Someone passed her a German flag to embarrass her at a party day event they hold every year, in order to see if she would wave it. It is something she should show patriotism at but she wants to show her preference for Europe and to indicate she thinks overt patriotism vulgar, as should all right thinking Europeans. The nod at the end was to say no to someone who was second guessing her decision not to wave the flag. Your analysis is spot on.

This is why Merkel and the German elites have so much invested in the EU-they’re deathly afraid to be ‘German’ on any level. I tried replying to you in another post, but maybe it’s in mod. Either way, it applies to this post as well (unless mod,etc.). Western Europeans are nearly forbidden from becoming American citizens, particularly, citizens of the UK. Gun vids on jewtoob posted by Brits have comments that tell the enthusiasts that they should move to the US and become citizens so they can freely try all types of firearms w/o the restrictions of UK law. The enthusiasts have to remind the commenters that they have to overcome crazy lottery systems and a host of other hurdles that turd-worlders don’t have to bother with, apparently. In order to increase/maintain a White majority in America, I’ve now begun encouraging young, American females to meet and marry these type of Brits, or get pregnant, whatever, to give these men American citizenship. My sister and her friends included. Worthy American men aren’t concerned about the added competition of more White men in America. Anybody else have ideas to help maintain our heritage (we need a larger White population NOW, buns in ovens too, but we need people NOW!). Thoughts?

If white Europeans want to come to the U.S. the easiest way would be to learn Spanish and get a fake Mexican birth certificate and use that to get a Mexican Matricula card. They have vans that print out Matricula cards in major cities on the spot. Once a Matriculate card is obtained it can be used to open bank accounts, and to get in state tuition in certain states, plus if you pop out some kids you can get welfare, food stamps, and medicaid for your kids.

In most countries there is far less ostentation with national symbols because only in immigrant pot pourri countries is the nation somewhat like joining a club. In other countries you are just born there, and often loyalties are regional or tribal, the national state being a secular accident of history. This does not mean these people have no historical or cultural pride — it just isn’t centred on superficial symbols of the state they live in.
Many view the flag fetishism in the USA as transparent screaming to drown out the emptiness of the national identity, distasteful, fundamentalist, sentimental, inauthentic. In Canada they have imported it somewhat the past 30 years only out of an inferiority complex.
Displays of nationalism in Germany are fraught with the lessons all post Nazi Germans have assimilated about the dangers of national totemism. In many other countries people also view it as distastefully anti-democratic to pretend that (only) your party represents the nation or the people, and not simply your party’s program.
The clip means nothing except that Merkel does not want her party presenting itself with this kind of mindless gung-ho nationalism. Too much mileage here from too little. (I vehemently oppose her crazy “refugee” policies and lack of political principles).

An ex-gf of mine grew up in East Germany under communism, but absolutely hates, hates, hates the Russians and communists. He ancestors (the ones that survived) were abused by the occupiers, as were many in Germany. She is still, in general, a liberal (learned from her many years in the States with a wealthy, liberal family), but learned a lot from me – especially about the moo-slime problem facing the world. I think Frau Merkel was selected to be in an inner group of leadership, at an early age (Communist Youth Movement), sort of like Bill Clinton was chosen at an early age by the Democrats in the States. After the 2nd world war, germany was devided into 2 countries. East and western germany. Merkel is a relict from eastern germany, called DDR. She was and perhaps still is to this very day, part of the former communist party of eastern germany.

The Madisonian system was a truly genius attempt to have popular input into selecting the government without allowing the factions and civil war that regularly follow democracies. If you’re going to idolize some mythical past, idolize the early American regime.

I agree that it’s possible to overanalyze. But when I view the video, the flag was not actually handed to Angela Merkel, but to the fellow to her left. She went to the trouble of taking the flag away from him and removing it from sight. She could have done nothing and let the fellow with the flag decide what he wanted to do with it. Sometimes deep-seated attitudes express themselves in impulsive gestures.

As an American, having lived in Germany, they are quite squeamish about expressing patriotism in any way. There was quite a bit of discussion during the 2006 World Cup, when their soccer team was doing well about how appropriate it was to wave the German flag. When we talk about the “Red, White, and Blue,” there is unmistakable pride. They have mixed feelings about the “Schwartz, Rot, Gold.” Once I included these colors in a scientific graph, just because they provided good contrast, and everyone noticed. An individual German can be proud of his country and its achievements, and they are happy to talk about it to an American, who is assumed to be patriotic. However, in public, a German must express skepticism about his country and its motives in order to fit the dominant narrative. I sometimes used to use the words “Deutsches Volk”, “Lebensraum”, and “Endlösung” just to gauge their reactions.

I think there is an honest ambivalence about us in the US. They adopt a pose to treat us like overgrown children, but they absolutely pine for some of the freedoms we take for granted, especially when it comes to free speech and overt patriotism. Imagine if you had to fear repercussions for expressing good things about your own country. You can walk into your job tomorrow and say out loud to anyone willing to listen: “This is the greatest country in the world! I am so proud to be an American!” People might look at you a little strange, but no one would think you were a bad person. Not so in Germany. They have been saddled as a people with the things that happened seventy years ago. Every expression of national pride must be reigned in with a little regret for past actions.
On the other hand, they are fascinated with our mythology, especially for the idea of the Wild West. German panties get moist the second they go to a US steakhouse. Oh, they might look down on our beer, but an American steak with some country music and some peanuts gets them all hot and bothered. Sadly, I think we are trending their direction in terms of ethnomasochism, but I am happier to be here than there, having had the experience. Oh, and German women are great in bed. An American who can speak German (or not) can get almost whatever he wants.

@ Bob…not really. German flags have always been raised at soccer games. Check the youtube clip of a Germany v Colombia soccer game from 1998..it was the team’s send off for the 1998 world cup. The stadium is full of flag waving fans. Ditto the 1988 European championship held in Germany.
Growing up in Europe everything seemed perfect when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. We had a union where predominantly patriotic countries with homogeneous populations were working together. Up to 1992 even European soccer clubs had to have 7 out of 11 national players in a team. That would be deemed racist today. As the 1990s unravelled political correctness came in, we had Clinton and Blair. The Bosman ruling and all of a sudden mass immigration started happening as Europe went ultra liberal. The once proud BBC was conservative with a small ‘c’ with serious news. Now it has become a liberal magazine with celebrity gossip.

My take on the German psyche (by observation and by liberally stealing from other sources.)
Unstable border between arrogance and submissiveness. Because they know, without doubt, that they are better at many things than most others. But they lack a ruthless core of Calvinist certainty of being the Elect of God. The center of gravity of religion in Germany is Catholic and Lutheran – Calvinism did not really take hold.
England, on the other hand, has a long tradition of all religious thought being essentially Calvinist even before Juan Colvin ever lived. The British Isles are favored by Natures God with many advantages. They nearly always won their wars. They have always had the most productive agricultural land in Europe. The oceans around are perfect for defense. These facts are accepted as a kind of gospel made manifest.
Germany was always geo-politically insecure. There has never been safety in terrain. All their borders have tended to be unstable. This goes back until time out of mind. And, despite their undoubted prowess, they lose wars.
Thus, they struggle to feel Gds blessing.
The English have never taken it personally when some other “group” talks about being a chosen people. Because they are not worried about their own status in that regard.
Germans, OTOH, feel deep uncertainty.

German identity like Italian identity is recent and fragile. Until Bismarck, Germany was a disunited series of corrupt (saving Prussia) princedoms and electorates (governed by Church-electors to the Holy Roman Empire) that levied ruinous taxes and conscripted men to die in futile wars mostly lost. Merkel has a country, East Germany, with the historical memory of places like Saxony, long independent. Same with Italian Venetians feeling more Venetian (Venice was an independent Republic for 700 years) than Italian.

Good points. There are mutterings of secession by Bavarians, which retained some measures of self-rule into World War I (bizarrely, Adolf Hitler, an Austrian, served in a Bavarian unit). Bavaria has its own right-of-center party (the Christian Social Union), and is predominantly Catholic, as opposed to generally Lutheran Germany. There may be some secessionist sentiments in Saxony (Leipzig and Dresden) as well. Granted, they may not amount to much, but there were central and eastern European states that lasted longer than Germany since 1871 (Carniola, Upper Lusatia, Galicia, Lodomeria) and are known only to historians.

A little off-topic, but one of the best movie scenes ever involving a flat was John Wayne as a German (yes a German) merchant marine captain in the early part of World War II (The Sea Chase). He is pro-German but anti-Nazi. In the final scene, trying to evade capture by a British warship, he hauls down the ensign of the Third Reich and hoists the old Imperial flag, which he has kept on display in his cabin. The sight of John Wayne running up a German battle ensign is great! What would Angela Merkel have done if she had been handed to old Imperial flag or the flag of Prussia? The Duke was a better German than she is!

If displaying the Imperial flag is actually against German law, then the situation is worse than I imagined. I can see banning display of Nazi-related flags, etc.; the Nazi government led Germany to catastrophic defeat, occupation and partition, while committing some horrific crimes. But banning the Imperial flag strikes me as pointless ethnomasochism–does anyone really advocate restoration of the Hohenzollerns? I wonder if displaying the flag of the Holy Roman Empire is also against German law?

Sadly, Merkel is not elected directly – since she is the Chancellor. She is the functional equivalent of the Prime Minister in the UK. The people elect the parliamentarians, and the parliamentarians in the majority then elect their PM. The German President (head of state) is elected directly, but he doesn’t really run the government. The Chancellor (equivalent of the PM) as head of government does.

Actually, unification has been the norm for the German states over the last thousand years. The Holy Roman Empire covered all modern German territory and more, and it lasted from 962 to 1806.

The Holy Roman Empire was not unified, except to the extent that all of the various kingdoms, duchies, etc. pledged an overall loyalty to the Emperor, and the “electors” participated in the Emperor’s selection. Genuine decision-making occurred at levels considerably below that of the Emperor. Real German unity dates from 1871, under the leadership of Prussia. It wasn’t as popular as might at first be supposed–Emperor Wilhelm I was actually quite content to be King of Prussia and resented Bismarck’s machinations that installed him as Emperor.

If the truth and facts of the “holocaust” were so certain, then why they cant explain missing parts of it, that are inconsistent with the “holocaust happened” version of the story, unlike it is for the “holohoax” part of it? Like for example, how was the “gas” poured if Zyklon B chemical reaction can only work under 23.7ºc and the “gas chambers” were mere 7ºC… in Summer times? And if so, why didnt the Nazis build a more efficient system for the “mass murderings” if thats what they were thinking about doing, like for example, why not using larger available industrial ovens instead of the 5x mortuary ovens for the cremation of the “mass murdereds”?… If you think that the answer to that first question is by using “heating machines” then why is there no evidence of such machines, or even blueprints… And ill tell you why, because even that would be extremely inneficient…
Such questions like those you will never get them answered by thinking that it was all planed like if the holocaust was ment to be like people tells them, or even the testimonies of those that were tried in court… because right now, the part that you call “truth” its all based on assumptions, because the so called “gas chambers” are mere ruins today, and the original blueprints from them are saying that they were mere mortuaries for Typhus and famine victims for a lower death toll under such conditions.

The question I’m asking myself is why that man let her just take it like that. And not just let her take it away, but the fact that he smiled after she took it away. Her obvious lack of respect for him, first by the irreverent manner with which she yanked the flag out of his hand and secondly, by the clearly contemptuous look she gave him afterwards.
