Well, I do find the situation amusing because all the people that hate me and my kind will get royally burned eventually, even if nothing will change. I’m not very concerned though because historically this decline stuff happened before. The only people who are probably bitter are those who think change happens through voting and ‘omg, we will be minorities’. Who gives a shit? Power is power and voting is just dangling a carrot in front of the masses, but never letting them bite it. Eventually, the current elites will be replaced and what stands now won’t stand tomorrow.
I’m also not hell bent on having children so I’m not invested in the future. I do agree though that some commenters here who make everything political and rarely talk about game have little to add, but it’s not my blog. It’s the path of all blogs, really: the people with personality issues drown out what the others say simply by the volume of their posts. There’s also the thing that wordpress being broken doesn’t encourage any serious input on our part. I wrote a longish comment the other day and it disappeared and it was my last attempt to write something of substance.

Despite the classic description, Rome never really declined or fell. It gradually changed till it was unrecognizable. Charlemagne, etc., is a testament to the reverence they had for Rome and the degree to which they identified themselves with it. Well, the army needed to hold down rebellions became increasingly costly. To feed the soldiers they were moved from city to city, province to province, and they were likened to a swarm of locusts when they showed up. To have to host them was like being defeated in war, people were impoverished.
The coins were debased more and more, until they were debased to ridiculous proportions. Destroy the currency and you destroy trade. This was done to pay the soldiers’ wages by the way. In the end, the provinces welcomed the Germanic tribes like liberators. Finally they didn’t have to pay taxes to Rome anymore. (Let’s note, at the same time, that two thirds of the Roman army by that time were Germanic auxiliaries. And occasionally they would revolt and take land.) The vast cities disappeared, because they were costly, too costly for that time period. More farmers were needed, less townsfolk.
It’s a shame that they didn’t invent the steam engine. Rome’s economy would have vastly improved and they could have survived. That would of course have been preferable, because Rome did produce a lot of useful inventions, and kept peace within its borders for an amazing period of time. “What has Rome ever done for us?”, you remember from Monty Python. All the answers given to that question, and more. Alas.

Agricultural output improved in the Middle Ages with the invention of the heavy plow. The Mediterranean cultures used a scratch plow, which couldn’t till the heavier northern European soil as well as the heavy plow. Then there was the Medieval warming period, which allowed for longer growing seasons and in many cases two crops a year.
