From what I understand, Gab will be down until the weekend. They expect to be up by Friday, or thereabouts. They have a host and they are transferring their domain. These things don’t happen overnight.
This is probably a good thing for a number of reasons. The most obvious being that the media has been unable to mine the site for material. You just know that lunatics like Patrick Little were salivating at the opportunity to get attention for their crazy rants. Now any mention of Gab leads the curious to a page explaining that the tech oligarchs shut down the site. I suspect that’s why the media crazies are strangely quiet about Gab now.
By the end of this week, the media will be fixated on the Brown Wave they are trying to wish into reality. The gaslighting will be so intense some of them may burst into flames. Even the Antifa members working at the Daily Beast and Estrogen Post will be too busy to notice Gab is back.
That said, Torba needs to think about how to police lunatics like Little, who are just attention seeking wackos. The normal self-policing tools don’t work with these guys. My suggestion is that he create a penalty box for those who come to his attention. They are on mute for everyone but those who choose to follow them. This would work for the Antifa people who go on gab trying to create trouble.
Yeah, this sort of policing violates the ideal of free speech, but he has a business to run too. No one is going to fault him for a minor hypocrisy like this.
In the Reign of the Censor, these sorts of free speech compromises are inevitable if a website dedicated to free speech wants to have a platform at all. As (temporary) compromises go, this idea by Z Man isn’t bad. The truly deranged (and tbh I have seen vanishingly few truly deranged posters on Gab, and the few I have come across I sensibly muted and stopped thinking about) are limited in their scope to harass people uninterested in reading them, yet a communications conduit is kept open so that the deranged can still interact with anyone who does want to read their genteel philosophical musings.
I say this is a temporary compromise, because once we Heritage Americans regain control of the communications gateways, there won’t be a need to try and sidestep tyrannical censors always looking to SHUT US DOWN.
Torba’s a good man. Here’s hoping he figures it out.
“Policing the wackos” is vague. That’s what twitter claims to be doing. Gab is a free speech site and legal political speech should be allowed. However, since most of the troublesome posters on Gab are probably government agents, or Big Tech actors (but I repeat myself?), Torba should probably have free reign to suspend accounts he suspects of being undercovers/honeypots. You should be able to report a post and check a box that says “I think this user is potentially an undercover agent or otherwise seditious to the Gab community”. This would give him some maneuverability for censorship that will still be palatable to the Gab community.

You shadow-banned Little, why not these other accounts. Before you know it Antifa is on the site pressuring Gab to shadowban everyone like they do on twitter. If he holds to an absolutist autistic interpretation of free speech, he can say, “We suffer with these crazies on principle. Our high principles keeps us from taking the easy way out.”

In any case, the solution is alternatives.
I do not know how much of this is already in place.
BUT as long as a domain name can be had and not removed
(I don’t think domain names are censored, anybody?)
then you need a host. Somebody friendly. Or one can
be created.
And then we are off to a reasonably attack proof medium.
A massive Denial Of Service might be problem however.
I see two levels of DOS here, one is simple swarming of the host,
the other creating loads of garbage posts (crazy or just random text).
This could be dealt with by using “membership only” and
a) Making membership creation just a tad time consuming, and
having verification of actual person built in
and
b) Deleting members that misbehave
Now, the system should allow multiple blogs, likely on the same server, again with constraints based on blocking blogs that are DOS-like.
There is some engineering here, but It should be workable.
There would be some trial and error here.

If history is any indication, deplatforming can work against the deplatformer, so long as the deplatformed maintains “frame” and dedication to their original principles. Shutting down Gab probably doubles or tripled (if not more) their visibility and recognition within the marketplace, but like a previous commentor mentions, if they compromise on their free-speech principles in the slightest it will be over for them quickly.
Otherwise, this could end up being a positive for Gab…if they play their cards right and inoculate themselves against further attempts to shut them down.

Hadn’t realized that the one benefit to gab being shut down is that it cannot be mined for selective gabs, to give the (((MSM))) any fodder to further their case.
