Yes, the religious angle is a distraction. The IRA were nominally Christians too, but their “faith” was more a demographic identifier than a real, personal life-guiding set of principles. (And their aims never particularly depended on religious justification, to my knowledge.)
Then again, if somebody killed my wife and her sister and also chopped the sister’s baby up in half all in front of my eyes, I might act out a little too. (Contrast to the German who watched his girl get refugee rap*d.) Couldn’t blame you if you didn’t want me to move in next door afterwards, though.

You’d have a point…if Africans were Christian. While African Christianity would be different from European Christianity, is a convenient self-delusion tool to think that Africa was Christianized. Serious efforts were never made. It took between 700 and 1000 years to Christianize Europe and remove most pagan ways from minds and hearts of the people of Europe so they could become Christians at heart. Africa was just colonized in the 1800 when Europe didn’t even believe its own stuff and we thought man was just another animal.
It’s disingenuous to think any “Christian” African is nothing more than a heathen cannibalistic waiting to happen under the right circumstances until proven otherwise…

OT, but I just got done watching Moana (Disney’s newest animated feature written by the same man as “Hamilton”) and have to say, it was a great movie with a phenomenal message with a shockingly small amount of poz (a girl is the chieftain-to-be: lol, women weren’t even allowed to HULA prior to Western discovery). The female baddassery is held to a minimum and she even resolves the plot in a feminine fashion through empathy rather than force.
Additionally, the song “We Know the Way” is perhaps the most profound song I’ve ever heard and clocks in at about 60 seconds of English lyrics. I can’t think of a better way to describe the ethos of the Polynesian people (not that I’m an expert or anything). These lyrics in particular stick out to me:
“At night we name every star.
We know where we are;
We know who we are, who we are.”
An explicit nod to the fact that we are the people we are due to the environment that shaped us.
In abandoning seeking out of other islands, they have gone against their nature (and implicitly Gods) and their people and land are suffering for it. If I didn’t know any better, I would think Miranda is /ourguy/ with how easily the metaphor can be switched to White people’s abandonment of what made us great. Haven’t been this pleased with a Disney movie for my daughter since Walt was involved in production.
