I haven’t watched Taxi Driver in years. I did identify with Travis Bickle a lot — I lived in a studio apartment in the inner city in my early 20s, having moved from a small town that was completely isolated from the poz. I went from being a well meaning liberal to a Fascist overnight. It’s amazing what will happen to somebody’s worldview when he can eschew social conventions and politeness. Not saying I got into Bernie Goetz type situations, but I had a few near scuffles with dindus.
I certainly identified with his social alienation (I didn’t know anyone in my new surroundings) and I also liked his pull yourself up by your bootstraps attitude. Yeah he does fall into AFC trappings for a while after Betsy rejects him (he lacked any sense of social calibration by taking her to a porno film house) but he drives himself by turning inward training his mind, body and soul to become a one man army against the dregs of society.

I got in a little trouble for that back at the office because DC isn’t the place for that, legally-speaking. Then, the issue of carrying on a customer premises, but no one but me knew I had it. But, it’s DC, so I did, did many times after and would again.
