As for “had taught Sunday school,” I read that he had done a short stint in Vacation Bible School (and VBS is always a short stint–for obvious reasons). Being familiar with a number of VBS curricula, I’d say that could have been anything to leading the kids in arts and crafts or or helping out with the music. It’s not really comparable to teaching Sunday school–I’ve done both.

Trav is right. “truism” is something everyone knows, such as that the sun is in the sky during the day, that winter is cold, that a forest means a large number of trees and that money is something you buy things with. Something that, if you write a story where it occurs, doesn’t have to be mentioned.
For example, in a story about how George Washington fought the British, it goes without saying that it was in North America. The author doesn’t need to mention it. If someone then comes along playing Devil’s lawyer, saying “He didn’t SAY it was in North America so you can’t be sure!”, people can point out that that’s a truism. If it was NOT in North America it would have required a mention, but as long as it is the obvious choice, it doesn’t have to be mentioned. That’s a truism.
Another example: It’s a truism that Africans are dark-skinned. It is not a truism that they have an average IQ of 70 when they are not mixed. We can say it is TRUE that they have an IQ of 70, but since it is not something everyone agrees on, it’s not a truism.
Seeking to strengthen an opinion by calling it a “truism” is dishonest. And if people approve of it since it is dishonesty that serves THEIR side, then congratulations, you are on your way to cult level.

Not really. That is one of its meanings in one context, but words take their meaning from the context of use.
The word “truism” is used here – it seems to me – in the same way it is used in the work of Mises and Rothbard et al where they establish certain basic claims and then argue from there.
In Mises, for exampe, “Mises later showed that time preference is by no means an arbitrary … This follows from the truism that the larger the supply of a good is, the …”
A truism isn’t ncessarily a verifiable fact, nor is it necessarily widely accepted. It is siply the starting point or assumption for an argument, although the author is of course putting it forward as robustly “true”.

Well, I was talking about if they start doing it continuously. Up until now, these shoot-em-ups have been rare. Now we’ve gotten two in quick succession.
People put it up with it when the odds of it happening seem low, like a one-off anti-lottery that occurs once in a while. If it becomes a continuous drumbeat of Panty-fa popping up and mowing, then it’s going to change that perception and the populace will either turn decisively against guns, or those they perceive as misusing them.

The one thing about this story that gives me hope is the fact that this pathetic POS was shot and chased down by two men in town, preventing him from causing any further damage. The good guys are willing to fight back. Most of them just don’t realize that it’s necessary to do so yet.
If the Left tries to make this about gun control, the Right is going to be able to eviscerate them. The shooter had a 2014 court martial conviction. He received a dishonorable discharge for abusing his wife and child. He was not legally able to buy a gun and yet somehow, he was able to purchase one from an Academy Sports. The irony of making this about gun control ought to be apparent to anyone.

I really doubt this guy is antifa. He obviously did this partly out of hostility towards organized Christianity. But he also fits the profile of the loser outcast mass shooter.
I think the larger theme here is that when mass media reports on these tragedies, they inadvertently send a signal to all the anonymous loser nuts lying in wait that they can go out in a blaze of glory.
I don’t see all of these horrific shootings as necessarily related. I think we have a number of problems: (i) Islamic terrorism, (ii) domestic political violence, and (iii) isolated men who engage in mass shootings due to their resentment towards society and/or mental illness. I really see all of these as co-existing.

A lot easier to make a snap decision with a gun that waiting on some railroad tracks waiting for a train to come by or driving to the store, buying rope, driving back, figuring out the right knot, finding a place that will support your weight, getting a chair, then tying off the rope on the support and then deciding to jump off the chair.

Only 6% of the approx. 1300 deaths per year of “children” (age 1 to 17) are attributed to accidental firearm discharges.
A bit over 50% are homicides and 38% were suicides… hardly the “found a gun and shot myself” accident you’re trying to make it out to be.
And I’d argue strongly that 14 years and older no longer count as “children” per se, when people are trying to pull the heartstrings. Many of those are already gang members and wannabes, or victims of the violent environment in which they live (yes, negro “children” make up the disproportionate percentage of that stat too, and boys in as a whole are 82% of it, surprise, surprise).
Eliminate nonwhites from the overall gun crime and death stats, and you have a surprising small number of gun deaths in America each year, given the vast number of weapons.
So yes, get rid of shitskins and the problem pretty much goes away, give or take your occasional accident, White criminal, and “lone nut”.

and told he me that I could be depressed maybe but that even if I did have what they were saying, that would not want to let them diagnose me with it.

In Haiti blacks outnumbered whites 10 to 1 (compared to 2 to 1 in South Africa). Haiti survived over 200 years before the status quo was overthrown because of the French Revolution.

I think a really strong case can be made that every muslim is a terrorist. I think condoning the death penalty for blasphemy, adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality, etc is terrorism. I don’t think a gay man getting thrown off a building in Saudi Arabia is any less terrorized than one shit in a nightclub in Orlando.
The vast majority of muslims in the world may not blow themselves up, but they support sharia law, which is an ideology of terror. Muslims in countries where they are a minority are not as vocal about implementing sharia, but when they reach a critical mass they inevitably do and will. I am afraid of that. I think that fear is legitimate.

Fear, being cautious, prudent, and wanting to defend yourself from threats are completely normal and necessary evolutionary/survival mechanisms, and this has been well adduced here already.
Prick, I’m sure you avoid sketchy areas, you lock your doors, and take other precautions to minimize danger to yourself. You don’t let random strangers into your house and you don’t casually stroll down the streets of Nairobi and Mogadishu. So I guess you’re “living in fear”, too.

I have to say this…the governor of Texas was on Fox News saying the state of Texas denied this guy a weapon permit based on him being dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.
