I may have mentioned this before but that old History Channel show Modern Marvels was excellent for the most part. And it highlighted the fact that it’s white men that keep technology going with regards to maintenance, repair, & up-keep. She hadn’t been too upset, but rules were rules, and, of course, the call was logged and flagged, and here he stood before the judge with at least fifteen other men in court today for similar infractions.
It’d actually been a rough week for Garrison. His recent tax assessment had come back with a sharper increase than expected. He’d been working out and had moved from the good-looking bracket into the handsome one, and it was going to cost him. A nice appearance was discouraged in this way, but Garrison just liked the way it felt to work out. He liked looking good in his clothes.
“All rise, her honor, Judgess Prudence presiding.” Garrison rose with the others and then was seated. All of the judges were women these days, just as all the prominent positions in just about every facet of life were now dominated by women. There were women doctors and women veterinarians, women district attorneys, women principals. And, truth be told, society just wasn’t functioning like it used to. You could never get a doctor’s appointment. Women were forever taking the day off. But that’s because they’re more evolved than us, Garrison reminded himself, thinking about all he’d been taught about women in school.
The defendants ranged in attitude from resentment to resignation. Garrison, himself, felt little to no rage. Most men were on remeron. It quelled those uprisings of feeling that something was wrong. Come to think of it, he had forgotten to take his remeron the day he had called Catrina. That had been a mistake, he thought to himself. Would it be worth mentioning in his defense? A half hour later and Garrison had had his turn in the hearing and was done. He considered his fine of $300 to be fair and believed himself lucky he hadn’t had a larger one. Of course, he’d have this on his record now. It’d be harder to get phone calls with girls than before, and it hadn’t exactly been easy then. A warm breeze pushed through the street as he descended the courthouse steps, averting his eyes when passing women. Eye contact of longer than three seconds would have him right back in the building he was leaving.
It had been a busy day. At home, he ate his dinner and prepared for bed. Opening the bottle of remeron that would ease him to sleep and round off any edginess, he shook his head again at his foolishness in missing a dose. He picked up the reading he’d started that morning. The story was nonsensical. People predicting the future always got it wrong. Equality, he dreamed. Yes, maybe one day- in some distant future- men really would receive equality.
