Not to minimize the silliness, but this isn’t as bad as it sounds.
“Combatant Command” sounds like it’s about actual ongoing combat, but that’s not how it works. Combatant commands exist to coordinate between the services in case of an attack within a certain region of the planet.
This woman’s getting appointed to Northern Command. They handle anything north of Mexico. NORTHCOM exists to keep the USSR from nuking us. I highly doubt that Russia’s going to try and pull any shit with us in the near future (at least, not in terms of an ICBM launch). She is not anywhere near the current wars.
Too, she’s an AF officer, so I’m guessing she’s either Space and Missiles or a pilot. Both are career fields open to women because they don’t require the same kind of physical strain that combat missions do. She has the exact same background as a male AF general going into that position would have had.

The president might be putting forth a female candidate for the position in an attempt to feminize the military, sure. Or he could be putting her forward because in he stupid liberal worldview, we must have 50% women everywhere. I don’t know enough about this woman as a person to say if it’s intended to punish the military. Most likely, it’s an internal DoD political thing.
But honestly, it’s not like the male GO ranks aren’t stuffed with political cowards who can do just as much damage. All I’m saying here is that this woman is being proposed for a worthless job. The press is sensationalizing this shit by talking about it in the first place.

You sound like you know what you’re talking about in your characterzation of NORTHCOM. But since the U.S. maintains no anti-ballistic missile defense system, and I don’t think much of air interceptor cabability, just what would she, or NORTHCOM, do in the event of a (very unlikely) Russian attack? Get in a bunker and wait it out?
Is this the command whose aircraft were unarmed on September 11, 2001? Ramming with an F-16 might have been a tricky business.

NORTHCOM might deal with the aftermath of a nuclear attack against the US, but it’s STRATCOM that has the assets to fire back. NORTHCOM has no control over our nukes.
Although I suppose you could consider our Alaskan based fighters (used to intercept Russian Bears) NORTHCOM’s contribution to the safety of the country in that regard.
In short, this woman won’t be involved in nuclear affairs.

I have two friends who did multiple tours in Iraq as infantry soldiers, one a non com and the other an infantry captain. Both spoke of 18-20 hour days for weeks or months on end, carrying around 80-100 pounds of gear in 110 degree heat. Maybe one woman in a 1000 could do that, but MOST men can do that. Some of the high ranking non-coms are in their late 40’s to early 50’s and do that. Virtually no woman at that age can take that kind of physical stress.

The USA defeated Japan and Italy and smashed Hitler’s Western front in barely three and a half years. Who cares how many pounds FDR could – or couldn’t – carry on his back? I doubt Churchill ever completed an obstacle course in his entire life, but he held Britain together after Dunkirk, when we stood alone against the Third Reich for 21 months.
Physical prowess is not the issue. If, on the other hand, female generals display less intelligence and are poorer military tacticians, that’s a whole different ball game.

Combat command is code for logistical-EZ work that in better days would go to some poor bastard that’s reaching the end of his career fighting these wars. Instead, the broads go straight to the EZ work. Saw it in Naval Aviation for years. Since the women are useless for the operational shit at-sea, in spite of the fact they can go aboard now, they won’t go aboard anymore. So they get parked at the EZ-work shore side billets.
