eating grain (at least in significant amounts) for more than a few thousand years is ludicrous. Agriculture (as opposed to munching an occasional handful of grass seeds) started about 10 000 years ago, and then only in a few places (Fertile Crescent, Indus Valley, Yellow river). and spread slowly. But it allowed, for better and for worse, the human population to grow several orders of magnitude. Prior to that, humans ate opportunistically (“bush tucker” in Downunderese) berries, fruit, grubs, occasional animals large and small (and feasted after a big kill, tucking in voraciously but not very often for obvious reasons).

But I have a serious question to this learned group: How do you tell “protein deficient” people from those who are merely thin and/or anorexic in general?

I recently came across an old book written in the 90s called The Zone: A Dietary Road Map by biochemist Barry Sears.

From all of the diets advocating restricting carbs, this one is my favorite because it doesn’t speak about totally eliminating carbs, but about eating complex carbs, and no more than 40% in one meal.

Each meal should consist of 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbs.

He was among the first to advocate restricting carbs and among the first to advocate consuming Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. He says it’s all about balancing your hormones when you eat since food is a drug
      http://crossfitimpulse.com/the-zone-diet-explained-edited

He recently published a new book with more recent research. A lot about our ancestor’s diets is discussed in his books. Fascinating read for anyone interested in health – such as exercising and eating healthy – as a lifestyle. Lots of scientific research included.

List of books on the bottom.

A joke, but physiologically sound: humans harnessed grazers for the reason that grazers are adapted to process chlorophyll. Hence the four stomachs. It is a fermentation process which isn’t replicated by the single human stomach.

Uh, oh, almost. The issue is not chlorophyll. There are two issues,
i.e. there are two things the ruminant system of stomachs (with the aid of microbes) achieve that humans cannot do. Mainly

        1) Digesting non-negligible amounts of cellulose. This is the main dry component of anything but the tenderest grass.

        2) Synthesizing proteins out of base elements.

And that’s the main reason people have kept cows, goats, sheep
(all bovidae) and occasionally critters from the cervidae sister family (deer etc, including moose, check for antlers, not horns) – the two families are the bulk of the ungulate order.

This may be older than agriculture but MUCH more recent than the hunter/gatherer stage. (Genesis starts out with the agriculture vs. herder conflict, remember – the farmer slays the herder).

Especially the vegans…they all seem to have health problems. Eating at McDonalds once a week is still probably healthier for you than a vegan diet that is 80% carbs, which is what most vegan diets seem to consist of.

I hope the doctor who advised him to go vegan actually knows that carbs are the true source of arterial inflammation. As Taubes said, there is zero evidence connecting heart attacks and meat (i.e., fat and protein).

What bubba is experiencing is the first year or so of extensive weight loss, fat and muscle, from a radical change to starvation zone famine type dieting that true veganism (without enough fats) causes. There is only so much fat and muscle to be burned off in famine mode, eh? then the body goes on to eat things like your brain and heart.

To put this delicately, hopefully bubba learns from MCA and Steve Jobs and MCDuncan.

I don’t think it’s the food, really. I think the body reflects the person’s true nature, and vegetarians are simply vile.

Seriously. Their diet isn’t about health, it’s about power. Being a vegetarian lets them tell other people what to eat. “I can’t eat meat! It’s got to be vegetarian!”

It also gives them a sense of (completely unearned) virtue and superiority over others.

Being vegetarian is a way to attack and belittle other people.

Meaningless. It depends on your definition of “nutritious” .
Pure fat (lard, tallow, cocosbutter) has the highest calorie count at about 8000 kcal per kg. Ir you have a more subtle (an sensible) definition of “nutritious”,
then you need to state how you define it before you can call some food “most nutritious”. But it is doubtful whether a sensible definition would put a premium on any ONE food.

Thor hit on something, the nutritious delusion. There was the gayfagqueer study that showed that eating nutritious cost like $40 a day or something because it would take about $40 of celery to get your avg daily caloric requirement or something else equally stupid (to show that poor people have it bad or something similar like the suburbs are uncool or capitalism sux). Kale is a great veggie, juicers love it, it’s apparently good for skin too. Like most veggies, prolly not enough calories to live off of, but if you try the juice weightloss diet, then bully for you.

Just don’t cut your kale juice with sunnydelight or full sugar apple juice.

I’m one of those “extremely rare” conservative vegans. Why am I vegan? Because every nutrient that the human body needs can be obtained most cost-effectively from plant or synthetic sources.

Protein? Try split peas, lentils, beans, sunflower seeds, peanuts, soybeans, etc… You get far more protein per dollar than meat and dairy. You also get B vitamins and fiber, as well as iron, calcium and other minerals.

Carbs and fat? Piece of cake, pardon the pun. Plenty of breads, pastas, and junk foods are vegan. And no, you don’t need eggs for a cake to be fluffy. That’s what baking soda and lemon juice is for.

Vitamin B12? Take a supplement. Just nibble the tablet. Each tablet has 1000mcg, while a 16oz steak has only 10mcg. What’s a better deal?
Heck I even nibble on vitamin C because it’s easier than eating vegetables.

    Vitamin A? Carrots.
Vitamin D? Get some sunshine, or pop the occasional supplement.
Vitamin E? Peanuts or sunflower seeds.
Vitamin K? Anything that has canola or soybean oil in it.

I stay vegan just to remind people that you can survive and thrive without animal products. All the philosophical arguments about what is “natural” are irrelevant.

I’m a healthy, manly man. I exercise regularly and I’m lean and full of energy. I’m not fat, thin, pale, weak, anemic, or protein-deficient. When I tell people I’m vegan, I often hear them say “you don’t look vegan”. After reading people’s comments here, I can understand why that’s such a common response.

Unfortunately, it’s never simple, although us libtards wish it were.

7th Day Adventists (veggies) live 6 years longer, possibly due the non-smoking, so it might be that smoking hurts you more than vegetarianism does, if it does at all.

Adventists eat lots of nuts, avoid cholesterol, and have strong social networks. That probably accounts for most of it.

That just doesn’t agree with the facts. First of all, no one is arguing vegetarians are “slimmer,” but healthier yes. And while it’s true that some people fail to replace meat with nutritionally proper alternatives, meat in itself is terrible for you. Meat eaters are 40% more likely to get cancer, live less, and are far more likely to get heart disease – the #1 killer in America. Do your own research, there are many studies (not anecdotes) that support this. I’m surprised to see this level of misinformation here, considering how brutally honest you are on all aspects of game and courtship. Think of it in the same way – just like many betas will be uncomfortable with game and dismiss it for that “reason,” many meat eaters discount vegetarianism because it makes them insecure to think that their diet is bad for them. What you eat is your own choice, and if you don’t give a damn and down a steak every day regardless of the massive cholesterol buildup in your arteries – more power to you. But don’t knock down the vegetarian diet without doing your homework first.

I was a “vegetarian” of sorts for many years, my diet consisted of 5 different vegetable servings per day, 2 to 3 pieces of fruit, protein powder, moderate carbs in the form of beans mostly, and as much fish as I could handle.

I imagined to myself that were I an hunter-gatherer living on the seashore, that such a diet is what I would have existed on. Sans the protein powder, of course.

And indeed I was extremely fit, lean, and built. I have never been fitter in my life than I was in those days.

I think occasional red meat would have made me even heathier, in hindsight, though was obsessed with saturated fats and how bad they were at that time.

Goes without saying I eat as much steak as I can now though, though nothing beats fish. Catching it, cooking it, eating it, it scratches every cro-magnon itch I have.

The virtues of unsaturated fat is one of the many half-truths circulating. The body needs both saturated and unsaturated fats, and I suspect there is “best mix”. HOWEVER, it is a terrible idea to COOK in unsaturated fats. Those double bonds will react when heated, do cross-links and all sorts or other horrible things. Unsaturated = reacive.

There is an experiment I once did in front of a high-school class (as a substitute teacher). I heated a little butter in a test tube, until it melted, then poured in some elemetal bromine (NOT bromide, I mean the brown fuming stinky stuff ) . This is quite reactive (think tamed down chlorine, the halogen in the same column in the periodic table, one row above). However, on meeting with the butter, nothing visible happened.

Then I tried the same with some (unsaturated) salad oil, I did not need to heat it as it was already liquid, i.e. at room temperature, no more than 18°C (cold country, in the winter). On adding the bromine, the stuff shot out of the test tube like rocket fuel, minus the flames.

Now, I am aware that most people don’t add bromine to their food, wisely enough. However, heating it to frying temperature will also make it react, this time mostly with itself which is not visible. But you should not eat the stuff.

Note that much oil is “Virgin Olive Oil”. Virgin??? Yup, it means it has been extracted from the olives without applying heat. Great idea, but one rendered useless if you heat the oil later.

Actually, it often DOES cost more to keep stuff out.

No antibiotics -> You need to keep the animals in conditions sanitary enough that they stay healthy without antibiotics.

No preservative -> Shorter shelf life

Sugar and salt are preservatives, among other properties.

Soy and white flour are cheap, so you can get a bigger portion at a lower price by adding them

Hydrogenated fats means you (usually partially) saturate them,
this will turn polyunsats to monounsats or unsats, (You can tell,
the more saturated the higher the melting point). Thus you can turn
cheap vegetable oils into something that looks meatier.
Avoid this stuff to. Mainly, all natural unsats are cis-form unsats,
but the hydrogenation will turn them into trans-form (google, too hard to explain without pictures). And the remaining trans-form unsaturated bonds are quite unhealthful. (It is also BTW another excellent reason NOT to heat unsaturated fats, as I discussed above; the double bonds can either to “trans” – bad – or crosslink to other double bonds – worse).

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Weston A. Price. He was a vegetarian dentist that decided he would travel the world, study indigenous people’s traditional diets, and finally prove once and for all that vegetarianism is the healthiest way to eat. He ended up showing the exact opposite. The healthiest peoples ate lots of organ meats, especially liver, and quite often raw. They consumed lots of milk and butter, but not fresh milk. They ate fermented milk products like clabber, yogurt, cheese, and butter made from cultured cream.

Fermentation in and of itself was one of the things healthy peoples had in common. Healthy grain eating cultures soaked and/or fermented the grain before eating it: e.g. sourdough bread made from sprouted grain (malt). They also ate a significant portion of their vegetables traditionally pickled through bacterial fermentation. The healthiest of the healthiest even ate small amounts of fermented meat from time to time.

He was also one of the first to show that animal fat is extremely healthy. He was also one of the first to show that your food’s food is important. Cows should be eating live growing grass, not corn. In his opinion the healthiest food for humans was butter made from cultured cream from cow’s that were eating nothing but quickly growing spring grasses.

People that eat like this are basically eating paleo, but they can still enjoy milk products and the occasional unpasteurized beer or sandwich without ‘cheating’

Traveling around the world, and fermented milk. Yes, because globally, most adults are lactose-intolerant and fermentation breaks down the lactose. Making butter or cheese leaves most of the lactose in the buttermilk or whey. But most of us who are of Northern European ancestry cam handle unfermented milk. So can the Masai, for obvious reasons (a different gene but it does the same job).

IIRC about 90% of Europeans, 50% of africans, and 10% of Asians are lactose tolerant. The Masai were one of the extremely healthy peoples, as were several similar african tribes.

His book is called “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.” Its quite a read, but very worth it. Much of his research has only recently been validated. He was very much ahead of his time.
