Our focus, as ever (“eternal vigilance”), is on making good the threat of revolution. Part of that preparation involves political compromise to keep our powder dry for the fights that matter. Voting for Paul over Cruz won’t make or break us. We have reached the stage of degeneracy of the republic where the “narcissism of small differences” rule the political slapstick of the day.

This is a confusion in terms. Over the last fifty years, through the growing power of the left, the standard has shifted. So some people who call themselves “conservative” would have been leftwing radicals a century ago.
Conservatism means acknowledging a permanent, unchangeable, and flawed human nature that no human effort can perfect. In the post-revolutionary American (or ancient Christian) context, conservatism means the enforcement of negative liberties against the individual (“the individual shall not,” with the implication that all else is permitted) is the least worst political solution and the balanced machinery that allows maximum human flourishing.
Which leads to the problem of license. If you cannot discipline your passions and live civilly among men under law, you will either 1) be exiled, 2) be robbed of your liberties, or 3) self-destruct. Conservatism limits the power of the state (#1 and #2) in the confidence that natural justice (#3) will out.
Critics of conservatism misconstrue their own motives for the conservative’s, imagining that the right is as obsessed as they are about using the power of the state to affect their way of life. It’s not true. The law of morality, self-policing, and natural justice should suffice to restrain the individual — for that is the only path to personal liberty. Minute, top-down micro-regulations against behavior are excessive and dangerous and capricious.
Shorter version: either restrain yourselves, or tyrants will gain power to restrain you in the name of civilizing malcontents. Self-policing is the prerequisite for liberty and the bulwark against tyranny.

i often make the distinction between conservatives and “traditional conservatives” because the latter call themselves that and say they stand for “traditional” values which I don’t think are traditional at all. I think it is conservative to be aware of the good and the bad of sex, we see this all over the planet and throughout history. It is another thing to make sex a taboo, to hide from it, and to attribute sexual desire to an unclean or evil instinct that needs to be cured. I often find that “traditional conservatives” think that sex is a male issue and that wanting to have sex is unnatural or that sexual attraction to females might be predominantly physical. instead they think it is more of a platonic form of love. It sounds a lot like it accepts some of the basic tenets of feminism from years passed, like that men are oppressors and women are victims.

btw Matt, another big issue “traditional conservatives” have is that they believe that other people have been corrupted by the flesh, (they always use the term “flesh” quoting the Bible) but that they themselves have transcended this and in fact you kind of show that type of thinking where you say that game limits choice and causes one to chase after base desires. you also say that liberation is limiting desires. My point is that “traditional conservatives” seem to believe in something that looks like jansenism mixed with 1960’s ideology. i.e. “men are bad, male sexual desire is bad, men need to liberate themselves from their sexual desire, women are good, women are innocent, women are oppressed by men, women have no perverse sexual desires”. hence they say things like “men need to man up and marry”, or “men follow a juvenile desire for sex”, or “what men really want is children and romantic, platonic love, not sex”. My “political stance” is competence. I want simple people doing simple jobs well in the bureaucracy, and that includes those whom we elect to run that bureaucracy. I do not seek salvation — spiritual or earthly — through politicians. Earthly salvation from tyranny will never be generated by political functionaries: that’s what revolution is for. I do not seek leadership in them beyond the necessarily tactical, such as executing a war.
Rudolph Giuliani, based on his executive record alone, is the ne plus ultra of politicians in that light.
The overweening federal apparatus (and its imitators at lower levels) will be smashed from without, not within. Who happens to be running the public sewers and tax collectors at that moment is nigh irrelevant. Still, we need men who will make fewer problems for us in the meantime and who might, might make preparations for the revolutionary rebirth of the republic.

I can’t understand what (fiscal, moral, practical) motive the “left” would have for manufacturing mountains of scientific evidence to support the human impact on climate change. I am a man of science by profession and prefer to review the numbers myself before making conclusions.

We went at it as I started to notice red hives popping up on her fair skinned chest. I was hitting her with fact after fact which she would reply with I don’t believe it. She then said I am really glad we met and could have this discussion as it is very interesting. We started into it again when I finally gave her my device and said just give me your number and I will send you links to said evidence. She said no as that would be unsafe. I said that I would show her my business card and she said that is fine but will not give out number. So I started rapping it up and said that I gotta go while seeing that her chest was fully red now. I decided to go scorched earth and as I was about to walk off said I don’t know what god you pray to but you better hope he is the right one because our government is evil. She kind of agreed while putting her body back against the chair. Then I said Putin is probably the last honest leader out there and our only hope. At that point her head went back and eyes rolled while going in and out of consciousness. Her body was limp and truly spent. The only thing I regret is not telling her I had a girlfriend just like her but had to let her go because she was too into me.

Environmental protection is not achieved through collectivism, it is achieved through private property rights. Pollution happens because either private property is not respected or there is a commons so those with political and economic power can pollute it.
When we live in a society where property rights are respected then pollution has to be dropped to zero or near zero levels (because of practicality) or be contained within one’s own private property. Anything beyond that becomes a violation of the property of some one else.
Environmentalism has been co-opted by a political agenda that is about controlling people’s lives. The environment simply makes a good excuse. We can see that by how they treat China. China is allowed to vastly increase CO2. China doesn’t have to use even cheap 1970s pollution controls. China is a rich country and it is held to no standards. Why? My Facebook is now lit up with lots of people posting Memorial Day sentiments, each one thanking the fallen soldiers for defending our freedoms and keeping us safe. Two of my friends on FB (long-ago friends or acquaintances in real life) are AFG/IRQ combat vets. I don’t want to be an asshole and I keep things apolitical there but I’ve itched to ask “what American soldier since the war of 1812 did anything but kill foreign people who mean us no harm? fuck off with your fucking ‘freedoms’ asshole because we’ve been steadily losing our freedoms since 1954.”
I’m a US Army vet too and I’m gracious when this one distant friend emails me “thank you for your service” every Veteran’s day. In any case, I hope your girlfriend is OK and thank you for your service dude.
