When Calvinism and Lutheranism were tearing France apart the Swedes and the Norwegians were busy divvying up their kingdoms, but they never slaughtered in the name of religion. Northern Euros are just generally passive and slow to anger. The real problem is that university is a cultural phenomenon and means young girls are not living under the guidance of their parents’ rooftops.
Defund the fucking universities (or at least their most useless departments) and seize their endowments (the gains were ill gotten from taxpayer subsidized student loans for the false promise of a better paying job). Use the seized assets to forgive student debt and start anew.
The federal government could easily do this given title IX. You do deals with the devil, the devil gonna come calling.

That’s a better approach. Still, educating women is superfluous if they are going to be in their traditional roles. A 4 year degree will be wasted on a woman who is having plenty of children. The sad part is that a woman with $40k or more of school loans may not have the option of staying home. Women’s education is a big trap an no one is happier for it.
Now, some sort of certification that takes a year or less may be beneficial, or something that allows a woman to operate a home business.

Of more interest have been the dinner table discussions I’ve had with her older brother (still in elementary school) about college. I’m not pushing the “you need to go to college” propaganda, and have been encouraging him to think about starting his own business or get into one of the trades.
My wife is a little hesitant about it because she’s been home raising kids for over a decade and really doesn’t have any idea how bad college or being a wage-serf for the corporate world has become; and we do pretty well with my white-collar work so she’s prejudiced.

@corvo I think a hard charging young man will succeed, college or not. If college is chosen, it should be with a specific career path in mind and a plan to minimize debt. However, I’m always discovering obscure but high paying jobs that a motivated young man could work up to. It pays to really research various industries.
While I think the trades, like welding, framing, etc can be good, they can be very subject to the whims of the economy, are hard on the body, and often deadend. I think the key word is vesatility, beigg able to wear several occupational hats.

Quite simply… If you need to take on debt to go to college, you should not go. Invest what time and capital you have in you and by the time your college friends are looking for their first post degree jobs you will have something worth something and will in most circumstances be making twice what they will be (outlier s being ivy grads at GS etc.).
For girls… Send them at most to state school and minimize costs. Push them into accounting, which can be leveraged from at home tax season down the line… Or send them to culinary school so at least they learn how to cook.

Yup. Wish I would have known then about making my college choice. I’m in debt, but have a good paying job to keep up to date with my bills.
At times I let it get me down, but I realize that it’s still in my control to leverage all my talents to get rid of my debt. I don’t have any regrets about it. Funny thing is I went back to finish my degree after a long time and in that time I was smarter than all my “degreed” colleagues, always running circles around them without breaking a sweat.
But HR was keeping me down since I didn’t have that credentialed piece of paper.

I’d add a note here for future technical types: if you think you’ll hate desk-work and like blue collar factory work, a problem you want to avoid is over-specialization, something I suffer from lol. A good thing to do with your first two years after high school (had I only known) is to get a two-year associates degree or even just a certificate (CMT) as an industrial maintenance technician. It’s relatively cheap, around 10k. You learn mechanical and electrical basics, how to oil and grease equipment, HVAC systems, hydraulics, welding, etc. Look for places that have something with robot maintenance, and that teach some PLC programming and AutoCad. CNC would be nice too. Salaries are around 40-50k. It’s not the path to riches, but machine maintenance is something that is identical in every building and factory and cannot (at this point) be outsourced – you gots to have the troubleshooter on the spot. You can always make the jump later to engineer and you’ll have a solid practical base.

Imagine the scene of the four-picture girl.

It all started with this totally harmless looking idea.

What continues to baffle me is that they could have known better.
Northern Europeans – the Germans most of all – have long been the most avid of world travelers, there isn’t a (warm) beach that isn’t packed with Dutch, Germans, Swedes, Danes and various other Blondies from about mid-May to the end of August – or, in ‘exotic’ locales even at other times of year – you can’t climb a mountain anywhere on this planet without finding 3 German tour buses already straddling the summit, and no fair trade coffee from jung1e X was ever grown without several 68er/boomer couples from Stubenbüttel an der Zwicke tasting it first.

Any time I traveled to Europe, Australia, Oman, India, Canada, South Africa, or any city in United States, I had brief conversations with Germans (usually couples) going to X to coming back from X.
On trains, on planes, on ships, on fucking dhows. In cafes, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, motels, hotels. In my experience with talking with them -the Dutch are NOT as liberal as most Americans think, the Danes are pozzed, the Germans are a mixed bag, and the Swedes, Good Lord, I can’t even begin with them. What I noticed even as a k1d in the 70s was that there really wasn’t any such thing as a modern European culture.
What passed for culture was either a warmed-up version of something from before WWI – the kind of stuff tourists come to see – or something American re-interpreted by Europeans or something simply imported from the US without modifications.
It was like they didn’t quite know what to do with themselves in a post-imperial world.
Add to that the fact that it was basically verboten for Europeans of the second half of the 20th century to like their own culture or history, no wonder they started seeing everything of theirs as bad and everything foreign as automatically good.

Looking at the pictures she’s always got the “1000 Yard” stare kind of going on.
As for the hair; it looks like she might have some problems with it thinning, might be why it’s short. Also might be an indication of being a “higher T-Girl”.
The one where she’s doing that the least is interestingly enough, the Junior year picture. But it’s also the one where she looks the most depressed and empty.
By the end of it she’s bulked up a bit, her neck seems to be thicker, face more masculine and completely broken psychologically.
College is kind of iffy; on one hand it’s a good place to find a guy whose going to get a college degree and have some options and stability in life.

I agree that sending a daughter to college is a form of Russian roulette with three loaded chambers. Does anyone have any practical advice for what to do with Section 529 college savings account? My daughter has one with over $20,000 in it and turns 18 later this year. Is there a lawful way to spend it without enrolling in a institution of “higher education?” Are MOOCs an option? Anyone else confronting this problem?

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. My family is in Europe at the moment, so that complicates things. The 529 program does recognize some European colleges but I fear the POZ there. I think that you may have a number of years to spend the money so it’s not a pressing matter. I’d rather lose the money entirely than send her to a place that turns out the type of “woman” in CH’s original post. There’s something seriously sick about a society that does that.

Nursing is an in-demand skill and usually offers flexible shifts.
Pharmac!sts also have a pretty easy gig in the U.S. (as far as I’m concerned, all they do is fill prescr!pt!ons and put pills into bottles, unlike Europe where they can actually make a diagnos!s and prescribe medic!ne themselves). I dated a girl years ago who was in school for a “Pharm-D” program or something like that, basically a 5-year undergraduate+ program that allowed her to become a pharmac!st after graduation. She is happily m@rried with children and does some evening/weekend work (not full time) at a retail pharmacy to supplement her husband’s income.

Also, as has been said, you can spend the 529 funds on education at more than just your traditional 4-year colleges. Trade schools, probably even stuff like cosmo-schools (makeup and hair, if she’s into that it could be a little part-time job after she’s m@rried) … do some research but there are definitely other options besides college for spending your 529 money.
The owner of the 529 plan can also transfer the funds from one beneficiary to another, so it’s not tied to your daughter.

This morning, I caught part of a documentary I though I’d never see.
It was called The other story of the forgotten s1aves and was easily the most even-handed treatment of the subject I have ever seen on TV.
