Welfare programs have never been about solving poverty. Even the most wild-eyed utopian dreamer knows that’s absurd. The poor will always be with us. Poverty programs serve three functions today. One is riot insurance and prevention. The people of Maryland, for example, have a real concern about the ‘citizens” in Baltimore burning the city to the ground. Giving them money to sit home and watch Springer all day is a cheap and bloodless way to deal with that problem. Welfare is just a part of the defense grid.
The other function is to employ an army of state workers that become poll workers, organizers and fund raisers for the political parties. The fact that tax money goes to operations like Planned Parenthood, for example, who then funnel it back to the politicians is a good example of the self-dealing at work. The massive amount of campaign money that flows from government unions back to politicians is not an accident.
Finally, these programs, their university training grounds and the non-profit barnacles attached to every poverty program are excellent dumping grounds for the dimwitted children of the ruling classes. Throughout the state systems you find relatives of state reps and party hacks. In Massachusetts, for example, the state is now largely run by a few Hibernia clans. There are families in Mass that have three generations of hacks.
CH’s advice to leftoids who believe they MUST uplift the poor or they’ll lose out on all that dopamine-boosting self-congratulatory feels is
1. Deal with it.
2. Make transfer payments to the wretched refuse contingent upon temporary or permanent sterilization.

So Edward Snowden, who did us all a huge service by exposing the spy program Obama runs, thereby adding to the IRS scandal and the rest of the pile of crimes, was actually paid by Obama to do so in order to take attention away from the IRS scandal? Riiight.
Some people can only see the world in black and white. If there is one conspiracy, then everything must be a conspiracy. Again, once you’ve removed the economic infrastructure, the unemployed either have to be fed or left to die. Aside from an immediate drop to third world wage levels, welfare is the only option in these soft-hearted times.

I’m not talking biology, but sociology here. Sex doesn’t have to produce children, not in this day and age. Those kids exist because their mothers choose not to take precautions, or intentionally get pregnant, usually for selfish reasons. So yes, it’s irresponsible behavior.
What Amy is saying is that we subsidize the poor to ensure the children are taken care of. What I’m saying is that many of those kids wouldn’t exist in the first place if we didn’t subsidize their parents to have them.

There were primary elections held here in Texas last month. I participated to make sure that the RINOs have no place in the GOP.
We were asked to vote on certain measures close to the end of the ballot. One measure asked something like, “Should welfare recipients be forced to undergo random illicit drug testing as a condition of being on public benefits?”
My answer was a big, fat NO!
I *want* ghetto thugs to stay drugged up and stupid in their section 8 apartments so that I don’t get robbed while going to the local grocery store.

Not sure that state of affairs is optimal for your safety. If they have to support a drug habit on a welfare check, they have to rob you to get the money.
Also, those who do not kick the habit would be kicked off benefits, and that would be a cost saving. On the other hand they would become more effective criminals … decisions, decisions.

The way to hurt the Progressives is to take their money. Ironically, this means Conservatives and Libertarians must support more regulation:
1. 3 year college degrees, with hard caps on tuition, starves the University beast (Lower cap on the cost of STEM degrees, made up with higher tuition on humanities/social sciences degrees).
2. Ban co-ownership of a pay-tv service and a channel that airs on the service (Comcast would have to sell-off all the NBC properties like left-wing MSNBC and gay Bravo).
3. A la carte pricing for pay-tv. Every channel must be available independently of every other channel. Millions of conservatives would donk off Bravo/MSNBC/LOGO/MTV/etc.
Nos. 2 and 3 kill off thousands of MSM jobs, and causes Progressive propaganda to be greatly reduced because they’d no longer be guaranteed monthly subscriber revenue. Network owners would have to earn money by appealing to a mass audience. And most people aren’t interested in being told they’re racist if they disagree with Obama, or are homophobes for disagreeing with Dan Savage.
John McCain has an a la carte pricing bill. It’s the one good thing he wants to do.

Regarding 3, I would miss having all the sports channels on the cheapest cable contract. But if it reduces the size of the heavily gay media (sports journalism is heavily gay and always pro-gay) I can see a benefit.
Regarding 1, I see problems. STEM degrees cost much more to put on than humanities degrees. The professors have alternate opportunities in the marketplace. Women’s studies professors don’t. How would you implement the required revenue sharing from women’s studies where the students pay high tuition, over to the engineering department with high costs and miserly students?
We could go to more explicit government subsidy of STEM programs and students. This probably requires a wartime-economy spirit.
Something equivalent but more insidious may be taking place. Common Core is really fucking up the humanities subjects, making them pure outposts of political correctness. From what I’ve seen so far, the same is not happening in math. This is probably because they movers and shakers realize we need at least a few technically proficient folks.
So you can avoid the PC slavery by sticking to math and the harder sciences. Be more useful behind a desk than as cannon fodder in time of war, and you’ll be seen as somewhat valuable.

I think he may have been using the term “ditch digger” more metaphorically than literally. His point is solid in that a society needs people to wrap fish, sweep floors, stock shelves, clean up vomit etc, and those jobs don’t pay very much because anyone can do them and the employees in those positions are easily replaceable with negligible loss of productivity for training new hires.
Regardless of the continuing forward progress of technology there will always be jobs that need to be handled that the most educated, talented, and skilled just don’t have time to do because their skills will always be in demand and put to better uses with better financial incentives elsewhere. What is left is the majority of a society whose work is not of much value in the labor market, whether because they are just not very smart, have no particular skills or have chosen one the acclaimed (on this blog anyway) alpha male/poolside lifestyles and said FTW. They are the people who get to do those less prestigious, but still very important jobs.
Criminal class behaviors notwithstanding, poverty in and of itself is not a societal problem. Thinking we can ever “end” poverty, most of all by subsidizing it is delusional.

Dated a social worker for large hospital chain in VA in the mid-90’s. Her job was to find tweeker black chicks who had abandoned their preemies in the hospital incubator immediately after calving. When the kid was big enough to go home this pretty white girl went to the ghetto to find & convince the mom to sober up to sit through a “how to care for your special needs child” mini seminar and then take the kid home… a kid she hasn’t seen in 5 months. A lot of the nurses in the delivery rooms took to denying meds to ghetto queens in labor until they signed consent to have their tubes tied directly following the birth. They risked their nursing licenses to do it but were so dismayed at seeing 1# babies over and over they did it anyway.

Power and therefore wealth will probably always have a pareto distribution. You can’t just lop off the poor without someone else taking their place – this is utopian thinking no matter how ruthless your basic assumptions.
The OP articulates some great points, but the sterilization argument is faulty. It would be interesting to look into examples of civilizations without stable underclasses, which is what current policies put in place. I don’t disagree that the cost has become too high and the pathologies too many, but off the top of my head I can’t think of one historical example of a society that became civilized without a stable underclass.

It’s not riot insurance and prevention – it’s a rent-a-mob for when the bureaucracy wants one. Notice all the barely restrained glee over the prospect of riots due to the Zimmerman acquittal – riots that never materialized.
This is why the bureaucracy is hell bent on importing a new helot class – the current one (out of laziness or stupidity or some other reason) can’t be relied upon to do what the masters of thought need done and can’t even be bothered to burn some things on command so the agenda can be advanced!

There may be a bigger reason for them not rioting. Or not, maybe I’m just a bit more in touch with people out and about, but I cannot help but recall that right as the verdict came out a whole mess of white guys, usually veterans or active duty, were whispering amongst themselves, and to me even “Yeah, let’s get this on, bring it”.
Thought it was a local thing, but my father who lives several states away mentioned the same thing to me, asking if men around my area were acting the same as in his. It was not an unspoken topic and he’s way far away from where I live, state wise.
They riot too far and guess what, the “old white guys” that they love to sneer at…win. No contest. We win, we bulldoze their slums and erect nice shopping malls that bear the names of some of their more prominent food stamp recipients. Somebody had to have heard the undercurrent, usually rent a mobs appear on demand.
