I’m not here to shit on martial arts. I love them. They improve all aspects of the lives of those who commit to mastering them. I also think competitive wrestlers are some of the most bad ass athletes there are (I am not one).
However, there is a difference between unplanned confrontations in the real world and organized meets and matches. A huge difference, and most of the techniques you learn in almost any martial art are moot or inneffective. If you don’t admit that, you’re just plain wrong. I think that’s the only point VD is trying to make. Nothing to get your knickers twisted about.
One more thing… it’s a big unjustifiable leap from knowing that you’re proficient in one or more martial arts to assuming that you’re the ONLY one proficient in any martial art. It’s frankly weird. Stop talking like that. It makes you seem less intelligent than you likely are.

that’s a good question GE- I’m a pretty busy guy. But never mind that, you guys fill in a lot of blanks to satisfy whatever impression of a person you have in order to avoid what they are actually saying. I take vacations. Nothing I’ve said is false.
Scan- yeah I been in fights. Not lately. Last time it almost happened was on a flight back from cancun against some ornery black guy. But I realized during the verbal part he was just goading me because he said shit my kids would say to get a rise out of someone. I opted not to pursue further and laughed…didn’t want to end up in a federal hole in the carolinas or something. The shit kinda started when we were on the ground and I was like “is the door closed yet?” Cuz if it was open, it’s mexican law…closed, it becomes US federal. He popped off at 35,000 feet so I asked him wtf and there was a little trash talk n’ shit but his posture was not very aggressive whereas I was actually more ready to go. Interestingly when we landed, he was obsequiously nice to everyone, including someone who let the overhead bin down right on his head. A couple people asked me “wtf was that guy’s problem?” on our way out of the plane. I’m not a particularly violent or aggressive guy but I’m not taking shit or disrespect off of someone like that.
The truth about real fights is that the average person out there has shit balance, shit power, shit technique, and can’t throw a punch. I don’t market BJJ as any kind of be-all/end-all to fighting. I do say it will produce a person who can at least win a 1-1 encounter and will make you substantially tougher, stronger, better-conditioned, confident, etc. The true martial way. If you want to fight you need to come to kb class too.

I will say tho, if you want to see what BJJ is about, go to one of the IBJJF’s opens near you. Just walk into the gym and look around. You’re going to see a ton of people who you won’t opt to fuck with. Fighters. Guys with cretin faces, cauli ear, busted noses, crazy looking mfers. And a lot of hot chicks too actually lol. Go figure, women like fighters.
I was at the DC Open coaching some of my students and I remarked to my son on the way out, jfc, you can physically feel the anxiety, the energy, the aggression in this room. It was palpable. I took him on the first day before dropping him off at the airport and he was like damn this shit is real.

GE- to clarify a little, I did wrestling in school, quit because I couldn’t hack the weight cuts anymore. It was just getting really rough constantly starving. It does build character tho and mental toughness but fuck that shit it was D3, who cares. Karate I did after that, still in school…got the BB relatively quickly, the typical was 4 years at that dojo, I did it in a little under 3. After that I branched out a bit into some other stuff, the sticks and the aikido. Then around 30 I went in to jiu jitsu. Anyone who does it knows it takes ten years of consistent practice to get the black belt in this art…this is not the same belt as any other art. Other practical martial arts like judo tend to be 3-4 tops and my karate school was on the longer end of the scale at 4 average. That was then; lotta places hand these belts out to kids, especially TKD. In BJJ you are not eligible for the black belt until 19, and there are minimum times in rank at each belt level. 2 for blue, 1.5 for purple, 1 for brown. All of this is on ibjjf.com in the relevant pages. FWIW, instructors like me keep the standards up (all of us). The fucking gracies started selling blue belts over the internet, but their uncle, the immortal Rickson Gracie, shut that shit down. If you fake rank in BJJ you will be made an example of…either called out and made a pariah or even dojo stormed on video. Shit’s on youtube.
I started doing it as a business a few years ago after I got the black belt. One of my purple belts is a former pro MT guy so he is my MT instructor. No point whatsoever in trying to do this professionally IMO unless you have the faixa preta.

Well, without delving too deeply into anyone’s life anymore, let’s just agree that training of any kind will be beneficial to a person’s overall well-being and confidence, and the vast majority of us aren’t going to get sucker punched in the ‘hood.
In my experience, having good endurance (we old-timers call it “wind”) and grappling experience with good balance is 90% of the battle in most encounters likely to be faced in the majority of settings for guys not in some ghetto or bario… and even then, unless you’re getting jumped by multiple guys, in which case even most skilled fighters will be hard-pressed.
Best defense is use your muscles in the service of God, amirite? 😉

One thing that didn’t get much airtime in the comments of martial arts: the difference between the social dominance situations you’re likely to find yourself in vs. life-and-death fights, which, like potential car wrecks, are highly unlikely if you take basic preventative measures, and where you have limited effect on the outcome regardless of skill.
In a dominance face off with a belligerent dude, something you are likely to do, the very basic lrvel of fitness and skill, and the confidence that comes with it, gives you a huge edge.
The prep/wrestler in Breakfast Club faced off against the larger and more aggressive Bender in an Alpha cock standoff. It took the prep one simple wrestling move to win.

They train primarily for sport/dueling type scenarios which are 1 on 1, where you are already aware that your opponent is coming for you. If you have experience in other arts, you realize pretty quickly how fast things go badly against multiple opponents, or live training against one person with a weapon if you are unarmed. For example, grab a magic marker and attack a partner and see how many marks they get on their body. Even if you know how to grapple, most people never train their bodies to receive throws/takedowns on hard surfaces due to the dangers involved.
I’m not implying that other arts are useless, nor that their training isn’t helpful in a self defense scenario. Rather most of the time spent training is on other things that work best within the rulesets they practice that might have some overlap with self-defense.
A key point in self defense is situational awareness, identifying who might attack you, and conflict de-escalation and avoidance. I don’t know of many schools that actively practice those more useful tasks, as those can prevent a scenario where you actually have to physically defend yourself. Most people are probably more interested in the “sexy” parts of marital arts than developing those skills.
Working on situational awareness and how to not make yourself look like a target are more useful than what happens when a fight actually starts.
I say this despite 25+ years of training and teaching them.

So when we spar, I just concede top position and submit him over and over again. This is what BJJ is for, to learn to fight from inferior positions that were not of your choosing. Yeah, we’re not throwing punches on the ground, sure that changes the calculus and makes size 10x more important, but BJJ is *unique* in martial arts that a smaller more skilled man can routinely defeat a bigger, stronger, faster, younger, more athletic man through technique and skill. This is what the original UFC showed btw, along with the fact that the vast majority of so-called martial arts were utter fraud.

And the hardware companies that are still there still trend more conservative than the software and media companies that now dominate the headlines. Cisco and Intel used to lean right, now they’re more balanced — which is still a lot more right than Google, Facebook, and Twitter. Applied Materials (makes semiconductor manufacturing equipment) trended more Republican in the 90s but is now more like 60% Democrat. Even some of the older software companies like Oracle and Siebel (now part of Oracle) were headed by Republicans until recently.

Rather than cull the existing media, the right would be better served by developing its own institutions and then fighting for media access to the public airwaves. Hollywood movies and TV will be harder to produce due to the complexity and costs involved but the alt-right news media has already taken root on the internet and is flourishing. I am certain this is one of the things that gets under the skin of the (((MSM))). They have lost their monopoly but are still acting as if all that needs to be done is repress the right on social media and the public airwaves. Its too late for them. They are fighting this war with the weapons of the last.
We built the MSM once and then lost it to the liberals. We are now in the process of rebuilding it online and if social media wants to block us, we will just rebuild social media as well. We are winning, they are losing and there is not a thing they can do about it.
