I’m a native speaker living in Germany, and I have never heard of this “German term for repressed homosexuals”. I don’t know where this is coming from.
There’s a cliche that people commonly drink tomato juice on flights, and since he worked as a flight attendant/stewart, I guess this is where the nick name came from. If this “tomato” stuff is gay-scene lingo, I wouldn’t know it, but then why would Lubitz’s straight colleagues?

He was probably suffering from a number of things that a lot of other people suffer from without crashing planes or going on shooting sprees.
