In a wide-ranging interview, Brown talks about some of the highlights of her nearly 40 years at the top of the magazine world – including the decision to put the famous image of a pregnant and nude Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair – as well as her recipe for success, her marriage to Sir Harold Evans, her book The Vanity Fair Diaries and her interaction with Donald Trump when he was just gossip page fodder in New York.
“Donald Trump always came on the line with a gag, and in a funny way it did win him the hearts of the press, I think,” Brown tells Dokoupil. “I found him very beguiling actually. He had a kind of freshness and bravado that made me laugh. But then he got less and less entertaining.”
It changed, she says, because “the desire for publicity made him so impossible to deal with. One of our best writers did a piece on him, and she noted in the piece that he had Hitler’s speeches in his office. And he went absolutely ballistic.”

THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO: Personal favorite, and probably the best intro to Stillman’s work.
BARCELONA: Fun portrait of Americans in early ’80s Spain.
METROPOLITAN: First film and very cheaply made. Still, the dialogue is quite good, and Stillman makes a solid argument in favor of the virtues of traditional morality and reading Jane Austen.
DAMSELS IN DISTRESS:Some people can’t get past the arch dialogue, but I found it quite charming. Possibly Stillman’s most conservative film; Greta Gerwig’s character even delivers a Burkean speech lauding the importance of cliches and hackneyed expressions. Learning such things in youth is crucial, as they put us in contact with the accumulated wisdom of the ages:

My late grandfather always said the Bretton Woods conference in 1947 was the launch of the New World Order.
He had reams of documents in the house on that, the Jews, and related topics. Now that my grandmother’s passed on and I need to go home and sort through all the belongings, I might as well pack them with me when I pick up the china and silverware.

David Irving hasn’t read it because he believes it was tampered with. Hitler’s Second Book, on the other hand, he recommends. I will be reading it after I finish Rosenberg’s book.

Yes, you would have to get a very early copy to find it not tampered with. (((They))) always like to split Europe by saying that he regarded Slavs as subhumans and blah blah blah but for me that doesn’t fit in with the polite way he usually talked about other races and religions (as long as they are separate from us).
So the text is too untrustworthy to read it straight nowadays.
Still, it has some excellent passages on the Jews.

Table Talk is not bad..how authentic is hard to know but just reading about their conversations about empire and saint Paul etc is fascinating.

Interesting reading readers comments to your endorsement of Trump. I was the same actually. I thought he was a buffoon, but as I heard him talking I quickly realised he was the only non-buffoon limp wristed jew servant running in the Repub primary. Looking back, maybe he was dog whistling by repeatedly saying he wasn’t controlled by the “donors”. He must have meant it they way I would see it now.

I was with Trump very early. The first speech where he mentioned how mexico sends their worst and their rapists, he had me. I actually thought that was the one part of the speech that really appealed to me. The rest about the iran deal and obamacare was something Paul Ryan could say while a mossad agent pointed a sniper rifle at him.
