It’s uncomfortable to ponder such things as catastrophies and societal resets, and you’re correct that pompousity can bleed into pronouncements of impending change. People who make such predictions may very well relish the chaos and confusion among the ‘unbelievers’ that will ensue. However, as people who put a lot of effort into attempting to read the signs, they may also be attempting to give due warning to people who’d otherwise be unaware. You’re correct in that it’s very difficult to get renowned ‘experts’ to chime in on this or affirm it, but the reality is that nobody knows for sure what’s happening. There are so many prophecies regarding the ‘end of days’ from so many figures in history, that it has become an “inconvenient truth” that some don’t want to overlook. Even the renowned experts of the scientific world are predicting calamitous events ahead in the form of climatic changes, etc, etc. The media is full of them. Fast example: the oft-touted Greatest Generation had the balls to “make the world safe for democracy” (ha!), but somehow couldn’t make a stand when it came time to protect their own children and grandchildren from the onslaught of ebonics and pidgin Spanish.
And to be honest… it really doesn’t take as much balls as they’re given credit for, considering most of the victory was achieved through superior odds in the field and massive destruction (along with it’s handmaiden, collateral damage) from the air… all the while one’s own homeland (for all intents and purposes) safe and secure.

You are too hard on the Greatest Generation. They survived appalling poverty in the Depression. Appalling destruction in WWII. Most men ages 17-40 were in the military. For example, the loss rate in the Air Campaign over Europe was over 50% KIA. We lost over 70,000 men in that effort alone. At Okinawa, basically WWI trench warfare, we lost about 13,000 KIA. In one battle alone. When the Japanese were essentially whipped.
The Greatest Generation saw real horror. Stuff you and I cannot imagine. Like best friends cut in half by a shell and screaming as they died, or little kids burnt by flamethrowers in a cave. So they wanted to protect their kids.

Not completely true. As a bleeding edge Millennial, Gen Xers were my immediate role models. To this day I’m much more similar to gen x than my own generation, simply because they were who I worked with and played football with when I was young.

The Greatest Generation didn’t do the best job of passing their culture on. Then again, it is hard to pass along the wisdom and sterness that will be created by a childhood of poverty followed by war when you are creating the greatest boom in wealth the world has ever seen.
As poorly as the Greatest passed along their values, the Boomers multiplied its effects hundred-fold by rejecting every bit of it at Universities and rock concerts. What they did retain, they did not pass on to Gen X or the Millennials.

can see this in my own family. my grandparents underestimated the effect that an increasingly “messaged” culture had on their boomer kids when they had been taught by example in small groups with proper social control.
my generation is polarized greatly…….a real split between those that choose to be governed and those that govern. it seems to follow along the lines of racial boundaries too. or maybe its r/K selective based on resource allocation, dunno.

How old are you? My money’s on 40 +/- 3. The Baby Boomers have really pissed off a significant percentage of Generation X men. We’re the first ones to hit middle age seeing the horrible trajectory our society’s on, while personally remembering how it used to be.

Yep. I’m almost 10 years older and grew up on the country. It was different and better, but the irony is that women were happier and stronger. A common saying was that “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” I can still remember listening to my grandma pouring scorn on the feminists and how they were going to ruin everything for women. Feminism has been a disaster for men and society, but it’s also been bad for women.

The boomers passed along the values of earlier Americans precisely because they rejected those values wholesale. In doing so they abandoned their own children to raise themselves, thus creating a generation that basically developed independence in thought and action as an act of default survival.
I’m GenX, the Boomers were out partying and treating their kids like crap from day one, forward. Most of my contemporaries are to a large degree independent and rationally individualist to the point of extreme.
When daddy abandons you, you get to be raised girly. When mommy and daddy both are out snorting coke leaving you alone to discover the world, you learn to fend for yourself.
Just my take, YMMV, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a vast majority of “the tea party” types, at the beginning anyway, were late 30’s through 40’s men (GenX).

I think the Tea Party types are definitely an off-shoot of that, given the smallness of their number, I’d say they had the minority reaction though.
I’ve found that they are a mix of Gen X and Boomer-‘Nam Veterans, in the marches (the Marches on DC) and meetings I’ve been too.

Another aspect of this that almost identically mirrors the Values-Transfer aspects of these generations is the wealth transference aspect.
The Greatest skimpt and saved every damned penny they could and in doing so built a Savings-Based economy. They bought a lot once the 50s hit, but they produced way more and there was plenty for everyone.
By the Boomers, those savings started to be burned up and a debt-based economy arose. That’s currently what we have now.
As a result, Boomers are in massive amounts of debt. My parents, God bless them, started years ago paying theirs off. Most haven’t.
Boomers have been at the point for a while now where they are going into debt on the backs of future generations.
So, not only have Boomers pulled themselves up by the ladder of savings above them created by the Greatest, but once the ladder was gone, they are standing on the backs and necks of their children.
They spent not only their inheritance, but their children’s as well.

As GenX, I realized quite early in life that I could count on nothing, NOTHING, being handed to me by the Boomer generation, so having an inheritance was never a factor. I made my own wealth despite how my parents lived.

Mom and pop divorced, dad moved out of state to start a new family with a young hottie girlfriend (this, I do not begrudge him, but he did basically disappear from my life except during holidays), mom decided to whoop it up partying and abandoned me, first in a technical sense then eventually a legal sense. Basically raised myself until I was old enough to latch onto my uncle(s) and learn how to hunt and be part of a 1% motorcycle gang (at 14 that shit taught some valuable shit).
Watched a lot of my friends go through similar (well, split latch key families anyway). I used to say “I envy you folks that had stable families”, but at this point in life I cherish my independent spirit and ability to stand up and openly defy society without fear, so I take value from what was given to me by life.

–A fairly transparent plutocratic economic system where the rich are at least honest in that they’re absorbing 98% of wealth production, and offering you an electoral system where if you stopped electing Yalie elites you can get some of it back, but you don’t want to cuz you like the rich people.
–Only about one ( 9/11) enemy infiltration into the country which killed 3000-soething in the last 100 years, a tragedy psychologically but an extreme outlier in the history of all empires.

I think the catalyst of a lot of this was the commercialization of – among other things – the teenage years in the 1950s. Before that, you were a child becoming an adult. Now, it’s the most magical age of your life and you can linger in it forever.

and there are VERY FEW members of Gen X in all of Congress, house or senate. VERY few. I hate when people fail to use discipline when talking about the age range of generations. Gen X right now is age 35 to 40…our kids are aged 0 to 8. There are no adult children of Gen X right now except perhaps for 20 year olds with a 40 year old mother.
There are no INFLUENTIAL non-trash children of Gen X right now. The children of good Gen X people are aged 0 to 12 right now.

Um, not so much guy. Those born in the mid 1960’s is the starting point. I’m in GenX (46 y/o) and have seen articles referring to us as GenX since I was in my early 20’s.
Which means that, yes, there are kids old enough to be adults now, if you get somebody here in my generation who started young (~18 to 20). In fact, I have a former classmate acquaintence who is a grandfather (same age as me) now.

Offshoot of this: these days I often see “Generation Y” used as a synonym for “Millennial”, but I distinctly remember first seeing that word used for the people born around 1975-1985, who bridged Gen X and the Millennials. People born in this era had very different upbringings than the ’60s births that made up the early part of Gen X. More computers and video games, a more stultifying education system, fewer two-parent homes, and of course a whole lote more girl-power and feminism. As a member of this group, I’d like to see us take the “Gen Y” label back, because we’re not traditional Gen X-ers and we’re not Millennials, either.

Agreed, those currently in their late twenties to mid thirties are quite distinct in my estimation, and a pretty fractious bunch at best. I have a -little-, sympathy for Millenials, but not much. They are largely as described in the original article, but you also have to feel as least a bit of sympathy for a person that is growing up in a world where you will, almost certainly, be worse off than your parents.
This is a completely alien concept in the United States for at least the last 3-4 generations. I’m sure if I was facing such a bleak landscape I’d probably have some righteous and somewhat justified indignation about those older than me that managed to fuck things up so utterly.
So I give them a pass on that part at least. All the rest though, the shoe fits nicely and firmly.

I’ve tried to explain this to my parents a few times, but they have a hard time understanding it. There’s a low-level angst that underlies almost every facet of life for your average Millennial; work, school, friends, family, all of it. I don’t think we’re so much indignant as we are resigned. We know we don’t have a future, but far too many of are saying “fuck it” rather than “fix it.”

If anything, the future is better. First of all, porn exists at one’s fingertips. Second of all, the average woman can’t compete with porn so she’ll trade more sex for love from men. Let’s be honest here, more men are getting laid, and if they aren’t, they got the internet.
Third of all, entertainment is now practically free.

It would be wrong to blame our current predicament on any particular generation.
The single event that forever changed the ancient and finely balanced rules of human sexual relations, was the introduction of the contraceptive pill. i.e.… Women no longer having to face the responsibilities/consequences of their biology.
Most men, society in general – especially women themselves – have yet to come to terms with the magnitude of this one event and it’s catastrophic social ramifications.

Note that at 0:28:02 she is forced to admit that the one thing feminists like her, didn’t anticipate when making it easier for women to get divorced “was that most men tend to prefer younger women” and that “divorced women would have such difficulty in finding a new sexual partner”.

I don’t buy it. The condom has been around for centuries, and various other devices predate the pill as well. My suspicion is the big difference hinges around automation and the move from blue collar type jobs to the sorts of office jobs for which women are reasonably well suited. Women can survive on their own… as long as they don’t want children.

It may have been when the government started taking over fatherly roles through Medicaid, food stamps, and section 8. Poor women had more incentive to play the “alpha fux, beta bux” game.
Whenever the government takes over a private role, that role player goes out. When the government started enforcing worker safety, unions started dying out. When the government started paying SSI, people started having less kids.

For obvious reasons, condoms have always been a male controlled form of contraception – and if anything, tended to lessen a woman’s reproductive choices.
However, the universal introduction of the contraception pill gave women (for the first time in human history) 100% control of the reproduction process.
Of course many other factors have come along to compound matters but without the pill, women would have been unable to abandon their natural place in society – patriarchal motherhood.

Never take a women seriously until you are looking to get married. Being worried about the opinion of a woman is a severe character flaw in a man.
God, to be 18 again. Young men, you live in an enviable era. Every generation thinks the previous generation had it better. They didn’t. You youngsters don’t even remember polio. Just don’t make dumb choices and you will be fine. Be selfish, go for the money, and don’t be afraid of taking reasonable risks. Never let the simple fear of failing prevent you from doing anything, whether professionally or socially.
