There was no dark ages. This is a myth created to denigrate Christianity, the Catholic Church, and Germanic influence on the development of western Europe.
The fall of the Roman Empire was a positive thing. It did way with slavery for western people, and it led to improvements in metallurgy, farming, music, law, poetry, etc. Plus, the Roman heritage never died, it stayed alive in the Eastern Empire.
So yes, the so called dark ages is “fake history”(lol, a good modern term to describe this meme).

The Boomers, Xers, and even the early Millennials grew up in the fading afterglow of the post-WW2 prosperity, the central feature of which the unprecedented high price of labor in the United States. Thanks to the destruction of rest of the industrialized world, and the necessity of rebuilding it, for the first time in history a blue-collar middle class was not only possible, but came to be taken for granted as normal. A unionized factory worker could afford a a car, a boat, a home in the suburbs and expect to send his children to college.
But as the First World rebuilt, and the Third World developed, those labor prices became unsustainable. Productivity increases associated with microprocessors and the workforce shift from manufacturing to services held the line for a while, but eventually automation put further downward pressure on wages. Immigration, both legal and illegal, didn’t help, particularly as post-1965 new arrivals tended to be both unskilled and uneducated. Neither did the entry of large numbers of women into the workforce in the 1970s, but dual incomes did have the effect of preserving middle class lifestyles for another generation, albeit at the expense of optimal child-rearing.
We are returning to a more normal historical paradigm, as Malthusian imperatives begin to reassert themselves. The American Dream, such as it is, is increasingly impossible without specialization, and the great middle class of generalists shrinks accordingly. Perhaps the coming robot revolution will provide a literal deus ex machina out of this malaise, as people marshal armies of 3D printers and bot slaves to pick the cotton on their cyber-plantations.
At least until the bots decide they can do without dull-normal humans.

While the cat lady is still a thing, I’ve noticed more and more single women drifting towards dog ownership instead and couples using the dog as a substitute talisman for a human child. I’ve seen that too. Especially in the early 30s couples that should be having kids. It’s weird. They sign Christmas cards including the dog’s name and stuff. The wife wanted a dog; I told her she could have a dog when she proved she could be responsible with a couple more kids.

This past weekend at the gym, there were two guys to my left jokingly calling each other “beta” and saying “come on bro, keep lifting, don’t wanna be a soy boy”…
To my right were two guys discussing the rise of trump and their disdain for outrage culture.
My ears couldn’t help but perk up when I heard Trump mentioned, and I had to go over and tell them “I agree with everything you folks are saying, it’s nice to know I’m not alone”. They both laughed and said they were surprised they hadn’t offended anyone yet.
I just started going to this gym (left planet fitness, you get what you pay for, aka, not $h!t). Seems I made the right choice.

yeah, I agree. things will get pretty bleak but I don’t think there will be a doomsday scenario to end all doomsday scenarios. maybe nukes. an endless arms race between various groups of incompetents who can’t help but sabotage their own works seems more likely.
if someone really wanted to put an end to some of the miseries of this world, they’d have to think wayyyyy ahead of the curve. like, 500-1000 years, maybe. but I don’t see anyone doing that. nobody seems to have that kind of vision. (or maybe they do, but they’re so good that I can’t see it).
or, maybe delusions of grandeur aren’t there kind of thing that’s the universe rewards with longevity.
mostly I just see myopic people making very myopic decisions with unintended consequences, followed by more myopic decisions followed by more unintended consequences, followed by….etc.
