I’m reminded of the story of Samson in the Philistine temple, as told in the Biblical book of Judges. Samson, who is not too bright and attracted to prostitutes, but who is incredibly strong, asks God to strenghthen him one last time so that he can pull down the Philistine temple; and asks God to “let me die with my enemies.” So a story that has many elements of farce ends on a note of tragic dignity. Perhaps one or both of the two women here realized how monstrous the situation had become and decided it would just be better to end the entire horrific experiment. Wonder if the final words were something along the lines of Samson’s: “Let me die with my enemies!”
