No one knows for certain how the Neanderthals went extinct. There are many theories propounded — climate change, resource competition with newly arriving anatomically modern humans, megafauna population declines, etc — all of which are plausible, and some of which are supported circumstantially by recent genetic evidence.
I’ll suggest another, uncomfortably familiar, extinction mechanism for the Neanderthals: Diversity™ killed off the loveable brutes.
I don’t mean, exclusively, Diversity™ in the usual senses — warfare, rape&pillage, territorial disputes, food shortages. I mean it in the Calhoun rat “behavioral sink” sense. That is, the flood of Vibrant AMH Diversity™ arriving from points south, who may or may not have mingled peaceably with Neanderthals in the latter’s homeland, (and occasionally shared beds), by their mere proximate presence and cultural dissimilarity induced immense psychic pressures on the locals until their native fertility rate plummeted to levels…
…not unlike what we are seeing today among white Westerners living in homelands rapidly populating with millions of alien world migrants.
Diversity™, itself, is what killed the Neanderthals.
Arguing against my speculation: Contraceptives, the Japs.
Neanderthals didn’t have the hedonism aids of condoms and Pills. If they were “secularizing”, relative to their race’s historical norm, and choosing to forfeit childbearing in favor of extracting the last bit of fun from a shrinking playground, they’d have a challenge trying to do all this to the beat of the rhythm method. Not that it couldn’t be done; Neanderthalettes might have stiff-armed a lot of horny men if they felt that conditions weren’t optimal for raising a family.
The Japanese. They have a very low TFR at the moment, and last I checked there wasn’t a ton of Diversity™ in Japan. But, it is an island nation, and there are a lot of Japanese living on it, living a neon-colored and optically-wired version of the Western lifestyle. Here, the mechanism is entirely raw numbers, rather than raw numbers + clash of cultures.
The Neanderthals, it now appears from genetic analysis, have gifted White Europeans with just enough of their DNA to make something of a difference to the trajectory of white history. Did Neanderthals also gift us with a warning for our own race’s future, or lack thereof?
If so, we’ll continue to ignore it.

Funny I had a different theory, not that I studied the subject or anything, but what if the neanderthals were the equivalent of today’s colored people; they were the “demographic group” committing over 80 % of rapes and other violent crimes and the group that is almost nothing but trouble?
There was no police, no jails back then, when someone stole your goat or raped your daughter, you killed him.
Maybe at first we let them live among us ( we already had that “altruism” gene in us ) but they turned out to be way too much trouble and one day we got fed up with them and we killed them all?

I think there is a lot of modern bias that goes into the various hypothesis about their extinction. From some vague memory I have, assuming it is accurate, the neanderthals did not have the same language capabilities humans did and thus were probably not as good at forming relationships, transmitting information, etc. So, whatever allowed the human species that has out bred them to be more successful, likely also contributed to their decline. Changing climate and possibly also direct competition would be my guess.

Now check out this long book outtake blogged by Steve Sailer. In particular, note the severe injuries sustained by Neanderthals while hunting because they did not have projectile weapons. They had to get “up close and personal” while killing large beasts. The author characterizes the injuries as similar to those of rodeo bronco riders.

Your elbow room theory has been something I have been pondering myself.
If Japan can continue to resist the temptation & outside pressure to open the immigration floodgates, their decades of low birthrate should make young workers relatively valuable & better paid. As older Japanese move into smaller housing, that should make homes for families more affordable too.
Higher wages plus cheaper housing would equal easier family formation, right? And perhaps a minor baby boom to fill the void? I’m curious if there are any historical examples of demographic imbalances self-correcting over time.
It’s a moot point for White America & Europe, though. The powers that be have opted to fill any native birth gaps with 3rd world invaders.

One theory is that Neanderthals got poorer “fuel mileage”.They were built with much greater strength and endurance than Cromagnons but that build meant that they needed about twice as many calories. The natural history museum in Chicago has modern and Neanderthal skeletons side by side and the differences is bone strength and lung capacity are pretty striking. The problem was further exacerbated by the fact that their women were closer in build to the men than is the case for modern humans and therefore also needed more food. The Neanderthals relied mainly on their strength and speed to hunt, but modern humans could hunt at least as well with their more advanced weapons such as bows and atlatl levers for throwing spears, so they out simply out competed the Neanderthals. There is also some more far fetched speculation based on their skeletons that although their brains were larger than ours, possibly the verbal centers in their brains and vocal cord development gave them less sophisticated communication capabilities.

Good points. I’ve read similar observations in National Geographic. A Neanderthal needed an average of 5,000 calories a day: that’s a modern hockey player in training. That means you need a lot of meat, which means megafauna hunting, which means a lot of deaths and injuries when the megafauna objects. Modern human women were able to engage in gathering behavior (fruits, roots, berries, etc.) which led to a diversified food supply and less exposure to hunting hazards.

There is another possibilty. It may have been the case that Cro Magnon/Neanderthals hybrids replaced both groups. One can speculate endlessly about disadvantages possessed by “pure” Neanderthals but there is no question that some of their traits added to the fitness of the new mixture.
There are a lot of N. Europeans with 4% of their genome being N. sourced. That is major; especially when considering that it has been 30,000-40,000 years on. There are reasons to think that these are active genes related to brain growth and function and not junk DNA at all. Junk DNA gets diluted to nothing over time.
In other words, it looks like the hybrid replaced both groups in Europe and N. Asia. If Cro Magnon did come from Africa, why were there no Africanoids surviving in these places at any time in recorded history?

Another thing: The older the DNA found in Europe, the higher the explicit N. content. “Osti”, the thouands of years old frozen man found in the Alps, was 7% Neanderthal. A sample found recently that was, I think, 10,000plus years older was 11%.
This points in the opposite direction from an early extinction and replacement theory. It is what one would see if a hybrid creature replaced both groups but then SLOWLY lost less adapted Neanderthal genes – for who knows what reasons..

Neanderthals were likely highly intelligent. Some posit that modern day Basque populations are descended from isolated Neanderthal populations. Basques and Neanderthals are the only two groups to have been the supposed “original” inhabitants of Europe, after all.

That larger theme is of trying to fill the father’s shoes. The culture in the Pacific NW, somehow lead the way in expressing that. All those kids, whose fathers were scrappy and tough, but they don’t know.
To some extent, that was the context of the referenced comment. In his expressed opinions, Cobain was a predictable liberal; but in his singing he was a Big Man.

I’ve said this before, albeit with a different conclusion. That Japan actually won WW2. The destruction of their country was the price they paid to join the modern economy. They maintained near homogeneity, but were stripped of their military. Obviously the victory was short-lived, but victory is never permanent. And I’m sure the Japanese didn’t feel like they won at the time. And the citizens of the west felt like we won. The commie/marxist infiltration of the west is obvious to us here, but the % of the population that is ignorant of that FACT is astonishingly high. Surprised Japan has resisted ‘diversity’ for so long. More to say. Won’t. Cheers.

This is one of the reasons why I am suprised about the talk about the devastation that YT is supposedly capable of inflicting. When I look at the absolute worst western whites have done, what was really bad? They mention Japan, but despite the temporary destruction, Japan didn’t really pay that much of a price. It’s like “if that is what your most savage fury looks like…”
The same thing is also true for West Germany.
Even the Hall of Cost ended up being a huge plus for the Chosenites in the end and they enjoy more power now than they did back in the day.
Compare that to the crippling damage inflicted by Russies or Ottomans/Arabs or Mongols: eastern Europe is shit compared to the West economically, lands conquered by Muslims need no explanation and Mongols turned a fairly intellectually talented civilization into shit. (Siege of Baghdad)
By comparison, in the long term, I cannot think of an example of whites annihilating their enemies and leaving them for the worse. The Indians (feather, not dot) were a bunch of hunters and gatherers who were really thin populationwise and inflicted far more throrough destruction upon each other than whitey ever did.
In summary: it is true that whites have shown good fighting skills. But when I hear the Kipling poem about the Saxon I am starting to roll my eyes. What exactly is going to happen when the Saxon begins to hate? How many examples has he made? Germans? Irish? Boers? Two of them ended up as bustling civilizations after than got the Saxon treatment and the Irish are pretty OK too.

The main reason the Japanese surrendered when they did was not because of the A bomb. It was because they feared that they would be occupied by the Russians if the war continued for much longer. They figured that the Americans would leave before long whereas the Russians never would.
It was concern about their gene pool.

I’ve often said, here at the chateau, that this sudden interest of “Neanderthal” and placing such DNA in the white man’s corner seemed odd to me…
When I was in school, it was pretty much indisputable that Cro-Magnon were our ancestors, and Neanderthals were considered a full step back… especially in physical features and, foremost, cranial capacity.

When we were in school, we were lied to about almost everything.
Neanderthals had 20% greater brain size than moderns. Not that such a thing ever matters.
Their main problem might have been persistently low population numbers. They were not agriculturalists, at least as far as the evidence goes. Apex predators are always thin on the ground no matter how gifted they are as individuals.

I also recall clearly the representations made of N and C-M… the former looked quite a bit simian, though closer to modern man… the latter, well… it was said that if you put a suit on Cro-Mag, he’d walk down any city street today and go unremarked.
After a quick google, now I’m seeing a claim that modern man’s brains, on average, are smaller than BOTH Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon… and that these two, at various times, may have actually been contemporaries of what went on to become modern man.

Population collapse in Western Europe is nothing new. French birthrates collapsed compared to Germany and the UK in the 19th Century. Note France had been the leading populous nation in the 1600s. And even in the 1700s had strong population growth. Both the UK AND Germany experienced population crashes starting around 1900 or so, predating WWI. Yes France in the 19th Century continued to increase in population, but at minuscule rates compared to Germany or the UK. See Eugen Weber’s “Peasants into Frenchmen” for his ideas on the why.
My own view is that when women gain independence from marriage, that is they have financial and social independence, in Western and Asian countries, they go on baby strikes, finding the attributes of Western and Asian men that were positive when women needed them (for a lifetime of duty, really) to be negative when the State becomes the provider. Africans don’t act like this, their fertility just explodes under industrialization and urbanization even under periodic famine and civil wars.
Note that France was the leader in female emancipation in many respects, even after Napoleon rolled back reforms of the Revolution. An unmarried woman in France was not the object of social scorn and did not experience the deep poverty that similar women in the UK and Germany would encounter in the 19th Century.
European and Asian women are optimized for beauty, that is sexual selection acted upon women to produce beauty (and intelligence) to provide for life long pair bonding in difficult environments requiring a lifetime commitment from men. BEFORE the pill and condom came into widespread use in France in the 19th Century, social attitudes and state support allowed women to remain single and thus on baby strikes. Note the recovery of French fertility in the Wiki article, no real info on the demographic recovery being French or just imported North African Muslims and Africans.

All of this population altering reminds me of bees.
Remember the “Killer Bees” of about 25 years ago? The story was some evil African bees had gotten into a freighter from a African country and released these very violent bees in S America. The threat was these violent African bees were destroying the indigenous bees and attacking people as the bees moved North. (Last I recall they had made it up to Mexico).
The scientists came up w/ an idea to breed sterile, tame bees, release them into the wild and the hostile bees would mate and die out; leaving a more docile bee population.
(Yes there is a frightening parallel among humans; I guess Nature is giving us a preview of things to come. It seems diversity, whether forced thru conquest or “yellow fever” will affect a nation.
Positive or negative? Time will tell, look at Mexico or Brazil or Calif.)
And yes it will take generations to sift out the genes.

I have not been to Japan but I have been to places where the majority population, on any given day, was Japanese tourists.
Consider the white-tailed deer. For many many years (decades?) states would give out almost exclusively buck licenses, and a very few doe licenses. After a while, with a new and sudden pressure on the deer population, with smaller antlers suddenly going from selected against to massively selected for, the average size of deer antlers being dropping. If this hunting paradigm had continued indefinitely, male white tail deer would have evolved completely out of their antlers.
Similarly, in Japan, WWII saw the death of a vastly disproportionate amount of any males who had even a tincture of testosterone in their bloodstream. It’s not that porn destroyed the Japanese sex drive; rather, the Japanese sex drive bled out in China and the South Pacific.
That’s my theory.

I’ve lived in Japan. You are exactly right. The majority of the Japanese population have always been peasant farmers. A slim minority were raised as warriors, and were the commanders of the vast peasant army fielded by Japan in WWII.
The warriors all died. Many leaving no progeny. The breeding population after the war consisted of peasant genes only. The post-war leadership retained enough of the old warrior ethos to whip the villagers into an army of salarymen. These men worked like dogs rebuilding their destroyed country, and the women raised their sons in their fathers’ absence.
Fast-forward two generations: Urban-living has obliterated the stolid peasant village, replacing it with an imaginary online community. Globocorp has obliterated the nationalist martial leadership of the post-war power structure, replacing it with the best practices of outsourcing. Two generations of men have been raised by women and television, which owing to the purchasing power of the Japanese housewife, is also aimed at women.
Young men have adopted the values of fashion, shopping, and social media. There are very little surviving strains of anything that could be called masculine. Instead, there are thousands of companies ready to sell the Japanese the consumer products they need to be pretty. And there are no warriors to protect them from the onslaught.
Consumerism: the farmers have become the farmed.

I think there’s something to the theory that Neanderthals were small-group, K-strategists that got overwhelmed/diluted by r-selected homosapiens.
The remnants of thal DNA may explain why Europeans express both r/K-strategies while pure homosapiens (blacks) are invariably r-selected.

There is the theory that the expulsion from paradise is a metaphorical retelling of a racial memory. The relatively speedy transition from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural one due to rapid population growth. The apple in this theory is the metaphor for pairing and subsequently more sex in the formation of permanent communities. It only takes a slight adaptation to fit this to the Neanderthal-Cro-Magnum history if, of course, you consider racial memory and metaphorical verbal tradition viable, and are open to the idea of chronological re-interpreretations.

This is the effect of the economy not growing enough for the young people to afford housing(this is also a function of older people not dying anymore to make room in the economic marjetplace), welfare(particularly retirement benefits and the devaluation of family through them, plus the immense cost shouldered by young people) and individualism(the individual being the fundamental unit of our civilizationinstead of the fwmily).
