I.e., Trump’s primary turnout this year is due more to GOP voter participation returning to its pre-Obama level.
The real structural factors are the following —
1) The GOP sweep of Congressional, state and local elections in the 2010, 2012 and 2014 elections, to the point where it would be difficult for the GOP to win any more than the Presidency, plus
2) The economy and jobs have plain sucked the whole time.
Historically this structural combination has always resulted in an overwhelming turnover of the Presidency at the next open election. See Bush in 2000 and Obama in 2008 after the 2006 Democratic take over of Congress.
The Mudcat Sanders story tells me not so much that a nomination of Hillary will alienate the white working class outside the South from the Democrats (about 20% of the electorate) as that this will make the alienation indelible.
We are talking on the scale and permanence of how Gov. Pete Wilson and the California GOP alienated Hispanics in 1994, with inspired exploitation of that by Leon Panetta and Pres Clinton.
It looks like the GOP will have an electoral vote lock on the Midwest for a generation or more, with Pennsylvania and New Jersey “Turning Reddish-Purple.”

There were no reports of serious injuries at the event in Republican bastion of Orange County. But at least two police cars were vandalized and one Trump supporter had his face bloodied in a scuffle as he tried to drive out of the arena after Trump’s speech.

A recent girlfriend of mine has an 84 year old retired physician for a father. I spent a weekend with her and her parents a couple months back. Her mother is her dad’s second wife and is 23 years his junior. In the car she recounted something he had said to her almost 30 years prior; “I like you because I am tired of dealing with the pretty women”. A neg of epic proportions that shook her so much that she fell in love with him and still tells it as a part of the ‘how we met’ story. I learned a lot from him that weekend including how most of the supplements we take are either made in Israel or made by Israeli owned companies.
